If you only have space for one appliance, a washer-dryer lets you wash and dry your clothes in the same machine. However, its drying capacity may be lower than its washing capacity, as UFC-Que Choisir points out. If you can fit two appliances, a separate tumble dryer lets you dry one load while another is in the wash. To stack them, though, you’ll need compatible appliances and a stacking kit.
Who are these options for?
Only room for one appliance
In a small kitchen, bathroom or narrow utility room, a washer-dryer saves you from having to make space for a second appliance. Be sure to check how much laundry the model can dry, as well as the room needed to open the door.
Several loads to get through
With two separate appliances, one load can be drying while the next is being washed. A washer-dryer uses its single drum for both stages, so this can slow you down if the laundry is piling up.
Plenty of height, but limited floor space
A stacked set-up lets you fit two appliances in the space of one. The models and stacking kit must be compatible; matching dimensions alone aren’t enough to confirm that they can be stacked safely.
What should you check before choosing?
Start by measuring the space you can actually use, then consider how much laundry you need to dry and how much time you have between loads.
| Criteria | What to check | Consider your needs |
| Space needed |
Measure the width and depth, and allow room to open the door. For a stacked set-up, check the available height and make sure both appliances are compatible with the kit. |
I only have one space on the floor: a washer-dryer could work for me. If I can make use of the height, I could also consider a compatible stacked set-up. |
| Capacity and cycle time |
Compare the washing and drying capacities separately, in kg. Check the full cycle time if you plan to put loads through one after another. |
If I want to dry a whole load without taking any clothes out, I need to keep within the washer-dryer’s drying capacity. If I have back-to-back loads, two drums let me wash and dry at the same time. |
| Energy use and cycle time |
For a washer-dryer, compare the figures for the wash-and-dry cycle, including electricity, water and duration. For separate tumble dryers, compare equivalent programmes and load sizes. |
I want to factor in regular use rather than choosing based on the advertised capacity alone. The energy label and product information help me assess the cycle that suits my laundry routine. |
| Installation |
Check the manual for ventilation, temperature and clearance requirements. A vented tumble dryer needs a suitable opening or duct to the outside. |
My appliance will be in a small room, so I need to make sure I can meet its ventilation requirements. Not having an external vent doesn’t mean a condenser dryer can go in an unventilated cupboard. |
What should you watch out for?
-
Going by washing capacity alone
A washer-dryer may be able to wash more laundry than it can dry. For example, the LG F164R51WRS is listed as having an 11 kg washing capacity and a 6 kg drying capacity, according to LG France. That means you’d need to split a maximum wash load before drying it.
Compare both capacities for the model you choose. If you want to go straight from washing to drying without taking clothes out, base your load size on the drying limit.
-
Enclosing a condenser dryer in a cupboard
Not needing an external vent doesn’t mean there are no ventilation requirements. Electrolux France specifically advises against installing a tumble dryer in a closed cupboard without ventilation.
Check the manual for the required clearances, temperature and ventilation for the model you’re considering.
-
Stacking two appliances without a compatible kit
Whether appliances can be stacked depends on the models and the kit, not just the space available. For example, Bosch says its WTZ2741X kit is designed for a full-size washing machine with a depth of more than 55 cm. This requirement doesn’t apply to every kit.
Check that the washing machine, tumble dryer and kit are all compatible, and make sure you can reach the controls once the appliances are stacked.
A stacked set-up also requires a suitable kit and enough room to install the appliances at height.
-
Assuming all ‘condenser’ dryers use the same technology
This term can refer to a heat pump tumble dryer or another type of condenser dryer. It isn’t enough on its own to compare their energy use or programme times.
Check which technology each model uses, then compare its energy label figures and cycle times for similar loads and programmes.
What guidance do manufacturers provide?
Bosch
Bosch’s stacking kits give you specific details to check if you’re considering a stacked washer and tumble dryer.
- Bosch says the WTZ2741X kit is designed for a full-size washing machine with a depth of more than 55 cm.
- This guidance applies to this kit only. Check which models are compatible before planning to stack your appliances, including if they’re from different brands.
LG
Two LG models show the different considerations for a washer-dryer and an integrated stacked set-up.
- According to LG France, the F164R51WRS washer-dryer has an 11 kg washing capacity and a 6 kg drying capacity.
- The WashTower F761TOWERB measures 700 × 1 890 × 770 mm, according to LG France. Check that you have enough height and depth. These specifications don’t apply to every LG model.
Electrolux
Electrolux’s installation guidance is useful when you’re assessing where to put a separate tumble dryer.
- The range includes heat pump tumble dryers with an advertised capacity of 8 kg.
- Electrolux France advises against enclosing a tumble dryer in an unventilated cupboard. Check the model’s manual for the required clearances.
Appliances for every set-up
These Joybuy options include washer-dryers for a single space, plus a separate heat pump tumble dryer if you have room for a second appliance.

Samsung WD11DG6B85BEU3 — 11 kg washing, 6 kg drying
This washer-dryer combines both stages in one appliance if you only have room for one. Its advertised capacity is 11 kg for washing and 6 kg for drying, so you can’t dry a full maximum wash load in one go. Check the dimensions and door clearance against your available space.

Samsung WD10HG6U34BEU3 — 10 kg washing, 6 kg drying
This washer-dryer is worth considering if you have space for just one appliance. It has an advertised capacity of 10 kg for washing and 6 kg for drying, so compare the load you want to dry with the latter figure. Also check the wash-and-dry cycle time and energy use against your laundry routine.

Roborock Zeo Lite with Zeo-Cycle — 10 kg washing, 6 kg drying
A washer-dryer brings washing and drying together in one appliance. Its advertised capacities are 10 kg for washing and 6 kg for drying, so you’ll need to take some laundry out if the wash load exceeds the drying limit. Check the dimensions and installation requirements before choosing this model for a small room.

Grey Roborock Zeo One with Zeo-Cycle — 10 kg washing, 6 kg drying
This washer-dryer lets you wash and dry your laundry in one space. Its title lists a 10 kg washing capacity and a 6 kg drying capacity, as well as automatic dosing and the LintClear system. Frequently asked questions
Can a washer-dryer dry the whole load it has just washed?
Not always. Its drying capacity may be lower than its washing capacity, as UFC-Que Choisir points out. Compare both figures in kg on the product information. If the wash load is larger than the drying capacity, take some laundry out before starting the drying stage.
Does a heat pump tumble dryer need an external vent?
A heat pump model doesn’t need the external vent required by a vented tumble dryer. You still need to follow its installation requirements: Electrolux France, for example, advises against putting a tumble dryer in a closed cupboard without ventilation.
Can you put any tumble dryer on top of a washing machine?
No. Check that both models are compatible with the intended stacking kit. As an example relating to one specific accessory, Bosch says its WTZ2741X kit is designed for a full-size washing machine with a depth of more than 55 cm. This requirement doesn’t confirm that other appliance combinations are compatible.
Which figures should you compare on a washer-dryer’s energy label?
Look separately at the washing information and the figures for the complete wash-and-dry cycle. The European Commission says the label includes information such as energy use, water consumption, cycle duration and noise. Compare the figures that match the way you plan to use the appliance.
