Who is each format for?

A narrow recess

If you have around 40 cm of width and can keep the space above the appliance clear, consider a top-loader. Be sure to measure the depth too: the models featured by Electrolux France and Candy France are 60 cm deep.

A shallow kitchen or cupboard

If you can fit a width of around 60 cm but the appliance might stick out into the walkway, consider a front-loader with reduced depth. Leave enough room to open the door and accommodate the connections.

Installation in a bathroom

In a bathroom or an adjoining cupboard, the format alone won’t tell you whether the space is suitable. Have the appliance’s position and electrical installation checked before choosing a model.

Which criteria should you check first?

Top-loading washing machine

Consider it: when width is limited and the lid can open freely above the appliance.

Bear in mind: top loading means you can’t put a fixed worktop above the machine. The Electrolux and Candy models featured here are both 60 cm deep.

Shallow front-loader

Consider it: if the width works but the depth of the recess, or the walkway in front of it, limits your options. Candy France lists slim or compact front-loaders with depths of 33 to 46 cm, depending on the model.

Bear in mind: a shallower cabinet doesn’t eliminate the space needed for the door and connections.

Standard front-loader

Consider it: if the recess and access allow for the dimensions of your chosen model. As a guide, Bosch France lists the WGE03207FR at 848 × 598 × 588 mm, with an 8 kg capacity.

Bear in mind: you’ll also need to allow for the door to open and for the space required during installation.

Criterion What to check Who is it for?
Width and top loading Measure the width at the narrowest point and check the clearance needed to open the lid. If my recess is narrow but clear above, I want to be able to fit the appliance and load the washing without difficulty; around 31% of consumers prioritise width.
Depth and door clearance Compare the overall depth with the recess, then check there’s room for the hoses and to open the door. In a kitchen or narrow walkway, I want to avoid a front-loader getting in the way; depth is the top priority for around 31% of consumers.
Capacity and standard front-loaders Check the stated capacity, full dimensions and delivery access for the model you’re considering. If the space can accommodate a standard front-loader, I want a capacity that suits my usual washing and the convenience of a door; around 19% of consumers prioritise this combination.
Spin noise Compare the noise levels during the spin cycle on a like-for-like basis and follow the instructions when installing the appliance. If the machine is close to living areas, I want to minimise disruption during the spin cycle; for around 19% of consumers, noise comes before other criteria.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Looking only at the stated width

A narrow top-loader may still be 60 cm deep, while a compact front-loader needs space in front of its door.

Measure the recess and delivery access, then check the height, depth, opening clearance and connections against the installation diagram for the exact model.

  • Assuming a bathroom cupboard is automatically suitable

A cupboard door alone doesn’t resolve the requirements relating to the appliance’s position and electrical supply.

If the machine is to be installed in a bathroom, have the location and electrical circuit assessed before you buy.

  • Confusing spin speed with quiet operation

Spin speed alone doesn’t tell you how noisy a model is. UFC-Que Choisir measures noise levels separately as part of its testing process.

Compare noise data for the specific models you’re considering and, where available, test results carried out on a comparable basis. Follow the installation instructions too, including removing the transit bolts.

  • Mistaking an old product page for a current listing

Whirlpool France still has pages for top-loaders that are no longer in its catalogue; their specifications may not describe the models currently on sale.

Check the exact reference of the washing machine you’re considering rather than assuming another model’s dimensions or noise levels will apply.

Brands to consider by format

Electrolux

A useful brand to look at if width is the main concern and you’re considering a top-loader: Electrolux France lists the EW6T4127AS at 890 × 400 × 600 mm, with a 7 kg capacity.

  • The EW6T4127AS product page specifies top loading and a spin speed of 1 200 tr/min.
  • For this model, as with any top-loader, check the instructions for the clearance needed to open the lid.

Bosch

An example of a standard front-loader to compare with your measurements: Bosch France lists the WGE03207FR at 848 × 598 × 588 mm, with an 8 kg capacity.

  • The published dimensions and capacity can help you decide whether this model is worth considering for your space.
  • You should also consult the WGE03207FR instructions for door clearance, installation and connections.

Whirlpool

A brand worth exploring for top-loading models in its French range; compare the specifications of the exact model you’re interested in.

  • Whirlpool France has a dedicated top-loading washing machine category, including models listed with a 6 or 7 kg capacity.
  • Some old product pages are still available, even though the model is no longer in the catalogue.

Candy

A brand to consider if you want to compare a narrow top-loader with a slim front-loader: Candy France lists the top-loading TCA474TM5-S at 405 × 600 × 860 mm and gives depths of 33 to 46 cm for its slim or compact front-loaders, depending on the model.

  • These two formats let you assess a width constraint and a depth constraint separately.
  • The dimensions of a top-loader don’t apply to a slim front-loader, or vice versa; check each model’s reference and clearance requirements.

Top-loading washing machines to consider

These two top-loading models are worth considering if width is your main constraint. Their inclusion here doesn’t guarantee they’ll fit your recess: also measure the depth and allow for the lid and connections.

Candy TCA464TM4-S ProWash 500 top-loading washing machine

Candy TCA464TM4-S ProWash 500, 6 kg top-loader

Worth considering if top loading works better for the space you have. The product page lists a spin speed of 1 400 tr/min, a B rating and 17 programmes. Check the instructions for the depth, lid clearance and space for connections.

Haier T Series 7 THASN276TM6-S, 7 kg top-loader

Worth considering if you’re looking for a top-loading model with a stated capacity of 7 kg. The product page lists 1 200 tr/min and an A rating; compare the full dimensions and installation clearances with your available space.

Frequently asked questions

Will a top-loading washing machine fit any narrow space?

No. A top-loader mainly reduces the width required. The Electrolux and Candy models mentioned above are around 40 cm wide but 60 cm deep. You’ll also need room to open the lid and connect the appliance.

Is a slim front-loader enough if the walkway is shallow?

Not necessarily. The stated cabinet depth doesn’t account for all the space needed to use the appliance. Check the instructions for the clearance required for connections and to open the door before settling on a model.

Can I install the washing machine in a bathroom cupboard?

It depends on the cupboard’s actual position and the electrical installation; closing the doors isn’t enough to determine whether it’s suitable. Have the set-up assessed before ordering or making changes to the installation.

How can I compare noise levels during the spin cycle?

Compare the noise levels listed for the exact models and, if possible, test results produced using a comparable method. UFC-Que Choisir includes noise levels in its tests; spin speed or a single review isn’t enough to judge an entire range.

Does the durability rating matter when choosing?

Yes, as an additional factor once you’ve checked the space available and the installation requirements. For new washing machines sold in France, ADEME says that displaying a durability rating has been mandatory since April 2025; the rating takes repairability and reliability into account, among other factors.
