What should you check before buying?
When choosing a new washing machine for a tight space, first work out what will limit installation: the width, the depth or the room needed to load the machine. You can then compare the other features of the styles that will fit.

What to check before buying |
What matters to consumers |
| Dimensions and clearance |
Measure the space and the delivery route. Compare them with the appliance dimensions and the installation and opening clearances given in the instructions. |
If my space is tight, I want to be able to install the appliance and open it without anything getting in the way; around 38% of consumers would make this compatibility their top priority. |
| Washing capacity |
Compare the capacity in kg with your usual laundry loads and the bulky items you actually wash. |
A compact style won’t work for me if it means doing more loads; nearly 23% of consumers would put a suitable capacity first. |
| Access and integration |
Check access to the drum. If you’re using a cabinet or stacking appliances, check the installation instructions and that the relevant items are compatible. |
In a fitted kitchen or with a tumble dryer stacked on top, I want loading to remain practical; around 23% of consumers would prioritise access and integration. |
| Use and aftercare |
Compare energy and water use, spin performance and noise on the energy label; check the terms of any services and warranties separately. |
If the machine is near living areas, noise and running costs matter to me once I know it will fit; around 16% of consumers would put these factors and aftercare first. |

Frequently asked questions
Is the width of the space enough to choose a washing machine?
No. Measure the depth and height too, then check the model’s instructions for opening clearance, connections and the space needed for installation. A top-loader is best suited to a width restriction, while a slimline front-loader is a better option when depth is limited.
Can you put a top-loader under a worktop?
A fixed worktop mustn’t prevent the lid from opening. If you want to install the machine under a worktop, check that you’ll have access to load it and follow the installation instructions for the model you’re considering. A front-loader is loaded from the front, provided there’s enough space for its door to open.
Can you stack any tumble dryer on a front-loader?
No. Both models must be approved for stacking, and the kit must be compatible with them. Bosch Home Appliances France recommends checking the manuals. Electrolux, for example, limits its AEG A1WYHSK2 kit to AEG front-loaders with a depth of 52 to 67 cm.
What should you compare on a washing machine’s energy label?
Compare energy and water use, spin performance and noise levels for the models that will fit your space. ADEME also recommends choosing a capacity that suits your needs, so the energy label isn’t a substitute for checking this.
What are your rights if the washing machine doesn’t match its description?
In France, the legal guarantee of conformity applies to goods sold by a business to a consumer, including when they don’t match their description, according to the Ministry of the Economy. Any commercial warranty is separate, so check what it covers before taking out an extended warranty.
