Who is this choice for ?

Anyone bothered by the spin cycle

If the machine is in a living space or close to neighbours, compare the stated noise level for the exact model, and don’t confuse it with vibrations transmitted through the floor. Washing machine labels include noise data, according to the European Commission.

Anyone whose floor or machine vibrates

Correct installation matters too: Bosch recommends checking that the machine is level and that its feet are firmly supported. You could consider anti-vibration pads, but only if they’re suitable for both the appliance and the floor.

Anyone with a narrow space

Measure the space, delivery route and clearance needed to open the machine before choosing a format. A slimline model is only suitable if it can also be connected and used where you plan to put it.

What should you check before buying ?

When comparing washing machines, the European Commission recommends checking the label data, including noise, energy use per 100 cycles and water use per cycle. Then compare these with the dimensions and installation options available in your home.

What matters What to check Who this matters most to
Spin-cycle noise Noise emissions and spin-cycle noise class for the exact model; check the capacity and spin-drying efficiency shown on the same label. If the spin cycle reverberates through my living space, I compare the noise data before choosing. Around 40 % of consumers prioritise the stated noise level.
Stability and vibrations Check the floor and support under all four feet, remove the transit bolts and adjust the machine according to the instructions; check that any pads are compatible. Bosch treats these installation checks separately from the product specifications. If the machine moves or bangs, I want to check the installation before adding an accessory. Around 30 % of consumers prioritise a stable installation.
Space and access Width, height, depth, delivery access, opening clearance and the space needed for connections. If my space or access route is narrow, I also check that there’s room to open the lid and reach the connections. Around 20 % of consumers put size at the top of their list of priorities.
Energy and water Energy rating, kWh per 100 cycles and litres per cycle; check the capacity and reference programme associated with these figures. If I want to compare running costs across models, I look at the label figures on the same basis rather than estimating my bill from a single number. Around 10 % of consumers prioritise energy and water use.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming “quiet” means peace and quiet

A marketing claim or motor feature alone doesn’t tell you how noisy the spin cycle will be or how much vibration will travel through your home.

Compare the noise data for the exact model, then check that it can be installed securely. Make sure any efficiency claims are attributed to the manufacturer.

  • Choosing based on width alone

An appliance might fit in the space but still leave too little room to open the lid, connect it or get it through to the room.

Measure the delivery route and installation space, then check the model’s instructions for the clearance required.

  • Comparing labels from different generations

The current A to G scale has applied to washing machines since 1 March 2021. Figures from older labels aren’t necessarily based on the same criteria.

Compare the product information for each model using the current figures, including kWh per 100 cycles and litres per cycle.

Brands and models to consider

Bosch

Its front-loading models and installation guides can help you compare a specific model and plan how to install it.

  • Bosch lists the WAN28258FR as having an 8 kg capacity and a spin-cycle noise level of 72 dB(A); these specifications apply to this specific model.
  • Bosch lists this model as unavailable. Its specifications don’t describe the whole range or confirm current availability.

Whirlpool

Its top-loading models are worth considering when width is a key factor.

  • Whirlpool states that the TDLR6261BFR is 40 cm wide and has a 6 kg capacity.
  • The manufacturer describes its motor as quiet, but this claim is no substitute for comparing the noise data for the model.

LG

LG front-loading models can be compared individually using their specifications and product information sheets.

  • LG describes the F84B15WHS as an 8 kg, A-rated model with a Direct Drive motor.
  • The manufacturer’s claims about quiet operation and reduced vibration don’t provide a comparative measurement here.

Samsung

Samsung model information sheets let you check the dimensions and specifications of the model you’re considering.

  • Samsung’s documentation lists the WW90DG6U85LB family as a range of 9 kg washing machines.
  • Information about the range alone isn’t enough to establish the spin-cycle noise level, whether it will fit your space or whether a specific variant is available.

Electrolux

Its installation accessories can be considered separately from your choice of appliance.

  • Electrolux states that the E4WHPA02 set includes four pads, each 45 mm in diameter and 6 mm high.
  • The claimed noise reduction comes from the manufacturer; check that the machine is stable, consider the type of floor and make sure the pads are compatible with the appliance.

Frequently asked questions

What should you compare on a washing machine’s energy label ?

For noise, check the sound emissions and noise class during the spin cycle. To compare consumption, look at the energy rating, kWh per 100 cycles and water use per cycle, taking into account the capacity and duration of the reference programme. The European Commission states that the current A to G scale has applied since 1 March 2021, so don’t confuse it with the old A+++ rating.

What should you check before using the machine for the first time ?

Follow the model’s instructions: remove the transit bolts, adjust and secure the feet, then check that all four feet are firmly supported on a suitable floor. Also measure the appliance and its delivery route, and check the clearance needed for connections and opening the door or lid.

Do anti-vibration pads mean you don’t need to adjust the feet ?

No. Electrolux claims its E4WHPA02 pads reduce noise, but Bosch separately recommends removing the transit bolts and levelling the appliance. Check that the pads are compatible and that the machine is stable once they’re fitted.

Is it OK to run a noisy wash before 10 pm ?

There’s no general permission to make noise until 10 pm. According to Service Public, in France, noise from a household appliance can be considered an abnormal neighbourhood disturbance by day or night, depending on factors such as its intensity, duration, frequency and context. The time or the decibel level stated on the appliance isn’t enough on its own to decide an individual case.
