Who are these options for?

Households that use an indoor clothes airer

If you want to keep using your airer, check the spin efficiency and choose a capacity that suits your laundry loads. ADEME recommends paying attention to the spin-drying class when you need clothes to dry quickly indoors. Air-drying also adds moisture to your home, so make sure it’s well ventilated.

People with space for just one appliance

A washer-dryer combines both functions in one appliance. However, compare its washing capacity with the capacity for a complete wash-and-dry cycle: they can differ, as the separate capacities shown on Beko models demonstrate.

Households that do several loads in a row

A separate tumble dryer lets you dry clothes without tying up the washing machine. Before choosing this option, check the available space, capacity, noise level and installation instructions for the model.

Which features should you prioritise?

Your choice depends first on how much space you have and how you organise washing and drying. The features you’ll need to compare then depend on whether you dry clothes on an airer, in a two-in-one appliance or in a separate tumble dryer.

Spin cycle, then airer

Consider this if: you have space to hang your clothes and want to carry on drying without a dedicated appliance.

Bear in mind: the water left in fabrics dries inside your home. An effective spin cycle doesn’t remove the need for good ventilation.

Washer-dryer

Consider this if: you only have space for one appliance to wash and dry your clothes.

Bear in mind: depending on the model, you may need to split a full wash load before drying it.

Separate tumble dryer

Consider this if: you do laundry frequently and have a suitable separate space for the appliance.

Bear in mind: you’ll need room for a second appliance, and should compare its stated electricity consumption.

What matters to youWhat to checkWho it matters to
Drying on an airer Compare the spin-drying efficiency class and choose a capacity that suits your loads, rather than looking at revolutions per minute alone. ADEME recommends choosing spin-drying class A to speed up indoor drying. If my clothes spend a long time on the airer, I want to reduce how much water they retain after washing. Around 36% of consumers put this need to dry clothes on an airer first.
Available space Measure the space and, for a washer-dryer, compare its washing capacity with its capacity for a complete wash-and-dry cycle. When I can only install one appliance, both functions have to fit into that space, even if I need to dry a load in more than one go. This is the top priority for around 29% of consumers.
Electricity consumption For a tumble dryer, check the energy label and the stated consumption for the specified cycle. Compare cycles of the same type. I want to automate drying, but the stated electricity consumption guides my choice of model. Around 21% of consumers make this their main priority.
How often you do laundry Check the washing and drying capacities, as well as the length of the programmes that suit your loads. When I have several loads to do, I want to start the next one without waiting for the drying cycle to finish. For around 14% of consumers, keeping up this pace is their main need.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Confusing washing capacity with drying capacity

A washer-dryer may take less laundry for a complete wash-and-dry cycle than for washing alone. For example, Beko lists some appliances with an 8 kg washing capacity and a 5 kg drying capacity.

Compare both capacities for your chosen model with the amount of laundry you want to dry in one go.

  • Choosing a spin cycle based only on revolutions per minute

Spin speed alone doesn’t tell you how much water will remain in your clothes. For faster indoor drying, ADEME recommends checking the spin-drying efficiency class and choosing class A.

Also consider the capacity and noise level, bearing in mind which programme you’ll use.

  • Forgetting that an indoor airer adds moisture

The Q-WASH project, presented by ADEME, identifies air-drying laundry as an activity that adds a particularly high amount of moisture to indoor air.

If you keep using an airer, make sure your home’s ventilation systems remain clear, and take spin efficiency into account when choosing a washing machine.

  • Overlooking the space needed for installation

The space an appliance needs may not be limited to its stated dimensions: the door must be able to open, and the connections must suit the location too.

Measure the available space and check the instructions for your exact model, including its connections and installation requirements.

Brands to consider

Beko

Beko France lists heat pump tumble dryers and washer-dryers, so you can explore both types of appliance from this brand.

  • Some ranges list washing and drying capacities separately.
  • Compare these capacities and the dimensions on the product page for the exact model. Beko’s explanations of its technology aren’t a substitute for comparing appliances.

Bosch

Bosch Home Appliances France offers a range of heat pump tumble dryers.

  • According to Bosch, the WQG2451SFR model has a half-load option, which may be worth considering if your laundry loads vary in size.
  • Check which features are available on the model you’re considering and compare its label data rather than assuming they apply to the whole range.

Miele

Miele France offers heat pump tumble dryers, including the TCA520WP, which is listed with an 8 kg capacity.

  • Programmes for particular fabrics may help you choose, if they’re listed on the product page for the model you’re considering.
  • The drying benefits highlighted by Miele are the brand’s own claims. Check the model’s energy label and instructions too.

Haier

Haier France offers heat pump tumble dryers, including the HD100-C367GU1, which is listed with a 10 kg capacity.

  • The published capacity and dimensions for this model let you compare your expected load with the space available.
  • Don’t use this capacity or Haier’s stated benefits to estimate the consumption of another model: compare the relevant product details.

Appliances for your preferred drying method

These Joybuy appliances suit three ways of drying clothes indoors: combine washing and drying in one appliance, install a separate tumble dryer, or keep using an airer with a washing machine. The stated capacities don’t replace the need to check the available space and the instructions for your chosen model.

Samsung WD11DG6B85BEU3 washer-dryer

Samsung WD11DG6B85BEU3, 11/6 kg washer-dryer

Wash and dry with one appliance when the loads you need to process may differ between cycles. The title lists an 11 kg washing capacity and a 6 kg drying capacity, so you may need to split a full wash load before drying. Check the dimensions, connections and full-cycle details before deciding where to put it.

Frequently asked questions

Can you still buy a new vented tumble dryer in France?

The European Commission states that, since 1 July 2025, only heat pump tumble dryers may be placed on the EU market as new household appliances. This rule doesn’t mean you need to replace an appliance you’re already using.

Can a washer-dryer dry a whole wash load?

Not always. Compare the washing capacity with the capacity for a complete wash-and-dry cycle on the product page. For example, Beko France lists some appliances with an 8 kg washing capacity and a 5 kg drying capacity. With that difference, you’ll need to split a full wash load before drying it.

What should you check before installing a washer-dryer?

Check the available space and the connections specified in the instructions for your chosen model. The instructions for the Beko HTE8613YBST, for example, mention the electricity supply, water inlet and waste water outlet. Check the requirements for your own appliance before installing it.

Do you need to ventilate the room when drying clothes on an indoor airer?

Yes. Make sure your home is ventilated as intended: the Q-WASH project presented by ADEME highlights the moisture released by air-drying clothes. In France, the Order of 24 March 1982 provides for general and permanent ventilation in homes under the conditions it sets out. Don’t block the designated air inlets or outlets.
