Renters checking the installation
After moving in, find out which connections are actually available before you order. It’s important to distinguish between connecting an appliance to an existing installation and any work that might be needed.
Before choosing a washing machine for a rented home, check that there’s a suitable water supply, drain and dedicated earthed socket, then measure the space, openings and access route. If a model can be installed without any alterations, compare its capacity, noise levels and stated consumption. If no appliance suits the available connections and space, using an off-site laundry is another option.

If the space is narrow, shallow or restricted in height, check the dimensions of the exact model and make sure its door or lid can open.
If the washing machine is near a living or sleeping area, compare the noise information for the model and the figures on its energy label. ADEME recommends checking water and energy use, spin performance and noise in particular.
First check the connections and access, then compare the capacity, noise and consumption of appliances that can actually be installed.
| What matters | What to check when buying | Who it matters most to |
|---|---|---|
| Usable connections | Water supply, drain and dedicated earthed socket; the requirements in the model’s manual. | After moving in, I want to know whether it can be connected without any work. This is a priority for around 28% of consumers. |
| Space and access | Dimensions of the space and delivery route; clearance to open the door or lid. | If space is limited, I’m looking for an appliance that will fit and can be opened once installed. Space is a priority for around 28% of consumers. |
| Noise | Noise information for the exact model and how close it is to living spaces or neighbours. | If the machine is near a bedroom or neighbours, I want to factor in noise before choosing. This matters to around 17% of consumers. |
| Suitable capacity | Maximum capacity and your usual laundry loads, including bedding and towels. | To avoid a drum that’s unsuitable for my loads, I compare the capacity with my household’s needs. The amount of laundry per cycle is a priority for around 16% of consumers. |
| Consumption and after-sales support | Water and energy figures on the label; durability index and terms of the services on offer. | Among the appliances I can install, I want to check consumption and understand what after-sales protection is available. This is a priority for around 11% of consumers. |
For electrical connections, Legrand distinguishes between the socket, the dedicated circuit and its protective devices, so simply having a socket doesn’t confirm that the installation is suitable. Electrolux’s pre-installation guide states that its service doesn’t include plumbing or electrical work. Check what’s covered by the service offered by your chosen retailer.
Measure the width, depth and height, as well as the route to the space and the clearance needed to open the appliance. A top-loading model needs clearance above it; a compact model still needs suitable connections and the same checks. To compare consumption, ADEME advises using energy-label figures on a like-for-like basis. In France, the durability index applies to washing machines placed on the market since 8 April 2025, according to the ministry responsible for the ecological transition.
An appliance may fit in the room but still be impossible to connect there. A delivery and installation service doesn’t necessarily include creating an electrical or plumbing installation.
Ask someone to identify the existing connections, check the manual for the exact model and get a professional to inspect anything you’re unsure about before ordering.
Depth, height, opening clearance and access are all separate considerations. One measurement on its own doesn’t confirm that the appliance can be installed and used in its intended space.
Measure the space and access route, then check the model’s installation plan to confirm the clearances and room needed for the connections.
Width and loading style don’t tell you how noisy a machine is. ADEME recommends checking the appliance’s noise information; Service Public notes that neighbourhood noise can amount to an abnormal disturbance both during the day and at night.
Compare the noise figures for the exact model and take nearby rooms and the building into account.
An optional commercial warranty extension is separate from the legal guarantee of conformity, which applies under the rules for purchases between a consumer and a professional seller.
Check who the seller is and what the extension adds before taking it out.

Ask your landlord or property manager to identify the existing installations, check the manual for the exact model’s requirements and get a professional to inspect anything you’re unsure about. The presence of a socket or hose alone doesn’t confirm that the installation is suitable.
Not with the service described by Electrolux: it covers connecting the appliance to a compliant installation, but excludes plumbing and electrical work. Check what’s included by your chosen retailer before ordering.
For a residential tenancy covered by the obligations outlined by CAF and ADIL, alterations to the property require the landlord’s written consent. Don’t automatically treat connecting to existing services as the same as carrying out work; plumbing or electrical work must be considered separately.
Not every household does. ADEME says that a 7 kg washing machine is enough for most households. Use this as a starting point and compare it with your usual loads and the capacities of the model’s programmes.
No. You can’t tell how noisy a machine is from its width or format. Compare the information for the exact model and consider nearby rooms; Service Public notes that noise can amount to an abnormal neighbourhood disturbance both during the day and at night.
