Low space beneath a worktop
If headroom is limited, check that an under-worktop front-loader or integrated model is suitable for both the cabinet and the specific appliance. A top-loader won’t work if the worktop prevents you from opening its lid.
To fit a washing machine beneath a worktop, choose a front-loading model explicitly designed for under-worktop installation, or an integrated model suited to the space. A top-loader is a better option when width is limited, but its lid needs clear space above the machine. Whichever type you choose, compare the dimensions of the space, the clearance needed for everyday use and the requirements in the manual for the specific model.

If width is your main constraint, a top-loader is worth considering, provided the top remains accessible. Check its height and depth too: a narrow design won’t solve those other space constraints.
If the appliance is going to stay in a space, think about future access to the connections and maintenance. In France, according to the Ministry for Ecological Transition, the durability index has applied to washing machines since 8 April 2025. It can help you compare models, but won’t tell you whether one will fit in your space.
Start with the dimensions and how the door or lid opens in everyday use. Then check the connections and maintenance requirements before comparing compatible models.
| Criteria | What to check before buying | What matters to consumers |
|---|---|---|
| Space dimensions | Measure the usable width, height and depth separately, then compare them with the model’s installation diagram. | If the space is low or shallow, I want the appliance to fit without making it difficult to use. Around 36% of consumers prioritise this dimensional fit. |
| Opening and loading | Check the room needed to open the lid or door and access the filter. | In a small kitchen, I need to be able to load the washing without a worktop or cabinet door blocking access. This comes first for around 29% of consumers. |
| Connections and maintenance | Locate the water inlet, drain and socket, and check the access requirements in the model’s manual. | If the appliance is in a space, I want to be able to reach its connections and maintain it in future. Around 21% of consumers prioritise this access. |
| Model durability | Once you’ve confirmed the appliance will fit, compare the durability index shown and look up the documentation and parts by reference. | If several models fit the space, I want to be able to assess their durability before choosing. This is the top priority for around 14% of consumers. |
According to Whirlpool, top-loading washing machines are loaded from above. A worktop or shelf could therefore stop you opening the lid, even if the machine is narrow enough.
Choose this type only when there’s clear space above it. Beneath a fixed worktop, look instead at an under-worktop front-loader or a compatible integrated model.
Not all front-loaders can be installed beneath a worktop. Bosch, for example, advises checking that its under-worktop kit is suitable for the model in question.
Choose an appliance explicitly designed for this use, or confirm the kit reference and manual requirements with the manufacturer.
An appliance may fit in the space but still be difficult to connect, level or maintain. For example, the Bosch WAN28258FR manual specifies that the plug must remain freely accessible when the appliance is built in.
Before buying, compare your layout with the installation diagram and the access requirements in the manual for your chosen model.
The durability index that applies to washing machines in France tells you about a product’s durability, not whether it will fit in your space or whether its door will open.
First rule out models that aren’t compatible with your space, then compare the index for those that are.
Worth considering for an under-worktop installation when the model is listed as suitable for this setup.
Worth considering if width is limited but there’s clear space above the appliance.
Worth considering if the space and cabinetry are designed for an integrated washing machine.
These two top-loading models may be suitable when width is the main constraint and the lid can open freely. They’re not a solution beneath a fixed worktop that blocks access.

Worth considering if you’re looking for a top-loader for a space where the lid will remain accessible.

Worth considering if your space leaves enough room to open and load a top-loading washing machine.
Only if there’s enough clear space above to open the lid and load the washing. Whirlpool says that top-loaders are loaded from above, so a fixed worktop will generally make this impractical.
No. The manufacturer must confirm that the model is suitable for under-worktop installation and, where applicable, for use with the necessary kit. Bosch advises checking compatibility for its under-worktop kit.
No. The term ‘integrated’ doesn’t mean you can skip checking the space and cabinetry. Consult the model’s installation diagram to check the dimensions, whether a door panel needs fitting and the technical access requirements.
For the front-loading and top-loading washing machines covered by Electrolux’s support guide, no: the brand says they’re designed for a cold-water supply. Follow the connection instructions for the model you buy.
It can help you compare models that already fit your space, but it doesn’t confirm that their dimensions are suitable. According to the Ministry for Ecological Transition, the index has applied to washing machines in France since 8 April 2025.
