What to prioritise in a studio flat
A front-loading machine needs space in front of the door, while a top-loading machine needs clear space above it. If you’re choosing a washing machine for a studio flat or small apartment, start with the things that determine whether it can be installed and used day to day, then consider noise and energy and water use.
| What matters |
What to check |
What consumers say |
| Space and access |
Overall dimensions, delivery route and clearance in front of the door or above the lid; location of the connections. |
If the machine gets in the way, I want to be able to move around and load my laundry without rearranging the room; around 45% of consumers would prioritise this access. |
| Spin-cycle noise |
Noise emissions and noise class on the energy label; whether the machine can stand on a stable floor. |
When the spin cycle runs near the bed or desk, peace and quiet become essential; noise would be the main concern for around 36% of consumers. |
| Use and durability |
Energy use per 100 cycles, water use per cycle and a capacity suited to your laundry; the durability index displayed in France. |
If I plan to keep the machine for a long time, I want to keep an eye on its energy and water use and durability; around 19% of consumers would put this need first. |

Frequently asked questions
What should I check in my studio flat before ordering a washing machine?
Measure the space and every part of the delivery route, then check the water inlet, drain and electrical supply against the instructions for the model you’ve chosen. Electrolux France also recommends clearing the space needed for installation before delivery.
Which noise indicator should I compare for a studio flat?
Compare the noise emissions and noise class shown on washing machine energy labels. European regulations specify these figures for the ‘eco 40-60’ programme. They can’t, on their own, predict how disruptive the machine will feel once installed, as this also depends on the floor and the building.
Is a quiet washing machine enough to avoid disturbing the neighbours?
No. A machine’s declared noise level doesn’t mean you can overlook careful installation or suitable washing times. In France, Article R1336-5 of the Public Health Code covers noise that disturbs the peace of the neighbourhood because of its duration, repetition or intensity. Also check the rules that apply to your building and local area.
How can I consider durability without comparing brands?
Check the durability index for the washing machine you’re considering, then look at its energy and water use on the energy label and its warranty terms. According to ADEME, washing machines sold in France have had to display this index since April 2025.
Can I change the connections if I’m renting?
If the work would alter the rented property or its fixtures, get the landlord’s written consent first. This is the precaution advised by ANIL. Before choosing a machine, find out exactly what changes would be needed to install it.
