Which households are they for?

Households that often run full loads

You regularly build up clothes, towels or bed linen and want to avoid extra cycles without running a drum that is too lightly loaded. ADEME recommends starting with the actual volume of each wash, then comparing consumption and spin performance for the reference programme.

Households with limited installation space

In a small utility room, kitchen or bathroom, compare front-loading, top-loading and integrated models based on the dimensions, door or lid opening, housing and connections. Electrolux and Whirlpool guidance highlights how the format affects access requirements.

Replacing a worn-out appliance

If you are replacing your machine, check the durability score as well as the energy label and model specifications. The French Ministry responsible for Ecology states that this score applies to relevant washing machines sold in France since 8 April 2025.

Priorities before buying

For regular washing, choose the useful capacity first, then compare the information shown for the same reference programme and the actual installation requirements.

Priority What to check Your needs
Useful capacity Compare the rated capacity in kg with the actual volume of dry laundry you build up. Record your loads for one or two weeks, including sheets and towels. I want to handle my usual loads without waiting too long or running multiple cycles. ADEME indicates that a 7 kg drum is usually sufficient; a larger capacity should meet a recurring need for full loads.
Energy, water and duration Check the kWh per 100 cycles, litres per cycle and Eco 40-60 duration on the EU label. Compare appliances with similar capacities and formats. I often do several loads in succession: I want to compare the resources used and the duration of the reference cycle before choosing.
Spin performance and noise Check the spin efficiency class, spin noise in dB and acoustic class. Do not infer spin efficiency from the spin speed in rpm alone. The laundry needs to dry within a reasonable time, and the machine may run near living areas or in the evening. ADEME specifically recommends spin efficiency class A when fast drying is important.
Format and installation Measure the width, height, depth, connections and delivery access. Allow for the clearance needed in front of a front-loader or above a top-loader, as well as the housing dimensions for an integrated model. I need to be able to open the appliance and connect it correctly after delivery. A top-loader is narrow but needs space above it; a front-loader needs clearance in front of the door.
Durability and parts Compare the durability score out of 10 between models with the same format and intended use. Also check the model documentation and the service and parts terms. With frequent use, I want an appliance whose repairability and reliability have been taken into account. The French Ministry responsible for Ecology explains that the score combines several criteria, including reliability and parts availability.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing the largest capacity “just in case”

ADEME recommends matching capacity to your needs and points out that a 7 kg model is usually sufficient to avoid running multiple cycles with insufficiently full drums. A large capacity is mainly useful when large, full loads are genuinely frequent.

Record the loads you wash for one or two weeks, including bed linen and towels, then choose the smallest capacity that normally avoids extra cycles.

  • Comparing only the energy class letter

For a household that washes frequently, energy per 100 cycles, water per cycle, Eco 40-60 duration, spin performance and noise all affect day-to-day use. The European Commission links these values to the Eco 40-60 reference programme.

Compare the label and the exact model specification side by side, using washing machines with the same capacity and format.

  • Confusing a narrow format with easy installation

A top-loader saves width but needs clear space above it; a front-loader requires room for the door to open. An integrated appliance may also need a housing, door panel or work that is separate from standard installation.

Measure the width, height, depth, connections, opening, delivery access and, for an integrated model, the housing and compatible panel.

    A guide to the brands

    Bosch

The French Bosch range includes front-loading, integrated and under-counter washing machines, with capacity options aimed in particular at households that do a lot of laundry.

    • Bosch offers freestanding, integrated and under-counter formats, as well as water and detergent adjustment functions on selected models.
    • The brand’s advice to choose at least 8 kg for an average household or 9 kg and above for frequent washing does not replace observing your actual loads or considering ADEME’s usual 7 kg guideline.

    Electrolux

Electrolux is worth considering when space requires a narrow top-loader or when a front-loader remains an option.

    • The French range reviewed includes 6 kg and 7 kg top-loaders; the brand presents top-loading as a space-saving solution.
    • For regular large full loads, check the rated capacity: the top-loading format alone does not guarantee a high capacity.

    Whirlpool

The Whirlpool range covers top-loading, front-loading and integrated formats, which are useful when comparing different installation requirements for similar washing needs.

    • Whirlpool distinguishes the requirements associated with different formats and highlights capacity, energy efficiency and water consumption among the selection criteria.
    • Dimensions, noise, the energy label and housing requirements still need to be checked for each reference rather than inferred from the format or brand.

    Miele

The W1 front-loading range may be worth considering if you are looking for a front-loader of at least 8 kg with clearly stated spin and label data on the model specification.

    • The French WWA120 WCS specification states 8 kg and 1,400 rpm, among other details, with sections covering noise, water and the Eco 40-60 programme.
    • The statement “tested for a 20-year lifespan” is a manufacturer claim; it is not a guaranteed lifespan and does not replace comparing the durability score.

Frequently asked questions

Should a household that does a lot of laundry automatically choose 9 or 10 kg?

No. ADEME indicates that a 7 kg washing machine is sufficient most of the time; move up to 8 or 9 kg only if your observations show that full loads are regularly too large for 7 kg. Capacity guidance from some manufacturers is brand advice, not a universal rule.

Which figures on the energy label should you compare for frequent washing?

Compare the energy class, kWh per 100 cycles, litres per cycle, Eco 40-60 duration, spin efficiency class and spin noise. The European Commission links these figures to the Eco 40-60 programme: they make like-for-like comparisons easier, but do not predict the exact consumption of all your programmes.

Should you check the durability score for a new washing machine in France?

Yes, for relevant washing machines sold in France. The French Ministry responsible for Ecology states that the durability score replaced the repairability score for this category from 8 April 2025; compare the score out of 10 with models of a similar format and intended use, alongside capacity and installation requirements.

Can you install a washing machine in a bathroom?

This depends on the electrical configuration and the exact location. Promotelec states that a washing machine must be outside zones 0, 1, 2 and the concealed zone, be earthed and protected by a 30 mA residual-current device; ask a qualified professional to check the installation if in doubt.

What should you check before ordering an integrated model?

Record the exact product and housing dimensions, delivery access routes, connections and door or furniture-panel compatibility. Electrolux specifies that standard installation does not include joinery, plumbing or electrical work, nor fitting a door panel to integrated appliances.
