Buying priorities
Measure the usable space before comparing programmes or capacity : width, depth, opening and connections determine which configurations are possible in the first place.
| Priority |
What to check |
Your needs |
| Actual footprint |
Compare the chassis width and depth with the available space. Also allow room for hoses, the door or lid opening and access to the filter. |
I want to keep the walkway clear and be able to load the laundry without blocking a neighbouring unit or worktop. |
| Suitable capacity |
Relate the kg capacity to your usual loads and check the capacity for each programme in the manual. Que Choisir generally recommends 5 to 7 kg for one person or a couple, and 8 to 10 kg for a family with children or bulky laundry. |
My washing loads should match the amount of laundry I actually have, without choosing an oversized appliance simply on principle. |
| Bathroom installation |
Check the position in relation to the shower or bath, the electrical zones and the circuit provided. Promotelec specifically reminds users that 30 mA residual-current protection should be used for bathroom circuits. |
Before ordering, I want to know whether the location complies with the electrical regulations applicable to my home. |
| Drying without a second floor-standing appliance |
For a stack, check both model numbers, the approved kit, the base depth and the available height. For the Bosch WTZ20410 kit, Bosch specifies a standard washing machine more than 55 cm deep, subject to compatibility. |
I want to wash and dry without doubling the floor space required, while keeping the installation stable and accessible. |
| Use after installation |
Once the format has been confirmed, compare the energy label on a like-for-like basis and the spin noise level. ADEME presents the energy label as a useful reference for comparing appliances. |
If several models fit in the room, I want to choose between them based on energy use, noise and ease of maintenance. |

Frequently asked questions
Is a top-loading washing machine always the right choice for a narrow utility room ?
No. A top-loader is particularly useful when width is limited : Electrolux France gives a width of 400 mm for one top-loading example. If depth is what encroaches on the passage, a slim front-loader may be more suitable. In either case, measure the opening, hoses and access for maintenance.
Can I install a washing machine in a bathroom in France ?
That depends on its exact position in relation to the shower or bath and on the electrical installation. Promotelec points out that NF C 15-100 defines protection zones and specifically requires 30 mA residual-current protection for bathroom circuits. If the proposed installation is unclear, have it checked by a qualified professional.
Can I put a tumble dryer on top of any front-loading washing machine ?
No. For its WTZ20410 kit, Bosch specifies a standard-sized washing machine with a depth of more than 55 cm and requires compatibility with the tumble dryer to be checked. Two appliances with the same width or from the same brand are not automatically compatible.
Is the depth shown on a product listing enough to know whether the washing machine will fit ?
No. Depth is a useful first filter, but you must also allow for hoses, the door or lid opening, access to the taps and socket, a level floor and the installation instructions for the exact model.
What capacity should I choose for a small home ?
Choose according to the amount of laundry you actually wash rather than the size of your home. Que Choisir generally recommends 5 to 7 kg for one person or a couple, and 8 to 10 kg for a family with children or bulky items. Also check the permitted load for each programme.
