Who is it for?

Studio flat tenant with a narrow alcove

You are looking for a main appliance for an existing space. Measure access, overall dimensions, door clearance and connections before choosing a format; do not assume that plumbing, electrical or joinery work will be possible.

Single person or couple with regular small loads

A capacity of 5 to 7 kg is generally suitable for one person or a couple, according to UFC-Que Choisir. However, the permitted load still varies depending on the programme selected.

Household without space for a standard appliance

A compact supplementary solution may be considered when neither a standard front-loading nor top-loading machine can be installed. Check the usable capacity, spin cycle and the filling and drainage arrangements for the model you choose.

Buying priorities

Compact or shallow front-loading machine

Choose this if: you have the width required for a front-loading machine and clearance in front of the door, but limited depth.

Bear in mind: a slim model does not reduce the width, and a drum that is too small may mean running more cycles.

Top-loading machine

Choose this if: the alcove width is the main obstacle and the top can remain fully accessible.

Bear in mind: the space saving is mainly in width; the depth may remain similar to that of a front-loading model.

Supplementary mini washing machine

Consider this if: installing a standard washing machine is impossible or you wash very small loads.

Check: the capacity, spin cycle, water heating and drainage system of the exact model.

Priority What to check Your needs
Overall size and opening clearance Measure the width, depth, height, pipes and doors. Slim front-loading models cited by UFC-Que Choisir are approximately 33 to 45 cm deep, while a top-loading model is approximately 40 cm wide. I want the appliance to remain usable once installed, without blocking a walkway, piece of furniture or access to the drum.
Suitable capacity Compare the capacity with your sheets, towels and combined loads. The maximum capacity does not necessarily apply to synthetic, denim or wool programmes. My small loads should remain convenient, without choosing a drum so small that it requires extra cycles.
Connections and stability Check the water supply, drainage, socket and floor. Electrolux’s pre-installation guide specifies a maximum distance of 1.2 m from the water supply and drainage for its installation service. I want to know before delivery whether the appliance can be connected without modifying the property’s existing services.
Noise, spin cycle and consumption Compare the energy label: energy per 100 cycles, water per cycle, noise level, noise class and spin efficiency class. ADEME recommends checking these figures on a common basis. In a studio flat or near a living area, I am looking for a noise level that suits my daily routine and a spin cycle suitable for drying clothes indoors.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Measuring only the alcove

A slim front-loading machine remains approximately 60 cm wide and needs space in front of the door. A top-loading model mainly reduces the width, but its lid must be able to open.

Before ordering, draw up a plan including the width, depth, height, pipes, socket, room door and opening clearance.

  • Choosing the smallest drum simply to save space

According to UFC-Que Choisir, a drum that is too small can mean running more cycles, while an unsuitable capacity may lead to unnecessary consumption.

Base the capacity on your usual loads, sheets, towels and fabric sorting. For one person or a couple, start by looking at 5 to 7 kg models.

Plumbing, electrical or joinery work may be required and is not covered by the installation service described by Electrolux.

  • Considering every mini washing machine a complete replacement

Very small mini models may limit load sizes, spinning or the washing of bulky items. UFC-Que Choisir describes some formats of just 2 to 3 kg as supplementary solutions.

Reserve these formats for small loads or where it has been confirmed that a standard appliance cannot be installed, then compare capacity, spin cycle, water heating and drainage.

Brand guide

Candy

Worth considering when comparing slim front-loading machines and compact freestanding models.

  • According to Candy France, the Mini ProWash 700 is listed with a 5 kg capacity, 1 200 rpm and dimensions of 510 × 488 × 700 mm.
  • These specifications apply to this particular model and do not describe the brand’s entire slim range.

Electrolux

A useful reference for comparing top-loading washing machines when available width is more limited than depth.

  • The EW8T3653BA example is a 6 kg top-loading model measuring 400 mm wide and 600 mm deep, according to Electrolux France.
  • The UltraCare and UltraWash features highlighted by the brand are manufacturer claims, not the conclusions of an independent test.

Bosch

Useful for comparing a standard-sized front-loading machine and checking the detailed installation requirements in the instructions.

  • The WAN2827TFR is listed at 845 × 598 × 590 mm for 8 kg; it illustrates the overall size of a standard front-loading machine.
  • The dimensions, connections, removal of transit bolts and levelling must be checked in the instructions for the model selected.

Frequently asked questions

What measurements should I take before choosing a washing machine for a studio flat?

Measure the route to the room, the width, depth and height of the space, then allow for the room needed for pipes and opening movement. For a front-loading machine, pay particular attention to the clearance in front of the door; for a top-loading model, make sure the top can open fully.

Is a top-loading washing machine always more compact than a front-loading model?

No. A top-loading model is generally much narrower—around 40 cm wide according to UFC-Que Choisir—but its depth can still be considerable. The Electrolux EW8T3653BA example is 600 mm deep: it is suitable when width is limited and the top is clear, not automatically when depth is limited.

Can I choose a mini washing machine as my only appliance?

Only if your laundry volume and fabrics allow it. The 2 to 3 kg formats described by UFC-Que Choisir are less suitable for washing bulky items and may offer more limited spinning or hot washing; a 5 kg freestanding compact model is closer to a main appliance, subject to checking its installation requirements.

What should I check when installing a washing machine in a rented property?

Check that there is a water inlet tap, wastewater drainage, a suitable socket and a stable floor. Electrolux’s pre-installation guide states that its installers connect compliant installations without carrying out plumbing, electrical or joinery work; ask for written permission before drilling or modifying any services.

How can I compare noise and consumption without relying solely on the energy class?

Compare the energy label on the same basis: kWh per 100 cycles, litres per cycle, Eco cycle duration, noise level and class, as well as spin efficiency class. ADEME recommends considering these figures alongside capacity, so you can relate them to your usual loads and programmes.
