Who are these formats suitable for?

Tenants with a shallow alcove

If you have around 60 cm of width but need to keep the space in front of the machine clear, a slimline front-loader is worth measuring up for. Its reduced depth is only part of the story: the door also needs room to open. UFC-Que Choisir and Electrolux France highlight these two separate requirements.

Residents with very limited width

If an appliance around 60 cm wide won’t fit in your bathroom or recess, consider narrow top-loading models. Examples published by Electrolux France and Whirlpool France are 40 cm wide, but you’ll need to keep the space above them clear.

Residents without a suitable space for a standard machine

If you can’t install a standard washing machine, a mini model may be suitable for smaller loads. Check its actual capacity and installation requirements: the portable appliances described by UFC-Que Choisir don’t necessarily offer the same features as a freestanding compact washing machine.

How do the different formats compare?

In a small home, first check that the appliance will fit, can be opened and is suitable for installation. Then choose a capacity that works for your usual laundry loads.

Factor What to check before you buy Who this matters to
Size and clearance Measure the width, depth and height, then check the delivery route and the space needed to open the door or lid. Consult the clearances specified in the instruction manual. If the machine could block the way in a room, I need to be able to install and open it without obstruction; around 36% of consumers would prioritise this constraint.
Capacity and laundry routine Consider how much dry laundry you usually have and how often you run a cycle. UFC-Que Choisir suggests 5 to 7 kg as a guide for one or two people; for a washer-dryer, check the washing and drying capacities separately. If I do laundry regularly or wash bulky items, I want to avoid splitting every load; around 29% of consumers would prioritise this.
Installation or occasional use Check the manual for the connections, drainage and installation requirements of the model you’re considering. If you rent your home, clarify any plans to alter the property or its fittings before work begins. When I don’t have a suitable space for a standard machine, I’m mainly looking for a practical way to do laundry at home; around 21% of consumers would prioritise this need.
Durability Compare the durability index displayed for the relevant washing machines in France, then look at its breakdown and the model’s care documents. Also check that its format and capacity are suitable. If replacing a machine in a cramped space would be particularly difficult, I look beyond its dimensions and consider its durability; around 14% of consumers would put this concern first.

What to avoid before you buy

  • Relying on the word “compact” alone

A slimline front-loader mainly reduces depth: according to Electrolux France, models in this category are generally around 60 cm wide. A top-loader may be narrower, but its lid opens upwards.

Note down each measurement separately and check the opening clearance on a plan, taking the installation instructions for the exact model into account.

  • Choosing the smallest drum without considering your laundry

UFC-Que Choisir points out that a capacity that’s too small can mean running more cycles, while a large drum that’s regularly underfilled can lead to unnecessary energy use.

For one or two people, use 5 to 7 kg as a guide, then adjust your choice to how often you do laundry and the bulky items you want to wash.

Splitting loads also takes more time and uses water and electricity for every extra cycle.

  • Confusing washing and drying capacity on a mini washer-dryer

Haier France lists a 5 kg washing capacity but only 2,5 kg for drying on the HWD50-BP12307U1. So a full-capacity wash load can’t be dried all at once at the stated drying capacity.

Compare the two figures and consider whether you’ll actually use the drying function.

  • Planning work in a rented home without checking what consent you need

Adding a freestanding appliance is not the same as altering rented premises or fittings. ANIL highlights the importance of getting the landlord’s written consent when a project involves alterations.

Before changing a water supply, waste outlet or any fittings in the home, set out the work you have in mind and ask for written consent.

Brands to consider by format

Electrolux

A brand to consider when comparing slimline front-loaders and narrow top-loaders.

  • Electrolux France describes slimline front-loaders with depths of 33 to 45 cm. Its EW8T3653BA top-loader is listed at 890 × 400 × 600 mm and has a 6 kg capacity.
  • These dimensions apply to specific formats or models: measure the version you’re considering and check its opening clearance before deciding.

Whirlpool

A brand to consider if the available width points you towards a top-loader.

  • Whirlpool France lists the TDLR6247FR/N at 40 × 60 × 90 cm with a 6 kg capacity, giving you a concrete example of its footprint.
  • This product listing doesn’t mean all Whirlpool top-loaders have the same dimensions; also check how much space is needed above the model you choose.

Haier

A brand to consider for a compact freestanding washer-dryer, which is different from a small portable appliance.

  • Haier France lists the HWD50-BP12307U1 at 510 × 488 × 700 mm, with a washing capacity of 5 kg.
  • Its stated drying capacity is just 2,5 kg; check the installation requirements for this model before considering it for this use.

Candy

A brand to consider when comparing slimline front-loaders with top-loading models.

  • Candy France lists depths of 33 to 46 cm for its slimline models.
  • This range doesn’t give you the full dimensions or clearances for a specific appliance: check its product listing and instruction manual.

Joybuy models for two different space constraints

These two washing machines offer different options for a small home: the top-loading Candy if width is your main constraint, and the Hisense to consider if you need a front-loader for a shallow alcove. Measure the space before choosing a model.

Candy TCA464TM4-S ProWash 500 top-loading washing machine

Candy TCA464TM4-S ProWash 500, 6 kg top-loading washing machine

Worth considering if width is your main constraint and the lid can open freely.

Top-loading, with a stated capacity of 6 kg and a spin speed of 1 400 tr/min. The model name also mentions an Inverter motor, Wi-Fi and 17 programmes.

Compare its dimensions and the clearances specified in the manual with the space you have available.

Hisense WF5I8043BWF washing machine

Hisense WF5I8043BWF, 8 kg washing machine

If you’re looking for a front-loader for a shallow alcove, check this model’s dimensions against the available space, including room for the door to open.

Stated capacity of 8 kg, spin speed of 1 400 tr/min and an Inverter motor.

At 8 kg, its capacity is above the 5 to 7 kg guide given by UFC-Que Choisir for one or two people. Choose this capacity based on your usual loads, not simply the size of your home.

Frequently asked questions

Is a slimline washing machine always narrower?

No. For the front-loaders described by UFC-Que Choisir and Electrolux France, “slimline” mainly means a reduced depth, usually between 33 and 45 cm. They’re often still close to 60 cm wide, so check all three dimensions of the model you’re interested in.

When should you choose a top-loader instead of a slimline front-loader?

A top-loader is worth considering if you’re short on width and have clear space above the machine. The models mentioned by Electrolux France and Whirlpool France are 40 cm wide, but you’ll still need to check their depth and allow room for the lid to open.

Can a mini washing machine handle all the laundry for a household?

Not necessarily. The small-capacity portable appliances described by UFC-Que Choisir may require several cycles and be less suitable for bulky items. Don’t confuse them with a compact freestanding washer-dryer; even then, compare its washing and drying capacities separately.

Do you need your landlord’s consent to alter a water supply?

If your plans involve altering rented premises or fittings, ask your landlord for written consent before work begins, as ANIL advises. Simply installing an appliance is different from altering the existing installations, so consider what you’re actually planning to do.

What is a washing machine’s durability index for?

In France, this score out of 10 helps you assess the reliability and repairability of the washing machines covered by the scheme. According to the ministry responsible for ecology, it has been gradually replacing the repairability index for this category since 8 April 2025. Compare the details for models that already suit your space and laundry needs.
