Who is this guide for?

People living in a flat where the machine is near the living room

If you can hear the spin cycle from your living space, compare the dB levels and noise emission classes of the models you’re considering. Also check whether your floor will provide a stable base: according to Bosch Electroménager France, a washing machine that isn’t level can make low-pitched noises and bang.

People with an open-plan kitchen or a nearby bedroom

When there are few doors between the machine and the areas where you talk or relax, pay particular attention to its stated spin-cycle noise level. A good noise emission class doesn’t mean you can skip checking the location and levelling.

Buyers who also care about how long their machine will last

Noise isn’t the only factor to compare. In France, the Ministry for the Ecological Transition states that the durability index has applied to washing machines since 8 April 2025. Check the index for the model you’re considering, along with its warranty and repair terms.

Which criteria should you compare?

Start with the label for the exact model, then compare its figures with the space available and how the machine can be installed.

CriteriaWhat to checkFor my needs
Spin-cycle noise Compare the dB level and noise emission class for the exact model. Electromenager Compare explains that classes A to D are based on noise measured during the spin cycle of the Eco 40-60 programme at full load, so use this same basis for comparison. In an open-plan kitchen or near a bedroom, I want to compare machines using more than just the word ‘quiet’.
Installation stability Check the instructions, the type of flooring and whether you can level the appliance. Bosch Electroménager France notes that an unlevel machine can bang, particularly during a fast spin cycle. If my floor or walls carry vibrations, the figure on the label won’t be enough to tell me how noisy the machine will sound in my home.
Size and capacity Check the dimensions of the model, measure the space and the required clearances, then choose a capacity that suits the amount of laundry you wash. The machine needs to fit in its space without a difficult installation; I wouldn’t choose a capacity just to get a particular noise emission class.
Durability Check the durability index for the model, along with the warranty terms, repair options and availability of parts. In France, the Ministry for the Ecological Transition states that the index has applied to washing machines since 8 April 2025. I want to take potential lifespan into account without treating a brand’s longevity claim as a verified feature of every model.
Washing and spinning Also check the spin efficiency class and programme features. UFC-Que Choisir’s testing protocol assesses washing, rinsing, spinning and noise separately, so no single figure sums up all these results. A quiet spin cycle matters to me, but I also want to compare the washing functions and spin results.

Which pitfalls should you avoid?

  • Relying on the word ‘quiet’ alone

On its own, this term doesn’t tell you how much noise the machine is stated to make during the spin cycle. Two models described this way can have different noise figures.

Compare the class and dB figures on the label for the exact model, using the same measurement basis.

  • Overlooking levelling after choosing your machine

According to Bosch Electroménager France, a machine that isn’t level can bang, particularly during a fast spin cycle.

Before using it, follow the installation instructions and make sure the appliance is standing firmly on a suitable surface.

  • Assuming anti-vibration technology guarantees a particular result

A brand’s claimed technology alone can’t predict how noisy the machine will sound in an open-plan kitchen or a nearby bedroom.

Check the full model number, then compare its noise figures with the installation conditions available in your home.

  • Assuming a motor warranty proves the machine is durable

A warranty covering one component doesn’t, by itself, tell you how durable the whole machine is or how easy it is to repair.

Check the model’s durability index and read exactly what the warranty and repair service cover.

A few brands to consider

These examples refer to specific models or brand claims; they aren’t representative of every model in each range.

Whirlpool

The Supreme Silence range is worth including when comparing front-loading washing machines if spin-cycle noise is a priority.

  • Whirlpool France states that the W7X 89E SILENCE FR model produces 65 dB during the spin cycle.
  • This figure applies to this model, not all Whirlpool washing machines. Check its noise emission class, dimensions and durability index before deciding.

Miele

The WCH870 WCS is an example of a model with noise data you can compare with other machines suited to your space.

  • Miele France’s product information for the WCH870 WCS gives it a noise emission class of A and a spin-cycle noise level of 67 dB.
  • Miele says that it tests most of its series for a lifespan of up to 20 years. This brand claim doesn’t replace checking the model’s durability index or reading the warranty terms.

Bosch

Bosch’s installation guidance is useful when considering how the surface and levelling may affect your choice of machine.

  • Bosch describes its AntiVibration design as a way to reduce noise during the spin cycle and notes that an unlevel machine can bang.
  • Check whether the model you’re considering has this design, then compare its dB level and noise emission class: the name of a technology doesn’t tell you how it will perform in your home.

Washing machines available on Joybuy

These two 10 kg washing machines are worth considering for a flat. Compare the noise figures for each with how close the machine will be to your living space, then check that the available space allows for a stable installation. Their inclusion here doesn’t replace comparing the labels of the models you’re considering.

Haier X Series 11 HW100-BD14397PGU1 washing machine

Haier X Series 11 HW100-BD14397PGU1, 10 kg, 1 400 tr/min

If you’re installing it near the living room or a bedroom, compare this model’s noise emission class and spin-cycle dB level with those of the other machines you’re considering. The product name gives its capacity as 10 kg and its speed as 1 400 tr/min; also check the dimensions, the stability of the surface and the model’s durability index.

Electrolux EWF1410N2 washing machine

Electrolux EWF1410N2, 10 kg

If a door or hallway separates the machine from noise-sensitive rooms, check this model’s noise figures before deciding whether it suits the space. Its stated capacity is 10 kg; also check its dimensions, whether it can be levelled properly and its durability index.

Frequently asked questions

What should I check on the label for an open-plan kitchen?

Compare the spin-cycle noise level in dB and the noise emission class for the exact model. Electromenager Compare explains that noise classes are based on the spin cycle of the Eco 40-60 programme at full load. This shared basis helps you compare appliances, but it can’t predict every sound you’ll hear at home.

Does a noise emission class of A guarantee that you won’t hear the machine?

No. It tells you about the noise emissions stated under the measurement conditions, not how sound will travel through every home. According to Bosch Electroménager France, a machine that isn’t level can also bang during a fast spin cycle.

What should I check to reduce vibrations after delivery?

Follow the installation instructions for the model you’ve bought and make sure the machine is stable and properly level before using it. Bosch Electroménager France links low-pitched noises and banging, in particular, to incorrect levelling.

Should I check the durability index as well as the noise level?

Yes, if lifespan matters to you. In France, the Ministry for the Ecological Transition states that the durability index has applied to washing machines since 8 April 2025. Compare the index for the exact model rather than basing your judgement on the brand’s reputation.

Is the maximum spin speed enough to make a choice?

No. It doesn’t replace the stated spin-cycle dB level or the noise emission class. UFC-Que Choisir’s testing protocol assesses washing, rinsing, spinning and noise separately, so compare the features that matter for your needs.
