Who is this guide for?

Households that wash nappies frequently

To manage your nappy rotation without overloading the drum, start with the number of nappies you own and the other laundry you can wash with them. Lulu Nature recommends washing daily or every other day, and no more than 12 to 18 cloth nappies per load. Always check the care instructions for your own nappies.

Households that want control over wash cycles

If your nappies are made from different materials, check that the rinse, temperature and main-cycle settings let you follow their care labels. Lulu Nature’s guide describes a pre-rinse followed by a long cycle at 40 or 60 °C, depending on the materials.

Households that dry laundry indoors

Space and ventilation matter just as much as washing. ADEME points out that drying laundry indoors adds a lot of moisture to your home, so choose a well-ventilated room or one with an extractor fan. If you’re considering machine-drying, check the care labels on every part of the nappies.

What should you look for?

Start with how often you wash and the care instructions for your nappies, then compare machines based on their settings and how well they’ll fit into your home.

What matters What to check Consumers concerned
Capacity and nappy rotation Rated capacity, drum volume and dimensions; compare these with your nappy stash and the laundry that can be washed with it. When nappies pile up between washes, I look for a suitable load size without overfilling the drum. Around 31% of consumers would prioritise this.
Wash settings A separate rinse or spin, the main cycle and a choice of temperatures that match the nappy care labels. If my nappies need different temperatures for different materials, I want to be able to set each stage of the wash. This flexibility would be a priority for around 31% of consumers.
Energy and water use, and maintenance Energy rating, kWh per 100 cycles and litres per cycle on the EU label; also check the model’s repairability index and care instructions. With frequent washes, I want to compare the stated consumption figures and plan how to maintain the machine. Around 23% of consumers would put these points first.
Drying and available space Ventilation in the drying area; for a washer-dryer, check its drying capacity and the care labels on nappies, inserts and wraps. Without outdoor space, I need to find somewhere to dry nappies without overlooking indoor humidity. This would be the main concern for around 15% of consumers.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming the stated kilogram capacity tells you how many nappies will fit

The stated capacity refers to the weight of dry textiles under specified programme conditions. On its own, it doesn’t tell you how much space nappies and their inserts will take up.

Assess the load based on your nappy stash and the care instructions, then check the drum volume and the machine’s dimensions.

  • Relying on a quick wash alone

Lulu Nature’s guide distinguishes between a pre-rinse and a long main cycle. A programme’s ‘quick wash’ name doesn’t mean it carries out both functions.

Check the machine’s manual to see which stages, cycle lengths and temperatures you can select.

  • Assuming steam or a hygiene programme is suitable for nappies

These functions have names and operating conditions that vary from one machine to another. They don’t prove that a programme follows the care instructions for your nappies.

First, check the main-cycle settings and the fabric care labels.

  • Planning to dry nappies indoors without ventilation

ADEME highlights how much moisture laundry releases as it dries indoors. A washer-dryer raises a separate question: its drying capacity needs to be considered independently of its washing capacity.

Choose a well-ventilated room or one with an extractor fan. Before machine-drying, check the care labels on every part of the nappies.

Brands to consider for selected models

Electrolux

Worth considering if you want to compare the capacity, consumption figures and programmes of a front-load washing machine.

  • Electrolux lists the EW6F4109RA with a 9 kg capacity, a 68,6 L drum, 49 kWh per 100 cycles and 50 L per cycle.
  • Fabric-softener options aren’t a deciding factor for washing nappies unless you’ve first checked their care instructions.

Bosch

The WGG14201FR is a 9 kg front-load model. Check its manual for details of the programmes.

  • Bosch lists Hygiene Plus and SpeedPerfect among this model’s features.
  • Bosch’s description of the Hygiene Plus programme doesn’t prove that it’s suitable for cloth nappies.

Miele

The WWD380 WCS has a product sheet detailing its programmes and care features.

  • Miele lists a 9 kg capacity and a spin speed of 1 400 rpm for this model.
  • Miele’s claim that this model is ‘tested to last 20 years’ doesn’t guarantee how long it will last in every household.

LG

The 9 kg F94X92WSTE is worth considering if steam features are a secondary priority for you.

  • LG lists a Steam function on this model.
  • This feature doesn’t prove that a programme is suitable for the materials in your nappies; check the settings in the manual.

Haier

The HW90-B14959U1 has published dimensions you can compare with your available space.

  • Haier lists a 9 kg capacity, a spin speed of 1 400 rpm and dimensions of 595 × 583 × 850 mm for this model.
  • Check the manual for the version on sale to see which programmes suit your nappy-washing routine.

Frequently asked questions

Which programmes should you check for washing cloth nappies?

Check whether you can run a separate rinse or spin and main cycle, and choose the temperature. Lulu Nature describes a cold rinse followed by a long cycle at 40 or 60 °C, depending on the materials. The care labels on your nappies, inserts and wraps determine which settings are suitable.

Is a 9 kg washing machine automatically suitable?

No. The 9 kg figure is the rated capacity for dry textiles, not a guaranteed number of nappies. Compare your stash and washing frequency with the load instructions, then check the drum volume and the space the machine will need.

Which figures should you compare if you wash frequently?

The European Union energy label includes figures such as kWh per 100 cycles and litres per cycle, based on a regulated measurement method. Compare these figures across similar machines, but don’t assume they’ll match the consumption of your own routine. For front-load and top-load washing machines in France, the Ministry of the Economy says the durability index has applied since 8 April 2025. Check the score and its breakdown for the specific model.

How can you dry cloth nappies in a home without outdoor space?

For natural indoor drying, ADEME recommends using a large, well-ventilated room or one with an extractor fan, as drying laundry adds moisture to the air. If you’re considering a tumble dryer or washer-dryer, first check the care labels on every component. For a washer-dryer, also check its drying capacity, which is separate from its washing capacity.
