Who is this guide for?

Close neighbours, noise is a priority

If your main concern is minimising noise disturbance, compare the stated noise level during the spin cycle and check your building’s rules on when you can use your washing machine. A good noise rating doesn’t mean the appliance will be inaudible to your neighbours or that you can use it at any time. The French Ministry of the Interior notes that permitted hours depend on local rules and the building’s co-ownership regulations.

Floors sensitive to vibration

If you’re concerned about vibrations travelling through the floor, first check that the appliance is properly prepared, supported and level. Samsung’s instructions highlight the importance of correct installation; an accessory is no substitute for these checks.

Limited space, drying clothes indoors

If you need to balance compact dimensions with drying your clothes indoors, check the capacity, full depth and spin-drying efficiency rating. ADEME recommends choosing an A-rated spin-drying efficiency class if you need your clothes to dry quickly indoors or in a tumble dryer.

What should you compare before buying?

In a flat, weigh the noise level during the spin cycle, stability, indoor drying needs, available space and running costs against the constraints of your home.

Noise and spin cycle

Choose this if: quiet operation or drying clothes indoors matters to you. Compare the decibel rating during the spin cycle, the noise rating and the spin-drying efficiency class separately.

Keep in mind: these figures don’t measure how much noise reaches a neighbouring flat, and they don’t override your building’s rules.

Compact size

Choose this if: limited width, height or depth restricts your options. Start by checking the full dimensions and choosing a capacity that suits your usual loads.

Keep in mind: a smaller appliance isn’t automatically quieter, and its capacity may not suit every load.

Additional stabilisation

Consider this if: you’ve followed the installation instructions and any additional product is compatible with the appliance and its location.

Keep in mind: Electro Dépôt claims its anti-vibration mat is effective, while Samsung warns against soft supports. This marketing claim doesn’t guarantee the same result in your home.

Feature What to check Who it matters most to
Noise during the spin cycle Compare decibel ratings for the same cycle stage and the noise rating; also check whether you can schedule cycles and what rules apply in your home. If I want to avoid a spin cycle running at an inconvenient time, I compare the stated noise level and the options for scheduling a cycle. Around 28% of consumers put noise and managing their washing at the top of their priorities.
Stability and vibration Check the floor surface, levelling, feet and whether any accessory is compatible with the appliance’s instructions. If my floor easily transmits vibrations, I want to start with a stable installation rather than relying solely on an accessory. Around 28% of consumers prioritise stability and minimising vibrations through the floor.
Spin cycle and indoor drying Compare the spin-drying efficiency class and available speeds for the exact model; they aren’t interchangeable. When I dry clothes at home, I look at the spin-drying efficiency class as well as the maximum spin speed. Around 17% of consumers prioritise the spin cycle before drying clothes indoors.
Size and capacity Measure the width, height, full depth and clearance needed for the door, then compare these with your usual load size. If space is limited, I check the actual dimensions and make sure the capacity suits my washing needs. Around 16% of consumers prioritise finding a model that fits a smaller space.
Energy use and lifespan Compare kWh per 100 cycles on the same basis, the durability index and the warranty terms. In France, the durability index has applied to the relevant washing machines since 8 April 2025. For an appliance I use regularly, I consider the reference energy-use figures and durability information, without confusing them with noise or spin performance. Around 11% of consumers prioritise running costs and lifespan.

Mistakes to avoid when choosing and installing

  • Relying on a mat to make up for an unstable installation

A claim that a mat absorbs vibrations is no substitute for preparing the floor or levelling the appliance.

Follow the installation instructions first. Only add an accessory if the manufacturer allows it and it’s suitable for the location.

An accessory may add to the cost and affect the installation height.

  • Choosing a model based only on its maximum spin speed

Maximum spin speed and spin-drying efficiency class tell you different things, particularly if you need to dry clothes indoors.

For the exact model, compare the spin-drying efficiency class and the stated noise level during that part of the cycle.

  • Measuring only the washing machine’s body

The door and any parts that protrude can increase the depth needed for installation.

Check the full dimensions and the door-opening clearance published for your chosen model.

Underestimating the space needed may mean rearranging the area or changing your delivery arrangements.

  • Assuming a quiet appliance can be used at any time

Local and building rules still apply, regardless of the stated noise level.

Check the rules that apply before scheduling your washes; the French Ministry of the Interior notes that there are no set hours that apply across the whole of France.

Brands and models to consider

Bosch

The WGG244FSFR is a 9 kg model with published figures that help you assess noise, spin performance and energy use separately.

  • Darty lists 71 dB, a noise rating of A, a spin-drying efficiency rating of B and 49 kWh per 100 cycles for this model.
  • These figures from the product listing don’t measure noise transmitted to neighbours and don’t apply to the entire Bosch range.

LG

The F14R31WHSA is an 11 kg model listed with a 68 L drum, worth considering if you need a large capacity.

  • LG lists a depth of 565 mm for the body and 620 mm overall, which can help you plan the space.
  • Check the full depth and door clearance against your available space. The manufacturer’s “Triple A” label doesn’t prove that the machine won’t vibrate in a flat.

Candy

The Mini ProWash 700 CW50-BP12307U1-S is a compact option if a 5 kg capacity suits your usual washing loads.

  • Candy lists dimensions of 510 × 488 × 700 mm and an energy rating of A for this model.
  • Make sure the smaller capacity suits your usual loads; the energy rating alone doesn’t tell you how quiet the appliance will be.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a nationwide schedule that allows you to do your washing at any time in a flat?

No, there are no set hours that apply across the whole of France. The French Ministry of the Interior says that rules may depend on local authority by-laws and the building’s co-ownership regulations, so check which rules apply to your home.

Does an A rating on the label mean the washing machine is economical, quiet and good at spinning?

No, these figures describe different features. Check the energy rating, noise rating and spin-drying efficiency class separately on the label for the exact model.

What should I check when installing a washing machine?

Follow the instructions for your model when removing the transit bolts and levelling the machine. Samsung’s instructions specifically say to remove the transit bolts and check that all four feet are firmly on the floor; instructions may vary by appliance.

Is the stated depth enough to plan the space?

Not always. Check the full dimensions and the clearance needed to open the door. For the LG F14R31WHSA, LG lists a body depth of 565 mm, an overall depth of 620 mm and a depth of 1 100 mm with the door open to 90°.

Do the energy figures on the label apply to every wash I do?

No, read them against their stated reference basis, particularly the kWh per 100 cycles figure. The European Commission explains that energy-use and duration requirements relate to the Eco 40-60 programme; they don’t tell you the exact cost of every programme you use at home.
