Narrow access
If you need to keep a walkway clear or fit the machine into a narrow alcove, check the model’s width and the clearance needed to open the lid. Que Choisir Ensemble suggests considering a top-loader when width is the main obstacle.
In a narrow utility room, choose the format based first on the dimension you’re short of. A top-loader takes up less width and doesn’t need the front clearance required to open a porthole door, while a shallow front-loader usually remains close to 60 cm wide. A standard front-loader may still work if the machine, its door and its connections all fit in the room. Then compare the capacity with your usual laundry loads, followed by the energy label, spin noise and durability rating for the specific model, bearing in mind guidance from Que Choisir Ensemble, ADEME and the Ministry of the Economy.

If there’s enough width for a porthole door but the machine could protrude into the room, compare its overall depth and the space needed with the door open. LG’s French product information lists these measurements for the F82SV52IXS.
If you want to wash your usual laundry without running extra cycles, compare the capacity with your household’s laundry and check that a front-loader will fit in the space. ADEME says that a 7 kg capacity is usually enough to avoid running cycles with underfilled drums.
Consider it if: width is the main constraint and the lid can open without obstruction.
Check: the clearance above the machine, as well as the dimensions of the specific model, including its depth and height. Electrolux France lists dimensions of 890 × 400 × 600 mm for the EW6T7622HB.
Consider it if: you have around 60 cm of width available but need to limit the depth. Que Choisir Ensemble describes compact front-loaders with depths of 33 to 45 cm.
Check: the overall depth and the clearance needed for the porthole door. For the LG F82SV52IXS, LG lists a chassis depth of 475 mm, 535 mm including protruding parts, and 1 015 mm with the door open at 90°.
Consider it if: the space, access route and clearance for the porthole door allow you to install a model of suitable dimensions.
Check: the capacity should suit your household’s laundry. A larger capacity isn’t useful if it doesn’t match your usual loads.
| Criteria | What to check | Who should prioritise it? |
|---|---|---|
| Width, access and opening clearance | Measure the space and delivery route, then check that the lid or porthole door can open fully and that there’s room to move around the machine. | If access is narrow, I’d prioritise a machine that fits in the alcove without blocking the walkway or making the laundry difficult to reach. Around 33% of consumers prioritise width and access. |
| Overall depth and porthole door clearance | Compare the overall depth, space for connections and clearance in front of the machine with the door open. Chassis depth alone may not give you the full picture. | If a front-loader fits the available width but could protrude into the room, I’d check its overall depth and how far the door opens. Around 27% of consumers prioritise a shallow depth. |
| Capacity suited to your laundry | Compare the rated capacity with your usual loads and bulky items. ADEME says a 7 kg washing machine is usually enough to avoid running extra cycles with underfilled drums. | To wash the household’s laundry regularly without running extra cycles, I’d look for a capacity that suits the loads you actually do. Around 20% of consumers prioritise having enough capacity. |
| Energy use, noise and durability | Compare the energy label and its units, spin noise and durability rating for each model. In France, this rating has applied to top-loading and front-loading washing machines since 8 April 2025, according to the Ministry of the Economy. | Once I’ve checked that the machine will fit, I’d compare energy use, noise and durability to help choose between models. Around 20% of consumers prioritise long-term use. |
A shallow front-loader may still be 60 cm wide, as shown by the LG F82SV52IXS listed by LG France. So it won’t necessarily solve a lack of width.
First work out whether width or depth is the limiting measurement, then compare the model’s full dimensions.
If the machine won’t fit, delivery or installation may need to be rearranged.
The lid, open porthole door and protruding parts can make access difficult, even if the chassis fits in the alcove.
Check that the door or lid can open fully, allow for connections and measure the route to the space.
A capacity that’s too small may mean running extra cycles. A larger capacity won’t solve a space problem if the machine can’t be installed.
Compare the rated capacity with your usual loads and bulky items, then check the model’s dimensions.
Loads that don’t fit in the drum may mean you need to run extra cycles.
The PerfectCare 600 EW6T7622HB is an example of a 6 kg top-loading washing machine listed by Electrolux France.
Whirlpool France lists the TDLR6247FR/N top-loader with a maximum capacity of 6 kg.

Measure the width, height and depth of the space, as well as the route into the room and the clearance needed to open the lid or porthole door. Check the model’s overall dimensions and connections: the chassis measurement alone may not account for all the space you need.
Follow the instructions for your model. Bosch recommends removing the transit bolts and adjusting the feet to level the machine. Also check the instructions before doing anything to the filter or drain hose.
In France, the legal guarantee of conformity covers new, second-hand and refurbished goods sold by a trader to a private individual. The period for making a claim is two years, according to information published by the Ministry of the Economy on 9 September 2026. An optional commercial guarantee does not replace it.
Since 8 April 2025, the durability rating has replaced the repairability rating for the top-loading and front-loading washing machines covered in France, according to the Ministry of the Economy. Check the rating and criteria for the model you’re considering to compare different options.
