Which households is it for?

Households with one laundry-appliance space

You have room for a washing machine, but not for two appliances side by side or stacked. A washer-dryer addresses this space constraint first and foremost, provided you accept a lower drying capacity. UFC-Que Choisir highlights this trade-off between washing and drying capacity.

Households that can install a separate tumble dryer

You can allocate space for a second appliance, without an external opening for a vent. A heat-pump condenser tumble dryer works without an air duct leading outdoors, as explained by UFC-Que Choisir and the European Commission.

People who often dry full loads

If you want to avoid splitting laundry before drying, compare the Eco programme capacity, kWh per 100 cycles, Eco duration and noise level of a separate heat-pump tumble dryer.

Buying priorities

Washer-dryer

Choose this if: one space needs to handle both washing and drying, and your drying loads are compatible with the stated capacity.

Bear in mind: drying capacity is lower than washing capacity, and programmes may take longer than with a separate tumble dryer.

Separate heat-pump tumble dryer

Choose this if: you can dedicate space to the appliance and regularly dry laundry.

Bear in mind: check the energy label, Eco duration, noise level, filters and the water collection or drainage method.

Priority What to check Your needs
Space and the washing-to-drying sequence Measure the width, depth, door clearance and access routes. Compare the washing and drying capacities of a combined appliance separately. I want to wash and then dry at home when installing two appliances or an airer would be difficult.
Installation without external venting For a separate tumble dryer, choose a condenser model. Check the electrical circuit, the intended socket and the room’s requirements. I want to install the appliance in an available room without creating a duct to the outside.
Capacity, duration and energy consumption Compare kWh per 100 Eco cycles, Eco capacity, Eco duration, noise and condensation efficiency class using the same generation of energy label. I want to dry a suitable load within an acceptable time without choosing a drum that is too small or overlooking electricity consumption.

Mistakes to avoid before buying

  • Looking only at washing capacity

A washer-dryer may wash a larger load than it can dry. A large wash load may therefore need to be split before drying.

Always compare both capacities in kg and plan your usage around the drying capacity.

  • Treating condenser drying and heat-pump technology as two separate new-appliance options

Condensation describes how water is collected, while a heat pump refers to the drying technology. Since 1 July 2025, new domestic tumble dryers placed on the Union market must use heat-pump technology, according to the European Commission.

For a new purchase, look for a condenser tumble dryer equipped with a heat pump, then compare the label, capacity, dimensions and maintenance requirements.

  • Mixing old and new energy labels

Since 1 July 2025, tumble-dryer labels have used an A to G scale and show consumption in kWh per 100 cycles of the Eco programme. An old A+++ rating cannot be compared directly with this new scale.

Compare models displaying the same generation of energy label, taking into account kWh per 100 cycles, Eco capacity and Eco duration.

  • Planning for the appliance without checking its installation environment

Laundry appliances must be connected to a suitable electrical circuit. Depending on the model, you may also need to manage a water container, a drainage connection or an operating temperature range.

Measure the space and doorway access, consult the manual and installation diagram, then check the socket, circuit and chosen water-management solution.

Guide to the brands mentioned

LG

LG France offers front-loading washer-dryers. The F164R78WSTA is an example of a combined appliance measuring 60 × 85 × 56,5 cm, listed with 11 kg washing and 6 kg drying capacity.

  • On this specific model, both functions are combined in a single appliance.
  • The 6 kg drying capacity remains lower than the 11 kg washing capacity; the stated overall depth reaches 62 cm with all components included.

Bosch

Bosch France offers heat-pump tumble dryers, including 8 and 9 kg models; the WQG24502FR is presented as an 8 kg model.

  • This range is worth considering if your home can accommodate a separate appliance.
  • Check the capacity, dimensions, noise level and installation requirements on the specification sheet for your chosen model.

Electrolux

Electrolux France offers condenser tumble dryers equipped with a heat pump, such as the 8 kg EW9HI783FC.

  • For the EW9HI783FC, the specification sheet states 8 kg, energy class A, 73 kWh per 100 cycles and condensation efficiency class A.
  • The manufacturer specifies operation between 5 °C and 35 °C: check that the installation room is suitable for your chosen model.

Frequently asked questions

Does a condenser tumble dryer need to be connected to an external vent?

No. A condenser tumble dryer, including a heat-pump model, condenses the water extracted from the laundry; this is collected in a tank or can be directed to a drain, depending on the model. A vented tumble dryer, on the other hand, requires an outlet to the outside.

Is a vented or heated tumble dryer still a new-appliance alternative to a heat-pump model?

Not for a typical new purchase in France. Since 1 July 2025, new domestic tumble dryers placed on the Union market must use heat-pump technology, according to the European Commission. Check the status and label of an older model or end-of-line product.

Which elements of the energy label should you compare?

Compare the A to G rating, kWh per 100 cycles of the Eco programme, the Eco programme’s maximum capacity, its duration and noise level. For condenser models, also check the condensation efficiency class; old A+++ or A++ ratings cannot be compared directly with the new scale.

Do you need a water supply for a separate tumble dryer?

Not necessarily. In a condenser tumble dryer, extracted water can be collected in a tank; some models also allow connection to a drain. Check the chosen method and the accessories included before buying.
