Who is this choice for?

Households looking for long-lasting performance

If you’re replacing an appliance that gets regular use, compare reliability and repairability rather than relying on an overall score alone. ADEME identifies these two criteria as the components of the durability index.

Households with limited space

The available width, space needed to open the machine and access to it can all influence your choice between a top-loader and a front-loader. Que Choisir notes that available space and a preference for top-loading both play a part in this decision.

Households with large laundry loads

If you usually have large loads, compare the stated capacity with how often you do laundry and the programmes you’ll use. Que Choisir points out that a large capacity is only useful if it genuinely suits your household’s needs.

What should you compare before buying?

First, check that the size and capacity suit your home and laundry needs. Then compare the durability and day-to-day features of the specific models you’re considering.

What matters What to check Who it matters to
Reliability and repairability Open the breakdown of the two sections in the durability index and check their criteria. ADEME states that reliability and repairability each account for 50% of the score. If I want to reduce disruption caused by a breakdown and know whether a repair might be possible, I look beyond the overall score. Around 28% of consumers put service life first.
Capacity and laundry routine Compare the capacity in kg with your usual loads and check how long the programmes you plan to use take. If my laundry regularly includes large loads, I look for a suitable capacity without choosing an oversized drum for the occasional big wash. Around 22% of consumers prioritise the amount of laundry they need to wash.
Size and access Measure the width, height, depth and access route, then check how much room is needed to open the machine. A top-loader needs clearance above it; a front-loader needs space in front of its door. If the machine needs to fit into a narrow space or open next to a piece of furniture, I check the dimensions and clearances before comparing scores. Around 22% of consumers prioritise the space available.
Water and electricity Compare the kWh per 100 cycles and litres per cycle on the energy label, separately from the durability index. For regular laundry, I want to compare the stated consumption figures on a like-for-like basis before working out my own running costs. Around 17% of consumers put energy and water consumption first.
Noise and convenience Check the stated spin noise level and, where available for the exact model, test results for washing, rinsing and cycle duration. If the machine runs near a room in use or cycle times affect how I organise my day, these factors matter to my everyday choice. Around 11% of consumers prioritise ease of use.

Pitfalls to avoid

  • Confusing the repairability index with the durability index

For the covered front- and top-loading washing machines sold in France, the durability index replaced the repairability index on 8 April 2025. An old score doesn’t show the breakdown of the new index.

On the product page for a new model, check the durability index and the details of both sections rather than trying to convert an old score.

  • Choosing based only on capacity or energy rating

Capacity and the rating shown on the label don’t tell you everything about washing or rinsing performance, programme duration or noise. These features vary between models and cycles.

Compare label figures on a like-for-like basis and, if available, look for test results for the exact model and the programmes you’re interested in.

  • Assuming collection of your old appliance includes installation

Free collection of an equivalent used appliance when you buy a new one doesn’t mean that installation is included.

Installation may be offered as a separate service. Before ordering, ask for details of the collection arrangements and exactly what the services include.

Brands to consider, depending on the model

Electrolux

The PerfectCare range includes top-loading washing machines. The EW6T3465DA is one example: a 6 kg model designed for spaces where width is a key consideration.

  • Electrolux France lists dimensions of 890 × 400 × 600 mm and electricity consumption of 42 kWh/100 cycles for the EW6T3465DA.
  • The SensiCare feature described by the brand is not proof of a longer lifespan. Check the model’s index breakdown before comparing its durability.

Bosch

The Series 4 WAN2827TFR is an example of an 8 kg front-loading washing machine to consider if you have enough room for the door to open.

  • Bosch Electroménager France lists dimensions of 845 × 598 × 590 mm for this model.
  • The advertised commercial warranty on the EcoSilence Drive motor applies to that component; it doesn’t replace checking the model’s durability index.

Miele

The W1 WCA120 WCS 8kg Active is an 8 kg front-loading model to compare based on its features and how well it suits your household’s needs.

  • Miele France lists consumption of 43 kWh/100 cycles and 48 l per cycle for this model.
  • The claim “tested to last 20 years” is a statement made by the brand, not a guarantee of the lifespan of every appliance. Check the detailed index and warranty terms.

Whirlpool

The TDLR62667FR is an example of a 6 kg top-loading washing machine for a space where width is an important consideration.

  • Whirlpool France lists a width of 40 cm for this model.
  • The product page consulted displays the words “Reparability Index”. Before choosing this model, ask for details of the applicable durability index.

Frequently asked questions

Two washing machines have the same durability score. How do I compare them?

Check the reliability and repairability sections and their detailed criteria for each model. According to ADEME, each accounts for 50% of the score. Then compare capacity, dimensions, the energy label and any available washing results.

Does a high score guarantee that a washing machine won’t break down?

No. The index covers criteria relating to the model’s reliability and repairability, but it doesn’t guarantee how long any individual appliance will work for. Also distinguish a brand’s claim about product lifespan from the terms of a commercial warranty.

What should I check before installation and when it comes to maintenance?

Measure the access route and the space where the machine will go, make sure there’s room to open it, then follow the manual for your model for connection and maintenance. Que Choisir reports that some respondents raised concerns about cycle times and access to the filter, so check these details in the manual too.

Warranty and collection of your old washing machine: what’s the difference?

For a new product sold by a business to an individual, the seller is responsible for the legal guarantee of conformity. A manufacturer’s commercial warranty is separate, as the Ministry of the Economy explains. When you buy a new appliance, the DGCCRF says that the free “one-for-one” collection of an equivalent used appliance must be offered. Check the practical arrangements with the seller, and remember that collection is separate from any installation service.

Which index and label should I check for a new washing machine in France?

Since 8 April 2025, the covered front- and top-loading washing machines have come under the durability index. The Ministry of the Economy says its details must be available when you buy, including online. The energy label is separate: check that it’s provided too, and review the consumption information shown on it.
