Which configuration is right for you?

A narrow space

If a front-loader won’t fit and there’s clear space above, a top-loading washing machine is worth considering. Check its depth too, and make sure there’s enough room to open the lid: its narrow width won’t solve either of those constraints.

A space under a worktop

Look for a front-loader whose instructions confirm that it can be installed this way. Some models have a removable top, but don’t assume this feature is available on all front-loaders.

A shallow space

If there’s enough width for a front-loader, compare compact or slim models. Check the overall depth, connections, door clearance and whether the capacity suits your usual laundry loads.

What should you check before choosing?

First measure the space and the route into the room. Then check that you’ll be able to open the machine and handle your laundry once it’s installed.

What to consider What to check What I need
Dimensions and access Compare the machine’s overall width, depth and height with the measurements of the space and the delivery route. Allow room for the lid or door to open and for loading laundry. According to the French National Consumer Institute, top-loaders are commonly 40 to 45 cm wide, but this won’t necessarily solve a depth constraint. My space is narrow, so I need to be able to fit the machine and open and use its drum without anything getting in the way.
Installation For under-worktop installation, check that the front-loader’s instructions allow it; Bosch specifies a removable top for some models only. For stacking, check both appliances, the kit, permitted depths and the available height: the Bosch WTZ2741C and Electrolux E1WYHSK2 kits each have their own requirements. I’d like to keep my worktop clear or put a tumble dryer above the washing machine, without assuming that any front-loader will be suitable.
Capacity and energy label Choose a capacity that suits the loads you usually wash. ADEME recommends checking the energy label to compare factors such as water and energy use, spin performance and noise; compare figures measured on the same basis. I want a capacity that works for everyday use, and noise information if the machine will be running near living areas.
Performance in use Don’t assume washing performance from the top-loading, front-loading or compact format alone. Where relevant test results are available, compare washing, rinsing, spin performance, cycle length and ease of use; UFC-Que Choisir assesses these aspects in its washing machine tests. A machine that fits in the room should also meet my expectations for the cycles I use.

Mistakes to avoid in a tight space

  • Measuring width alone

A narrow top-loader may still be deep, while a compact front-loader may save depth without solving a lack of width. In either case, a machine that fits in the space may still be difficult to open.

Measure all three dimensions separately, along with the delivery route and the space needed to open and load your chosen model. Compare these measurements with its product details and instructions.

  • Assuming any front-loader will fit under a worktop

Whether a front-loader can go under a worktop depends on its design and instructions. A top-loader, which opens from above, is generally not suitable for this setup.

Look for explicit confirmation that the exact model can be installed under a worktop. Don’t remove an appliance’s top unless its instructions say you can.

  • Planning a stack without checking the kit

A tumble dryer isn’t automatically suitable for stacking just because the washing machine is a front-loader. Stacking kits from Bosch and Electrolux, for example, have specific requirements for the appliances and their depth.

Before ordering, check both appliance model numbers against the kit’s compatibility list. Also check the total height and installation instructions.

  • Choosing on capacity or energy rating alone

The capacity should suit your usual laundry loads; the energy rating on its own doesn’t tell you about water use, spin performance or noise.

Choose a capacity that matches the way you do your laundry, then compare all the information on the energy label, as ADEME recommends.

A guide to some of the brands

These examples show formats and accessories to check for each model; they don’t represent the features of every appliance from a particular brand.

Whirlpool

An example of a top-loader for a width constraint: Whirlpool lists the TDLR55140SFR as 40 cm wide, 90 cm high and 60 cm deep.

  • Its width may suit a narrow space between units.
  • You’ll still need to check its depth and allow access from above to open the lid.

Bosch

Bosch lists some front-loaders with removable tops for under-worktop installation, and provides separate information about stacking kits.

  • This information can help you find a specific model for an under-worktop or stacked setup.
  • The WTZ2741C kit is for a standard-depth washing machine over 55 cm deep and must be suitable for the tumble dryer; it doesn’t confirm compatibility for every appliance pairing.

Beko

Beko’s French range includes washing machines with a depth of 45 cm, which may be worth considering if space is limited front to back.

  • This measurement gives you a useful point of comparison for a shallow space.
  • Check the overall depth, door clearance and permitted installation options for each model.

Candy

Candy’s French slim front-loader range includes models listed with capacities of 7, 8 and 9 kg.

  • It gives you several listed capacities to compare across slim models.
  • ‘Slim’ doesn’t mean all models have the same depth: check the dimensions and instructions for the model you’re considering.

Washing machines and washer-dryers available on Joybuy

This selection includes a top-loader and two front-loading washer-dryers. The washer-dryers may suit households looking to wash and dry with one appliance, but their inclusion here doesn’t confirm that they can be installed under a worktop or stacked with another tumble dryer.

Candy TCA464TM4-S ProWash 500 top-loading washing machine

Candy TCA464TM4-S ProWash 500, 6 kg top-loading washing machine

Its top-loading design may suit a space where a front-loader’s door would be in the way, provided there’s room above to open the lid. The model name lists a 6 kg capacity, 1,400 rpm, a B rating, an Inverter motor, Wi-Fi and 17 programmes. Check the full dimensions before choosing this setup; its upward-opening lid generally makes it unsuitable for installation under a worktop.

Samsung WD11DG6B85BEU3 front-loading washer-dryer

Samsung WD11DG6B85BEU3, 11/6 kg washer-dryer

This front-loading model has a listed capacity of 11 kg for washing and 6 kg for drying. Compare both capacities with your needs rather than treating 11 kg as the drying capacity. Its name lists an A rating. Allow room to open the door, and check the dimensions and any under-worktop installation instructions in the manual.

Samsung WD10HG6U34BEU3 front-loading washer-dryer

Samsung WD10HG6U34BEU3, 10/6 kg washer-dryer

This front-loader lists a capacity of 10 kg for washing and 6 kg for drying. Compare each capacity separately with your usual laundry loads. Its name lists a D rating. Before choosing it for a tight space, measure the clearance needed for the door and check the dimensions and proposed installation in the product documentation.

Frequently asked questions

What should I measure before ordering a washing machine for a narrow space?

Measure the width, depth and height of the space, as well as the route into the room. Allow extra room to open the lid or door and handle your laundry, then compare everything with the overall dimensions and instructions for the exact model.

Can a top-loading washing machine go under a worktop?

Generally not: its lid needs to open from above. The French National Consumer Institute distinguishes this from the constraints of front-loaders. For under-worktop installation, choose a front-loader whose manufacturer explicitly allows it, and don’t assume its top is removable.

Can you put a tumble dryer on top of any front-loading washing machine?

No. You need to confirm that both appliances are compatible with the stacking kit, and check the required depths and installation height. For example, for its own accessories, Bosch specifies a depth of over 55 cm for the standard washing machine used with the WTZ2741C kit, while Electrolux gives a range of 52 to 67 cm for the E1WYHSK2 kit. These figures don’t apply to every setup.

What should I compare on the energy label once I’ve chosen a format?

Compare factors such as energy use per 100 cycles, water use per cycle, spin performance and noise on a like-for-like basis. ADEME also recommends choosing a washing machine capacity to suit the loads you actually wash: the energy label doesn’t replace this practical check.
