Which option is right for you?

If you have a narrow room

You may have floor space for a stack, but not for two appliances side by side. Check the available height too, along with the floor’s stability, connections and the clearance needed around the appliances.

If you’re keeping an existing appliance

If you’re only replacing the washing machine or tumble dryer, note down the model numbers of both appliances before choosing the replacement and the kit. Similar widths alone aren’t enough to confirm compatibility.

If there’s no room for a stack

If the height or access in your room makes it impossible to install two separate appliances, a washer-dryer could be a practical alternative. However, according to UFC-Que Choisir, its drying capacity is lower than its washing capacity.

What should you check before choosing?

Stacking kit for specific models

Consider this: when the manufacturer confirms that the kit is compatible with the exact model numbers of both appliances.

Bear in mind: a kit may be designed for specific series or depths, even within the same brand.

Universal stacking kit

Consider this: if both appliances fall within the kit’s specified dimensions and their instruction manuals allow this installation.

Bear in mind: the word ‘universal’ doesn’t guarantee compatibility with every combination of appliances.

Washer-dryer

Consider this: if your room can’t accommodate a stack of two appliances with enough access around them.

Bear in mind: according to UFC-Que Choisir, drying capacity is lower than washing capacity, and drying generally takes longer than with a separate tumble dryer.

Criterion What to check Who it matters to
Stability and compatibility Check both instruction manuals for confirmation that stacking is allowed and for any restrictions. Compare the appliances’ model numbers and dimensions with the kit’s specifications. I’m keeping one appliance and want to know whether the new model can be stacked securely on top of it. Around 37% of consumers rank this compatibility as their top priority.
Space and connections Measure the space and check that the doors can open. Allow for the clearances, ventilation and access to connections specified in the instruction manuals. In a small bathroom, I need to be able to fit and connect the stack without blocking access. This is the top priority for around 27% of consumers.
Everyday use Consider the height of the controls and access to the doors, tank and filters. If the kit has a shelf, check there’s room to use it when it’s pulled out. A stack may fit in my utility room but leave the tumble dryer too high for me to use and maintain easily. Around 18% of consumers prioritise easy everyday access.
Room for two appliances If a stack isn’t suitable, compare the washing and drying capacities of the same washer-dryer, as well as its depth. If there isn’t enough height or access for two appliances, I’m looking for a way to wash and dry with just one. This is the main constraint for around 18% of consumers.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Taking the word ‘universal’ at face value

Stated dimensions vary between kits. Whirlpool describes the Wpro SKS101 as suitable for standard 60 × 60 cm appliances, while the Joybuy listing for the Wpro SKN101 gives a depth range of 45 to 60 cm. These measurements don’t replace the instructions in your appliances’ manuals.

Before ordering, compare the width, depth and shape of the washing machine’s top, as well as both appliances’ model numbers, with the kit listing and the two instruction manuals.

  • Putting the washing machine on top or ignoring the floor

The washing machine must form the base, with the tumble dryer on top. UFC-Que Choisir notes that an unstable floor can increase vibration and damage the appliances.

Make sure the floor is flat, rigid and sturdy, then check that the washing machine is level before assembling the stack with the appropriate kit.

  • Forgetting about access once the stack is assembled

A stack frees up floor space, but the tumble dryer’s control panel, filters or tank may be difficult to reach. A pull-out shelf also needs space in front of the appliances.

Before buying, check that the doors can open and note the height of the controls, as well as the access needed for connections and maintenance.

  • Assuming washing and drying capacities are the same

With a washer-dryer, a load that fits the washing capacity may exceed the drying capacity and need to be split. UFC-Que Choisir also points out that drying cycles are generally longer than with a separate tumble dryer.

Compare the washing and drying capacities of the model you’re considering. If you want to wash and dry a load in one go, use the drying capacity as your guide.

Brands to consider for stacking kits

These ranges are a helpful starting point when checking a kit against your appliance model numbers. The brand name alone doesn’t confirm that your appliances can be stacked together.

Bosch

Bosch offers stacking kits for washing machines and tumble dryers, including versions with a shelf.

  • Bosch lets you check a kit’s compatibility using the appliance’s E-Nr. model number.
  • The kit must be suitable for the tumble dryer. Some kit models also require a minimum depth or exclude specific appliances.

Electrolux

Electrolux offers kits for its front-loading appliances, including versions with a shelf.

  • Electrolux says the E1WYHSK2 kit fits its front-loading appliances with a depth of 52 to 67 cm. You can check compatibility using the PNC.
  • This stated range for Electrolux appliances doesn’t confirm that the kit is suitable for appliances from another brand.

Samsung

Samsung specifies which washing machine and tumble dryer ranges its stacking kits are designed for.

  • Samsung publishes a list of compatible appliance models for its SKK-SSW kit.
  • A kit’s compatibility list doesn’t automatically cover other generations or formats from the same brand.

Miele

Miele offers stacking kits for some washing machine and tumble dryer series, with versions that include a drawer or shelf.

  • Miele specifies that the WTV 511 stacking kit is designed for Chrome Edition T1 and T1 Classic tumble dryers.
  • Some washing machine series are excluded, so you’ll still need to check the exact model numbers.

Wpro

Wpro offers strap kits for stacking a tumble dryer on top of a washing machine.

  • Whirlpool describes the Wpro SKS101 as suitable for standard 60 × 60 cm appliances. The Joybuy listing for the SKN101 gives a depth range of 45 to 60 cm.
  • Specifications vary between kit models and need to be checked against the dimensions and instruction manuals of both appliances.

Frequently asked questions

Can you put any tumble dryer on top of any washing machine?

No. For a stack, both appliances must be front-loading, have similar dimensions and be approved for stacking in their instruction manuals. The tumble dryer goes on top, secured with a compatible kit. Bosch, for example, asks you to check the E-Nr. model number for its kits.

Do you need a stacking kit?

A stack needs a securing system that’s suitable for the configuration approved for your appliances. A kit made for specific models may be limited to certain model numbers, while a so-called universal kit still has dimensional limits. In either case, check the instruction manuals before buying.

How can you keep a stack accessible and properly ventilated?

Follow the clearance requirements in the instruction manuals for both appliances. UFC-Que Choisir recommends leaving a gap between the stack and the wall to maintain ventilation. Also check that you can open the doors and reach the controls and parts that need maintaining.

Can a washer-dryer replace a stack?

Yes, if your room can’t accommodate two separate appliances, but you’ll need to adjust the load for drying. UFC-Que Choisir says a washer-dryer’s drying capacity is lower than its washing capacity, and drying generally takes longer than with a separate tumble dryer.
