Who is this guide for?

In shared accommodation, the right type of washing machine depends as much on the space available and your usual laundry loads as it does on the specifications.

Renters and housemates who want to keep noise down

Compare the model’s spin noise, then check the installation requirements. Electrolux France and Bosch Electroménager France note that incorrect levelling, transport bolts left in place or an unevenly distributed load can all contribute to vibration.

People with a narrow space for their washing machine

Measure the available width and depth, and remember to allow enough room to load the machine. A top-loading washing machine may suit a narrow space, but you should still compare its spin noise with that of the front-loading models you’re considering.

Buyers thinking about how long their appliance will last

Check the durability index for the specific model and read the information you’ll need to maintain it. This rating helps you compare appliances; it doesn’t guarantee that a particular washing machine will last for a set number of years.

Which features should you compare?

Start by checking the available space and the size of your usual laundry loads. Then compare the model’s specifications and installation requirements.

Front-loading

Worth considering: if there’s room to open the door at the front and you’d like to compare different capacities.

Keep in mind: allow space in front of the appliance to open the door, as well as for its dimensions.

Top-loading

Worth considering: if the available width or access to your laundry makes this style of opening more convenient.

Keep in mind: leave enough clear space above the machine and compare the noise levels of individual models rather than assuming how noisy they’ll be based on the type of opening.

Feature What to check My needs
Noise and stability Compare the noise level during the spin cycle and the noise class on the label. Check that you can install and level the appliance on a hard, stable floor, following the instructions. I share my home or have close neighbours: the stated noise level matters, but I also need to be able to install the machine correctly.
Capacity Match the capacity in kg to the size of your laundry loads and the programmes you use. ADEME says that a 7 kg drum is enough most of the time. My usual loads are fairly small: a large capacity is only useful if I regularly wash bulky items.
Space Measure the width, depth and height, then allow room to open the machine, connect it and access your laundry. My space is narrow: I want to be able to load the machine and reach the connections without difficulty.
Spin performance and consumption Check the spin-drying efficiency class, as well as the water and electricity figures on the energy label, taking the reference programme into account. I dry my laundry indoors and want to compare spin performance without overlooking the water and electricity used by each cycle.
Durability For relevant household washing machines sold in France, compare the durability index out of 10 for the exact model and check how it is calculated. According to the ministry responsible for the ecological transition, this index has applied to this category since 8 April 2025. I want to be able to maintain the appliance and look into repair options, without treating the rating as a promise of how long it will last.

What should you avoid?

  • Choosing the largest capacity without considering your laundry

A large drum won’t offer an advantage if your usual loads don’t call for it. ADEME recommends choosing a capacity to suit your needs and says that 7 kg is enough most of the time.

Think about the size of the loads you wash regularly, then compare the capacities and programmes of the models you’re considering.

  • Relying on the stated noise level alone

The figure on the energy label helps you compare models, but it doesn’t tell you everything about how much vibration you might experience at home. Electrolux France and Bosch Electroménager France both highlight levelling, transport bolts and how the laundry is distributed as things to check.

Follow the installation instructions: remove the transport bolts, adjust the feet, check the hoses and distribute the load evenly before spinning.

  • Assuming a brand or loading style will be quiet

UFC-Que Choisir notes that spin noise can remain a weak point across different categories of washing machine. General claims are no substitute for checking the specifications of the exact model.

Compare the information on the labels and, if you look at test results, check that the measurements were taken under comparable conditions.

  • Treating the durability index as a guarantee of how long a machine will last

The French index is based on regulated reliability and repairability criteria; it doesn’t predict how long your appliance will work.

Check the rating and its breakdown for the exact model, along with its care information and warranty terms. These are separate things, so don’t confuse them.

Brands and models to consider

These examples show some of the formats and features worth looking at; a specification for one model won’t necessarily apply to the whole brand.

Bosch

The French range includes front-loading washing machines with a choice of capacities. Bosch’s product page for the WGE03207FR lists a capacity of 8 kg and a spin speed of 1 200 tr/min for this model.

  • Bosch Electroménager France provides instruction manuals and care advice.
  • To assess noise, check the spin noise figure and noise class for the model you choose, rather than relying on general claims that it’s quiet.

Electrolux

Electrolux France lists the top-loading EW8T3653BA as 40 cm wide, with a 6 kg capacity and a spin speed of 1 500 tr/min.

  • The product page for this model links to product documents, including information about its durability index.
  • Electrolux France points out that levelling, the floor, hoses and the load can also affect vibration.

Whirlpool

Whirlpool France lists several top-loading washing machines. Its product page for the TDLR6242SFR/N gives a width of 40 cm and a capacity of 6 kg.

  • For this model, the product page also lists a spin speed of 1 151 tr/min and a noise level of 76 dB. Compare these figures with those of other machines you’re considering.
  • These figures apply to the TDLR6242SFR/N, not to every Whirlpool washing machine.

Miele

Miele France lists the front-loading WSA123 WCS with a capacity of 8 kg and a spin speed of 1 400 tr/min.

  • Model-specific documents let you check care information and the indicators shown for the model you’ve chosen.
  • A claim by the brand about a product’s lifespan isn’t a guarantee of how long it will last. Also compare the relevant index, warranty terms and noise level for the model.

Frequently asked questions

What should I compare first to keep noise down in a flat?

Compare the noise level during the spin cycle and the noise class on the label for the exact model. ADEME recommends checking this label when comparing washing machines. Also check that the machine can be installed securely, as Electrolux France notes that poor levelling or an unbalanced load can increase vibration.

Is a top-loading washing machine better suited to a house share?

Not necessarily. This style may be easier to fit where width is limited, or if you find top-loading more convenient, but you still need to compare the capacity, spin performance and noise level of each model. The type of opening alone doesn’t tell you whether a machine will be quieter.

How can I prevent excessive vibration during the spin cycle?

Follow the instructions to remove the transport bolts, place the appliance on a hard, level floor, adjust its feet and check the hoses. Bosch Electroménager France and Electrolux France recommend these checks. It’s also important to distribute the laundry evenly and avoid overloading the machine. Correct installation still can’t guarantee that no noise will travel through the floor.

What does a washing machine’s durability index mean?

It helps you compare the reliability and repairability of relevant household washing machines on a scale of 10, but it doesn’t guarantee how long an individual appliance will last. According to the ministry responsible for the ecological transition, this index has applied to this category in France since 8 April 2025. Check the rating and its breakdown for the model you’re considering.

Should I choose the largest capacity available?

No: choose a capacity to suit the laundry you wash regularly. ADEME says that a 7 kg drum is enough most of the time. A larger capacity may make sense if your usual loads, such as bulky household linens, call for it.
