Who is this guide for?

Households focused on long-term use

You want to look into the reliability, repairability and maintenance options for the model you choose, rather than relying on a general brand promise.

Households that need to keep the laundry going

You need a capacity that suits the amount of laundry you have, without choosing a drum that’s bigger than necessary.

Buyers who want to consider how they’ll use it

You want to compare energy and water use, noise and spin performance with how often you do your washing and where the appliance will go.

What should you check?

Whether you’re considering a front-loading or top-loading washing machine, first check the installation requirements and capacity, then compare specific models. A washer-dryer also meets a need for drying: check its energy label according to the model’s functions, rather than automatically assuming that the index for covered washing machines applies.

Criterion What to check Who this matters to
Durability and repairability For the exact model, check its durability score out of 10 and the details of the reliability and repairability criteria. If I’m already replacing my appliance, I want to understand what could affect how long it lasts. This is a priority for around 36 % of consumers.
Washing capacity Compare the capacity in kg with your usual loads and check that the appliance will fit in the space available. When I need to get the washing going again, I want a drum that suits my household’s laundry, not simply the biggest one. This comes first for around 29 % of consumers.
Water and energy Check the label for kWh per 100 cycles and litres per cycle, comparing models with capacities suited to your needs. For regular washing, I want to consider how much water and electricity the cycles use. Around 21 % of consumers make this their main criterion.
Noise and spin performance Check the spin noise level in dB and the spin-drying efficiency class. If the machine is near living areas or spin performance affects how I organise my laundry, these features could determine my choice. They’re the top priority for around 14 % of consumers.

According to the French Ministry for Ecological Transition, the durability index has applied to covered washing machines in France since 8 April 2025. ADEME says reliability and repairability each account for half of the score. It also recommends checking capacity, energy and water use, spin performance and noise. So the score doesn’t replace checking the energy label and considering the constraints of your home.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Taking the index as a guaranteed lifespan

The score brings together reliability and repairability criteria; it doesn’t predict how many years an appliance will work in your home.

Check the details of the score for the model you’ve chosen, then look separately at its capacity, energy label and warranty terms.

  • Looking only at the energy class

The class alone doesn’t show the energy and water figures for a reference cycle, or the noise level and spin performance. These details also matter for an appliance you use regularly.

Compare kWh per 100 cycles and litres per cycle across models with suitable capacities, but don’t use these figures alone to estimate your actual consumption.

  • Choosing a drum that’s too big just to be safe

A capacity that’s greater than your usual loads may lead you to run cycles with a barely filled drum. ADEME says that 7 kg is usually enough.

Start with the amount of laundry you have and choose a larger capacity only if your loads genuinely call for it.

  • Ruling out a repair before getting a diagnosis

A fault alone doesn’t mean you need to replace the appliance. The French Ministry of the Economy describes a repair bonus for certain appliances that are out of warranty and repaired by a certified professional, subject to conditions.

Get a diagnosis and check whether your appliance is eligible before deciding between repair and replacement.

Brands to know when comparing models

Bosch

In France, Bosch offers front-loading washing machines and provides information about their durability index.

  • Bosch’s French website lets you check the scores shown for some front-loading models.
  • A score shown for one model doesn’t apply to the whole range: check the model number and the details of its index.

Haier

Haier offers washing machines and washer-dryers in France.

  • The brand describes its in-house durability tests and distinguishes them from information specific to each appliance.
  • Haier says these tests don’t guarantee how long an appliance will work: installation, use and maintenance can all make a difference.

Miele

In France, Miele offers front-loading W1 washing machines, among other models.

  • Miele’s product page for the WCA120 WCS lists an 8 kg capacity, a spin speed of 1 400 tr/min and energy-label information for this model.
  • These features don’t describe every Miele model, and any lifespan mentioned in the manufacturer’s marketing isn’t an individual guarantee.

Frequently asked questions

How can I check the durability index for a specific washing machine?

In France, check the score out of 10 shown for the exact model, then look at the details of the criteria used to calculate it. The guidance from the French Ministry for Ecological Transition says these details must be made available; don’t use the score for a similar model instead.

Since when has the index applied to washing machines?

According to the French Ministry for Ecological Transition, the durability index has gradually replaced the repairability index for covered washing machines in France since 8 April 2025. Check which information applies to the model you’re considering.

Does the durability score measure only repairability?

No. According to ADEME, reliability and repairability each account for 50 % of the final score. The breakdown lets you look beyond the overall score and check the criteria that matter for a particular model.

Does a faulty washing machine always need replacing?

No: a diagnosis could help you consider a repair before buying another appliance. The French Ministry of the Economy says the repair bonus may apply subject to conditions, including having the appliance repaired by a certified professional and the product no longer being covered by a warranty. Check whether the fault and appliance are eligible.

What should I compare on the energy label?

ADEME recommends checking capacity, energy use in kWh per 100 cycles, water use in litres per cycle, spin performance and noise. Start with the amount of laundry you have: ADEME says a 7 kg capacity is usually enough, but this is only a guide and may not suit your actual needs.
