Households focused on long-lasting appliances
You’re replacing a broken or worn-out appliance and want to look at maintenance, repairability and access to spare parts for the new model, as well as its day-to-day features.
When replacing your washing machine, first choose a size that fits the space available and a capacity suited to your laundry loads. Then compare the durability ratings of the new models you’re considering, without treating them as a substitute for information about washing, spinning, noise and energy consumption. If you’re interested in a washer-dryer, check its drying capacity and usage requirements separately.
You’re replacing a broken or worn-out appliance and want to look at maintenance, repairability and access to spare parts for the new model, as well as its day-to-day features.
You need to fit a washing machine into an existing space. The width, depth, door opening and whether you might stack it with another appliance all help determine the right size.
You’re looking for a drum capacity that matches the size and frequency of your laundry loads, without running extra cycles or choosing a capacity you’ll rarely use.
For new washing machines covered by the French labelling scheme, ADEME says the durability rating has applied since April 2025. Even so, start by working out which appliance will fit in your home: a durability rating tells you nothing about its dimensions or washing performance.
Consider this if: there’s room for a front-opening door and you’d like to install the appliance under a worktop or stack it with another appliance.
Keep in mind: according to UFC-Que Choisir, these models are generally around 60 cm wide. Stacking also requires a kit compatible with both appliances.
Consider this if: the available width is a key factor, or you’d prefer to load your washing from the top.
Keep in mind: UFC-Que Choisir says these models are generally between 40 and 46 cm wide, but you’ll need to leave room above for the lid to open.
Consider this if: you only have space for one appliance and genuinely need to dry clothes in the machine.
Keep in mind: UFC-Que Choisir says drying capacity is lower than washing capacity, so you may need to reduce the load between the two stages.
| Feature | What to check | Who it matters to |
|---|---|---|
| Durability and spare parts | Compare the durability ratings of the models you’re considering, then check whether parts are available and how to order them for the exact model. | My old appliance has stopped working, so I want to be able to maintain and repair its replacement. Around 31% of consumers would prioritise durability and spare parts. |
| Space | Measure the width, height and depth, as well as access routes; allow room for the door or lid to open. | In a tight space, I need to be able to install the appliance and load the washing without obstructing access. Around 31% of consumers would prioritise how well it fits the available space. |
| Capacity and use | Choose a capacity that suits your usual laundry loads. Compare the energy label and, where available, washing, rinsing and spinning test results. | I often wash small loads or bulky items and want a suitable capacity, without overlooking noise or cycle results. Capacity and usage would come first for around 25% of consumers. |
| Integrated drying | Check the washing and drying capacities separately; look at the information and duration for the wash-and-dry cycle. | With space for only one appliance, I need to dry clothes in the machine and am happy to accept a smaller drying load. Around 13% of consumers would prioritise this. |
The rating covers reliability and repairability, but not washing, rinsing, spinning or noise performance directly.
Use it alongside the energy label and dimensions, and look for tests of the features that matter to you where available.
An appliance may fit into the space but leave too little room for its door, lid or connections.
Check the depth and height, the delivery access route and, if you’re stacking appliances, that the kit is compatible with both models.
The stated capacity applies to reference programmes; other programmes may allow smaller loads.
Check the manual for the cycles you’ll use and choose a capacity that suits your usual loads.
UFC-Que Choisir points out that drying capacity is lower than washing capacity. Its tests also found longer cycle times and, for most models tested, water consumption during drying.
Compare the washing and wash-and-dry information separately, then decide whether the drying load will suit your needs.
These brands give you a starting point for comparing models, but they don’t guarantee the durability or spare-part availability of any particular appliance.
Bosch lists 7 to 10 kg washing machines on its French website and explains the durability rating applied to its models.
Miele lists front-loading and top-loading washing machines in France, as well as a spare-parts catalogue for its washing machines.
Electrolux lists top-loading washing machines on its French website and has a parts shop for its appliances.
Whirlpool is among the brands mentioned in UFC-Que Choisir’s survey of readers who own a washing machine.
Yes. According to ADEME and the decree of 5 April 2024 published on Légifrance, the rating has applied since April 2025 to new domestic washing machines covered by the French labelling scheme. The decree applies to appliances within the scope of the European regulation it references.
No. The durability rating covers reliability and repairability, not washing results. To compare rinsing or spinning, look for independent tests where available; the energy label provides separate information about consumption and noise.
It’s worth considering a repair based on the fault, the condition of the appliance, the part needed and the quote. In France, the government departments responsible for ecology say the Bonus Réparation is available through an approved repairer, subject to conditions including the appliance and fault being eligible. ecosystem specifies that the appliance must no longer be covered by a warranty.
Choose a capacity that suits your usual loads rather than relying only on the maximum figure shown. UFC-Que Choisir gives 5 to 7 kg as a general guide for one person or a couple. Check the manual too, as the permitted load varies by programme.
Follow the model’s instructions for positioning and levelling. Electrolux recommends placing the appliance on a flat, hard floor and levelling it correctly to help reduce vibration, noise and movement.
