Who is this choice for?

Someone in a studio flat with limited depth

You have limited depth, but can set aside enough width and open a door without blocking the way. In its publication of 17 December 2025, UFC-Que Choisir discusses choosing a washing machine for small spaces.

Someone with a narrow room

You’re mainly short of width or clearance in front of the machine. A top-loader can avoid the need for clearance in front of a door, provided there’s room to open the lid. Check the manufacturer’s specifications for the dimensions of the exact model.

A student without space for a standard machine

You’re considering a backup appliance because there isn’t enough space or you don’t have suitable connections. Some student residences, such as the Rosa Parks residence featured by Crous de Paris, have a launderette. Check what facilities are available where you live.

What should you check?

Compact or slim front-loader

Choose this: if depth is limited, but there’s enough width and clearance in front of the door.

Bear in mind: an open door can still block the way. Compare the installation dimensions for the exact model.

Top-loading washing machine

Choose this: if width or the clearance needed for a front-loading door is the main obstacle.

Bear in mind: you’ll need enough depth and overhead clearance to open the lid. A top-loader isn’t necessarily shallow.

Mini washing machine for occasional use

Choose this: if a standard machine can’t be installed and small loads suit your needs.

Bear in mind: capacity, spin-drying, water heating and connections vary by model. A mini machine won’t necessarily handle your everyday washing.

UFC-Que Choisir explains that some compact front-loaders are shallower while retaining standard width. The four priorities below can help you check whether your chosen format also suits the space and installation requirements.

Consideration What to check before buying Who is most concerned about it
Depth and access Measure the space, delivery route, room behind the machine for connections and the clearance needed to open the door of the exact model. If my space is shallow, I want to save room without blocking the way in front of the door. This is a priority for around 31% of consumers who put shallow depth first.
Width and access for loading Compare the available width, depth and height with the appliance’s dimensions and the space needed to open its lid or door. I’m mainly short of width or clearance in front of the machine, but still need easy access for loading. Around 31% of consumers are thought to share this priority.
Connections and safety Locate the water supply, drainage, socket and any protection required by the instructions. Have the installation checked if you’re unsure. I want to know whether the water supply, drainage and electrical supply will allow for a suitable installation before I choose. This is a concern for around 23% of consumers who prioritise connections.
Capacity and occasional use Compare the capacity with your usual loads. For a mini model, also check spin-drying, water heating, and how it’s filled and drained. If I can’t install a standard machine, I’m looking to wash small loads without expecting a mini model to handle all my laundry. Around 15% of consumers are thought to have this need.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing a “slim” model based on depth alone

A front-loader also needs enough width and clearance in front of its door. Connections can increase the space it takes up once installed.

Compare the installation plan for the exact model with the dimensions of the space and the access route.

Delivery or installation may not be possible if the route or space isn’t suitable.

  • Assuming a top-loader is compact in every dimension

The French specifications for the Indesit EBTWS50400FR and Electrolux EW6T3465DA models each list a width of 40 cm and a depth of 60 cm. The lid also needs overhead clearance.

Measure the depth and clearance above the machine, taking cupboards and access into account.

  • Assuming a mini washing machine is a like-for-like replacement

Capacity, spin-drying, water heating and filling methods vary by appliance. Some are designed for small loads only.

Compare your usual loads with the instructions and check whether there’s a launderette in your residence.

For bulky items, you may need several cycles or to use a launderette, depending on the appliance and what you need to wash.

  • Planning for the machine without checking the connections

Having a free space doesn’t guarantee that the water supply, drainage or electrical installation will be suitable.

Check the instructions and connections before buying. If your plans involve altering a rented property or its fixtures, ask the landlord for written permission, as ANIL advises.

Adding connections may require plumbing or electrical work. Changes to a rented property may also need to be reversed.

Brands to consider by format

Candy

Candy’s French range includes slim washing machines, making it a useful place to look for front-loading models.

  • The range includes models with different capacities.
  • The slim label doesn’t guarantee that every model will fit a shallow space. Check the dimensions and instructions for the exact model.

Indesit

The EBTWS50400FR top-loader is one option to consider if you’re looking for a top-loading machine.

  • Indesit France lists this model as 40 cm wide, 60 cm deep and with a 5 kg capacity.
  • Width alone doesn’t tell you how much space it needs. Check its depth and the clearance required to open the lid.

Electrolux

The EW6T3465DA top-loader is a 6 kg model to consider if you’re looking for a top-loading machine.

  • Electrolux lists this model’s dimensions as 890 × 400 × 600 mm (H × W × D).
  • Check that the lid can open in the space you have. Benefits attributed to SensiCare are the manufacturer’s claims, not the results of independent comparisons.

Haier

The Mini Drum HW50-BP12307U1-S is an example of an automatic 5 kg compact front-loader, rather than a portable mini machine for occasional use.

  • Haier lists this model’s dimensions as 510 × 492 × 700 mm (W × D × H).
  • A compact format doesn’t remove the need for door clearance or suitable connections. The manufacturer’s efficiency claims aren’t an independent comparison.

Frequently asked questions

What should I measure before buying a washing machine for a tight space?

Measure the available width, depth and height, the delivery route and the clearance needed to open the door. Then compare these with the specifications for the exact model. Also locate the water supply, drainage and socket: the appliance’s dimensions alone don’t guarantee that it can be installed.

Can you install a washing machine in a bathroom?

Yes, subject to electrical safety requirements. Promotelec states that the appliance must be outside zones 0, 1 and 2 and the concealed zone, be earthed and be supplied by a circuit protected by a 30 mA residual-current device. Have the actual location and installation checked. This doesn’t mean that any position near a shower or bath is automatically suitable.

What electrical supply should I check for a standard washing machine?

Legrand specifies a 16 A socket on a dedicated circuit, protected by a circuit breaker rated at no more than 20 A and a type A residual-current device. Also check the model’s instructions. If you’re unsure about the existing installation, have it inspected before connecting the machine rather than assuming it’s suitable just because there’s a socket.

Does a tenant need to ask the landlord for permission?

ANIL notes that alterations to a rented property or its fixtures require the landlord’s written permission. This applies to plans to change the installations; it doesn’t mean that every connection to existing, suitable fittings counts as an alteration.

What should I check if the washing machine moves after installation?

Check that it’s level and that the transit bolts have been removed, following the instructions for your model. Bosch highlights both points when installing a washing machine.
