Who is this guide for?

Studio flat residents who live close to their washing machine

If the appliance is near your bed or living area, it’s particularly important to consider the noise during the spin cycle. Compare the model’s acoustic information, then check that the space allows for a stable installation.

People with a narrow space for their washing machine

It’s not enough for the machine to fit the alcove: you also need to be able to move it into place, open the door or lid and access the connections. A top-loading machine may suit a narrow space, but that doesn’t tell you how noisy it will be.

People who dry their washing indoors

If you dry your washing in your living area, compare spin-drying efficiency too. If the same space needs to be used for both washing and drying, check the specific features of washer-dryers rather than assuming how they’ll perform based on washing data alone.

What should you check?

First rule out any models that can’t be installed properly, then compare their noise levels during the spin cycle. Choose between a front-loading or top-loading machine based on the space available and the specifications of the exact model. Consider a washer-dryer only if drying is also a priority.

What matters What to check Who this matters to
Noise during the spin cycle Compare the noise emissions in dB and the acoustic class of the exact model. If an independent test of that model is available, check that too. If the machine spins near my living area or bed, I want to distinguish between its stated noise level and how disruptive it might be in my home. Around 33% of consumers would put quiet spinning at the top of their list.
Size Measure the space and access route, then check the depth, height and clearance needed to open the machine. In a small bathroom, I need to be able to install the machine without blocking the way or preventing the door from opening. For around 27% of consumers, the space it takes up would be the main priority.
Installation stability Check the floor, water supply and waste outlet. Follow the instructions for removing the transit bolts and adjusting all four feet. If the machine is going near my living area, I want to avoid knocks or vibrations caused by an unstable installation. For around 27% of consumers, whether the machine can be installed properly would come before other considerations.
Drying your washing Compare the spin-drying efficiency class. For a washer-dryer, also check the information specific to its drying cycles. If I dry my washing at home, I want to factor in spin-drying efficiency or have washing and drying in one place. This would be a priority for around 13% of consumers.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Trusting the word ‘quiet’ on its own

A marketing claim is no substitute for checking the stated noise emissions during the spin cycle and the model’s acoustic class. An independent test provides another measurement, taken according to its own methodology.

Make a note of the acoustic information for the models you’re considering. If an exact-model test is available, check how the measurements were taken.

  • Measuring the width and nothing else

A machine may fit in an alcove but still be difficult to use if there isn’t enough clearance for the door, lid or connections. For example, LG lists a depth of 56,5 cm and a depth of 110 cm with the door open for the F94V41WH. These dimensions don’t apply to all front-loading models.

Measure the route to the space too, then check all the required clearances against the specifications for your chosen model.

  • Adding anti-vibration pads before fixing the installation

According to Bosch support documentation, leaving the transit bolts in place or failing to adjust the feet can contribute to knocks and vibrations.

First, follow the instructions to remove the transit bolts and level the machine on a stable floor. Only consider anti-vibration accessories once you’ve completed these checks, and if they’re suitable for your installation.

  • Assuming a top-loader will be quieter

A narrow design can solve a space constraint, but the type of loading alone doesn’t tell you how noisy a model will be.

Compare the dB rating during the spin cycle and the acoustic class of each machine that fits your space.

Brands to consider for your needs

Bosch

Its support documentation is useful when preparing to install a washing machine near your living area.

  • Bosch explains how to remove the transit bolts and adjust the feet.
  • This installation advice doesn’t prove that a Bosch model will be quieter than another machine. Compare the acoustic information for the specific models you’re considering.

LG

Some LG front-loading washing machine specifications give both the stated noise level and the dimensions needed for installation.

  • For the F94V41WH, LG lists 72 dB(A) during the spin cycle and dimensions of 60 × 85 × 56,5 cm, with a depth of 110 cm when the door is open.
  • This information from the manufacturer applies to this model only. It doesn’t describe the entire LG range or the noise you’ll hear in your home.

Whirlpool

A top-loading model may be worth considering when width is your main constraint.

  • Whirlpool lists the TW6522FRESHCAREFR as 40 cm wide, 90 cm high and 60 cm deep.
  • Width doesn’t tell you how disruptive the noise will be. Check the spin-cycle noise information and the clearance above the model you’re considering.

Frequently asked questions

Which noise figure should I compare for a washing machine near the living area?

Compare the noise emissions during the spin cycle, expressed in dB, and the exact model’s acoustic class on its energy label. ADEME recommends checking the label to help you choose, including with regard to noise. However, the stated figure doesn’t describe the vibrations caused by your own installation.

Does the dB figure on the label match the measurement in a test?

No. The label gives the stated noise emission, while an independent test follows its own methodology. UFC-Que Choisir says that it measures noise levels as one of its test criteria, while Les Numériques describes measurements taken during washing and spinning. Check the model and testing conditions before comparing results.

What should I check to reduce vibrations after installation?

First check that the transit bolts have been removed and all four feet are firmly on a stable floor, following the instructions. Bosch support documentation also recommends levelling the machine and checking the drain hose.

Is a top-loading washing machine quieter because it’s narrow?

No. Its width may make it easier to fit into an alcove, but it doesn’t tell you how noisy it will be. Compare the noise emissions during the spin cycle and the acoustic class of the models that fit your space, and remember to allow room to open the lid.

Why check spin-drying efficiency if you dry your washing in your studio flat?

As ADEME points out, better spin-drying efficiency is useful when your washing needs to dry indoors afterwards. Consider it separately from noise during the spin cycle: the right choice needs to take both into account, as well as the space you have available for drying your washing.
