Who is this advice for?

Families with back-to-back washes

If you regularly have full laundry baskets, compare 8 to 9 kg and 10 to 12 kg models based on the size of your usual loads. UFC-Que Choisir recommends considering how often you do laundry, rather than just the number of people in your household.

Households that regularly wash duvets and blankets

Bulky items may call for a larger capacity, as UFC-Que Choisir points out. Also check the load limit for the programme designed for these items, and make sure you have enough room to install the machine.

Families alternating between large and small loads

If you sometimes wash bedding and sometimes just a few sorted items, look for load-adjustment features listed for the specific model. Also compare the energy consumption figures on its energy label, rather than assuming this feature works in the same way on every machine.

What should you check?

Start with the loads you wash most often, then compare your chosen capacity with the programmes, energy label and available space.

What to considerWhat to checkWhat I need
Capacity According to UFC-Que Choisir, 8 to 9 kg is generally enough for three or four people; 10 to 12 kg may be more suitable if you regularly have full loads to get through. Also check the maximum load for the programmes you use. Do I often wash full baskets, or just bulky items from time to time? How often you actually wash large loads will help guide your choice.
Consumption and load size Compare the kWh per 100 cycles and water use per cycle on the energy label. If you’re relying on load adjustment, check what the model adjusts and which programmes it applies to. I also do smaller washes between the big loads, so I want to compare the stated consumption figures without relying on drum size alone.
Installation and noise Measure the width, height and depth, the delivery route and the clearance needed with the door open. Check the spin-cycle noise level on the energy label, as recommended by ADEME. The machine needs to fit through to its intended spot and be easy to load, especially if it’s near a living area.
Durability For a washing machine sold in France, check the durability index for the exact model. The French ministries responsible for the ecological transition say it has been gradually replacing the repairability index for this category since 8 April 2025. Check the terms of any commercial warranty separately. I’ll use my washing machine frequently, so I want to look at its durability information and find out exactly what any extended warranty covers.

What mistakes should you avoid?

  • Choosing 12 kg or more just because of your household size

A large drum is most useful for genuinely bulky loads that you wash frequently. UFC-Que Choisir distinguishes between the usual needs of a three- or four-person household and those of a family that regularly has full loads to get through.

Think about the loads you typically wash before choosing. If you only wash thick duvets occasionally, consider a more moderate capacity too.

  • Assuming the stated capacity applies to every programme

The rated capacity alone doesn’t tell you how much laundry you can put in on the cycles you use, particularly for certain types of fabric.

Check the model’s load chart for the programmes you’ll use for bedding, synthetics or woollens.

  • Measuring the space but not the access route or door clearance

A machine may fit in the space you’ve set aside but still leave too little room to open the door or reach the connections.

Measure the space and delivery route, then check the dimensions with the door open and the clearance needed to install the model.

  • Confusing a commercial warranty with overall durability

A warranty covering the motor doesn’t, by itself, tell you how durable the whole machine is. It’s separate from your statutory guarantee.

Check the durability index for the model sold in France and the exact scope of the commercial warranty. Keep your proof of purchase so you can exercise your rights with the retailer if needed.

Some brands to consider

These examples relate to specific models; the features of one model don’t necessarily apply to the whole brand.

LG

The F14R31WHSA is an 11 kg front-loading model worth considering if you regularly wash bulky items.

  • LG France lists a Duvet programme, load detection and dimensions of 600 × 850 × 565 mm for this model.
  • Also measure the clearance needed in front of the door: the dimensions of the closed appliance don’t tell you how much room you’ll need to use it.

Samsung

The WW11BGA046AE has a stated capacity of 11 kg in a front-loading design, so check that it will fit your space.

  • Samsung France lists dimensions of 600 × 850 × 600 mm for this model.
  • Check the delivery route and the space needed with the door open before choosing this model.

Bosch

The WGH254A0FR is a 10 kg front-loading model with a stated spin speed of 1 400 rpm, according to Bosch Électroménager France.

  • Bosch lists a 10-year motor warranty and a 3-year commercial warranty for this model, subject to their respective terms.
  • These warranties don’t measure the appliance’s overall durability and don’t replace your statutory guarantee from the retailer.

Electrolux

The EW6FI4130SA is a 10 kg front-loading model to consider if you alternate between different load sizes.

  • According to Electrolux France, its SensiCare feature adjusts the time, water and energy use to the weight of the load.
  • This manufacturer’s description alone can’t predict how much energy and water your washes will use, or prove an advantage over other models. Compare the energy label.

Frequently asked questions

What capacity should I choose if I regularly have family loads to get through?

According to UFC-Que Choisir, 8 to 9 kg is generally enough for a household of three or four, while 10 to 12 kg may be more suitable if you regularly have full loads to get through. If you often wash duvets and blankets, also check the load limit for the programme designed for them.

Does a very large capacity necessarily mean lower energy and water use?

No. Capacity alone doesn’t tell you how much a machine will use in your own circumstances. ADEME recommends choosing a model that meets your needs. Then compare the kWh per 100 cycles and water use per cycle on the energy label, as well as the load-adjustment features available on that specific model.

What should I measure before ordering a front-loading machine?

Measure the space it will go in and the whole delivery route, then check the width, height, depth and clearance needed with the door open for the exact model. Make sure there’s also enough access to the connections: the depth of the machine with the door closed doesn’t tell you how much room you’ll need to use it.

Which index should I check for the durability of a washing machine sold in France?

Check the durability index for the exact model. According to the French ministries responsible for the ecological transition, it has been gradually replacing the repairability index for washing machines since 8 April 2025. Don’t confuse it with the length of a commercial warranty.

Does a motor warranty replace the statutory guarantee?

No. In France, the statutory guarantee of conformity provided by the retailer is separate from a limited commercial warranty, such as one covering only the motor. The Directorate General for Competition, Consumer Affairs and Fraud Control says consumers have two years to claim under the statutory guarantee for a new product and don’t have to prove during that period that the fault existed on the day of purchase.
