Who is this guide for?

Households with a narrow space

You’re replacing a machine in a bathroom or utility room where the available width, depth and opening clearance call for compromises. UFC-Que Choisir’s buying guide highlights the importance of comparing formats and overall dimensions.

Anyone fitting a machine under a worktop

You want to install or conceal your washing machine under a worktop. The height, space available, cabinet door and access to the connections will help you decide whether a freestanding or integrated model is right for you.

Households that do laundry frequently

You need a capacity that suits your usual loads and may also want to stack a tumble dryer on top. Check the capacity, available space and appliance compatibility separately, as advised by Bosch Électroménager France.

What to check before you buy

Top-loading washing machine

Consider this if: width is your main constraint and there’s room to open the lid above the machine.

Bear in mind: this type of machine won’t fit under a fixed worktop that covers the lid. The Electrolux EW6T5625AF is one example, listed by Electrolux France as 400 mm wide with a 6 kg capacity.

Standard front-loading washing machine

Consider this if: the width and depth work for your space, and the door can open without blocking the way.

Bear in mind: the depth and front-opening door may get in the way. Bosch Électroménager France lists the Bosch WAN2827UFR as measuring 598 × 845 × 590 mm (W × H × D).

Slim front-loading washing machine

Consider this if: depth is limited but there’s room for the door to open in front of the machine.

Bear in mind: “slim” doesn’t necessarily mean narrow. Candy France lists the Candy BP 48SBL6-S as 595 mm wide and 488 mm deep.

Integrated washing machine

Consider this if: you want to conceal the appliance behind a cabinet door and can check the space and door fittings.

Bear in mind: the appliance dimensions alone won’t confirm that it will fit in the space or work with the cabinet door. Whirlpool lists the BI WMWG 8146 FR as an integrated model.

What to consider What to check before you buy Who it matters most to
Access and width Measure the route and the space at their narrowest points; check that the lid or door can open. If width limits access or installation, I also check that there’s room to load the machine. Around 28% of consumers prioritise width.
Depth and front access Measure the space and the clearance around it; check the installation diagram for hoses and clearance requirements. If the machine could encroach on the walkway, I compare its depth and door opening. Around 22% of consumers prioritise depth.
Under-worktop or cabinet-door installation Compare the available dimensions with the installation diagram; check the cabinet-door fittings and access to the connections. If I’m fitting the machine in a kitchen, I want to make sure the space and cabinet door are right for the model. Around 22% of consumers prioritise an under-worktop installation.
Washing capacity Compare your usual loads with the capacity in kilograms, then check which models will fit in the space. If I do laundry often, a capacity that’s too small may not suit my usual loads. Around 17% of consumers prioritise capacity.
Washer–dryer stack Check the manuals for compatibility between the exact models of both appliances and the stacking kit. If I’m planning to put a tumble dryer on top, I check that the kit works with both appliances rather than assuming it will fit because they’re both front-loaders. Around 11% of consumers prioritise a stacked setup.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming “slim” means narrow

A shallow model may still be almost as wide as a standard front-loader. Candy France lists the Candy BP 48SBL6-S as 488 mm deep and 595 mm wide.

Check the width, height and depth of the exact model rather than relying on its name.

  • Assuming the appliance dimensions are the same as the space you need

The external measurements alone don’t confirm that the appliance will fit with its cabinet door and connections in place.

Check the installation diagram for the exact model and confirm the installation requirements before ordering.

  • Choosing a stacking kit just because both appliances are front-loaders

Kits may have depth requirements and exclude certain models. Bosch says its 00717525 kit is designed for full-size washing machines with a depth of more than 55 cm.

Check the full model numbers of the washing machine, tumble dryer and kit in the manuals or the manufacturer’s compatibility tools.

  • Choosing a smaller capacity just to save space

Capacities vary between models: the Candy Mini CW50-BP12307U1-S is listed at 5 kg, compared with 8 kg for the Candy BP 48SBL6-S.

Start with your household’s usual laundry loads, then compare the capacities of the machines that will actually fit in the space.

Brands to consider

Electrolux

Worth considering if a top-loading washing machine is the best option for your space.

  • Electrolux France lists the EW6T5625AF as 400 mm wide with a 6 kg capacity.
  • Check the height and lid clearance: the dimensions of this model don’t represent the whole range.

Candy

Offers front-loading models with different depths and capacities, including the BP 48SBL6-S and the Mini CW50-BP12307U1-S.

  • Candy France lists the BP 48SBL6-S as 595 × 488 × 880 mm with an 8 kg capacity, and the Mini as 510 × 488 × 700 mm with a 5 kg capacity.
  • Check all three dimensions and the capacity of your chosen model. “Slim” alone doesn’t confirm that it will fit in a space or under a low worktop.

Bosch

Worth considering for a standard front-loader or a stacking setup, provided the models are compatible.

  • Bosch Électroménager France lists the WAN2827UFR as measuring 598 × 845 × 590 mm.
  • The 00717525 kit is designed for full-size washing machines with a depth of more than 55 cm, and excludes certain models. Check that your exact appliances are compatible.

Whirlpool

Worth considering if your project calls for an integrated model.

  • Whirlpool France lists the BI WMWG 8146 FR as an integrated 8 kg model measuring 59.5 × 81.5 × 54.5 cm (W × H × D).
  • Check the installation diagram for the space and make sure the cabinet door is compatible: the appliance dimensions alone can’t confirm that it will fit.

Frequently asked questions

What should I measure before ordering?

Measure the width, height and depth of the space, as well as the delivery route. Check that the lid or door can open, allow room for the hoses and access to the connections, then compare everything with the installation diagram for the exact model.

Can you stack a tumble dryer on a slim front-loading washing machine?

Don’t assume so just because it’s a front-loader. Check that stacking is approved for the exact models of both appliances and that the kit is suitable. For example, Bosch says its 00717525 kit is designed for full-size washing machines with a depth of more than 55 cm, and excludes certain models.

How should I look after a washing machine in a tight space?

Follow the instructions for your model and make sure it’s installed securely and level, with no contact with the wall or other appliances and with airflow beneath the machine. Electrolux Support gives this advice for its washing machines.

What should I check about warranties and durability information?

In France, when an individual buys from a business, the legal guarantee of conformity is mandatory and separate from any commercial extended warranty, according to the Ministry of the Economy and Finance. The ministries responsible for the ecological transition state that the durability index has been progressively replacing the repairability index for washing machines since 8 April 2025.

Can you install a washing machine anywhere in a bathroom?

Don’t assume a space is suitable based on the machine’s dimensions alone. The room layout and electrical installation need to be checked for the model and property in question. Ask a qualified professional for advice rather than altering the connections yourself.
