Who are these criteria useful for?

People who sleep or work from home nearby

If the machine will run near a bedroom or a home office, spin-cycle noise is an important factor. Compare the figure on the energy label and, for a specific model, the results of an independent test such as those by UFC-Que Choisir.

People living in smaller homes

When space is limited, you need to balance the capacity you want with the machine’s dimensions, the space needed for installation and clearance for the door.

People concerned about vibrations through the floor

If stability is a concern where you plan to install the machine, check the model’s installation and adjustment instructions. A manufacturer’s stated anti-vibration feature does not mean you can ignore the manual.

What should you check before buying?

If the machine will be near an occupied room, start with its stated spin-cycle noise level, then check it against the space available and the installation requirements. These criteria address different needs: a noise figure alone does not tell you how much vibration is transferred to the floor.

CriterionWhat to checkWho is it for?
Spin-cycle noise The noise level in dB and noise class on the European energy label for the exact model; compare machines with similar capacities too. When the machine runs near an occupied bedroom, I want to minimise audible disturbance during the spin cycle; around 36% of consumers would prioritise quiet operation.
Vibration and installation Whether the floor is level, and what the manual says about the feet, levelling and stacking the machine, if applicable. On a floor that is sensitive to vibration, I prioritise a stable installation over a single anti-vibration claim; stability would be the priority for around 29% of consumers.
Space and capacity The model’s dimensions, the depth required with the door open, the route to the installation space and the capacity in kg. In a smaller home, I need to be able to get the machine into place, open it and load it without sacrificing the capacity I need; around 21% of consumers would put this fit first.
Performance in use Whether there is a test of the exact model, including its noise measurement conditions and washing and spin-drying performance. If several product listings look similar, I prefer to compare them using measurements that also reflect how they perform in use; around 14% of consumers would consider this the most important check.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Relying solely on a “quiet” claim or the motor type

A feature advertised by the manufacturer does not tell you everything about how the machine performs. UFC-Que Choisir measures noise, as well as washing, rinsing and spin-drying performance.

Compare the dB level and noise class for the model you’re considering, then look for an independent test of that same model, if one is available.

  • Relying on an accessory without planning to level the machine

The Bosch WAN24209FR manual states that incorrect levelling can cause excessive noise, vibration and the machine to move.

Check the floor and follow the manual for your model when adjusting the feet. Before adding a mat or pads, make sure they’re compatible with the machine and its location.

  • Measuring the space but not the route or door clearance

A washing machine may fit in its space but still be difficult to get into position or use with the door open.

Check the dimensions of the model you’ve chosen, the clearance needed in front of the door and the route it will take on delivery.

  • Assuming one model’s specifications apply to an entire brand

Noise, capacity, dimensions and stability features vary by model. A test of a similar machine may not reflect the one you’re buying.

Keep a note of the full model number, including the variant, when comparing the energy label, manufacturer’s product details and test results.

Brands to consider

Bosch

Worth considering if you’re looking for a front-loading washing machine with detailed dimensions and an AntiVibration design, including models such as the WGE02409FR and WAJ28057FF.

  • Bosch lists the WGE02409FR as having a 7 kg capacity, a 1,400 rpm spin speed and dimensions of 848 × 598 × 588 mm. It describes its AntiVibration design as helping to protect against vibration.
  • This description from the manufacturer does not prove that all its models are quieter. Install and adjust the machine in line with the manual for the model you buy.

LG

Worth considering if you want to compare the dimensions and stability features listed for specific front-loading models.

  • LG lists the F94V41WH as having a spin-cycle noise level of 72 dB(A), a 9 kg capacity, a 1,400 rpm spin speed, adjustable feet and dimensions of 600 × 850 × 565 mm. The F14R33WH product details mention a vibration sensor.
  • The vibration sensor listed for the F14R33WH should not be assumed to feature on the F94V41WH. Published specifications alone do not tell you how much vibration you’ll experience in your home.

Samsung

Worth considering if you’re interested in a model with a Digital Inverter motor. Always compare the label and dimensions for the exact model.

  • Samsung lists the WW90T4540TE/EF as measuring 600 × 850 × 550 mm and claims that its Digital Inverter motor reduces noise and vibration by minimising friction.
  • This claim from the manufacturer is no substitute for comparing spin-cycle dB levels and checking the installation requirements.

Frequently asked questions

How do you compare the stated noise levels of two washing machines?

For each specific model, compare its airborne acoustic noise level during the spin cycle, in dB, and its class on the European energy label. These figures alone do not measure vibration transmitted through the floor, so also check the installation requirements and, if possible, a test of the model in question.

Does an anti-vibration feature mean you don’t need to adjust the feet?

No. A stated anti-vibration feature does not replace the installation instructions for the model you buy. The Bosch WAN24209FR manual says that all feet must rest firmly on the floor and that incorrect levelling can cause excessive noise and vibration.

Can you put a tumble dryer on top of any washing machine?

Don’t assume that any two appliances can be stacked. Check the manuals for both models and make sure the stacking kit is compatible before you buy. For the Bosch WAN24209FR, the manual requires a stacking kit from the tumble dryer’s manufacturer. This instruction applies to that installation and does not cover every brand.

What else should you check on the energy label besides noise?

For household washing machines covered by European energy labelling, the European Commission says the label also provides information about energy and water consumption, as well as the Eco 40-60 programme. Check the details for the model you’re considering, and separately confirm its dimensions and capacity are suitable for your space.
