Who are these solutions suitable for?

Households that often dry full loads

If you do laundry frequently, a stacked set-up with two appliances may be worth considering so you can dry clothes mechanically without reducing the load after washing. However, check the exact model numbers and the compatible stacking kit.

People living in small homes with only one space available

A washer-dryer can be suitable when there is only room for one appliance on the floor. Bear in mind, however, that the drying load will be smaller than the washing load and cycles will take longer.

People who dry laundry indoors

If you dry clothes on an airer indoors, check the washing machine’s spin-drying efficiency and make sure the room is properly ventilated. ADEME recommends a large, well-ventilated room or one fitted with an extraction vent.

Key considerations

Washing machine with suitable spin speed

Choose this if: you mainly dry clothes on an airer and can ventilate the room properly.

Key point: an effective spin cycle helps laundry dry faster, but it does not replace ventilation.

Stacked washing machine and tumble dryer

Choose this if: you need to dry clothes regularly and have enough vertical space.

Key point: two appliances require documented compatibility between the models and the stacking kit.

Washer-dryer

Choose this if: you only have room for one appliance on the floor and completing washing and drying in sequence is your priority.

Key point: you need to adjust the load for drying and accept longer programmes.

Priority What to check Your needs
Humidity and ventilation Check the spin-drying efficiency class on the label. For air-drying laundry, choose a large, well-ventilated room or one with a VMC extraction vent. I want to reduce air-drying time without taking up more space in my home.
Stacked installation Measure the width, depth, height and clearances specified in the manuals. Check the kit against the exact model numbers of both appliances, not just their width. I want to free up floor space while keeping two separate appliances.
Capacity and cycle times Compare the washing and drying capacities of a washer-dryer separately. Also compare the duration of the complete wash-and-dry programme. I want to dry an amount of laundry that matches my usual washing loads, without having to remove part of the drumful every time.
Water, electricity and noise Compare kWh per 100 cycles, litres per cycle, duration and noise on the same basis. For a combined appliance, read the figures for the complete cycle, not just the washing cycle. I want to compare the real-world use of several appliances without confusing washing alone with washing and drying.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing a washer-dryer based solely on its washing capacity

The maximum drying load is lower than the washing load. A full wash load may therefore need to be split before drying, making the appliance take longer to use.

Compare both capacities in kg and choose according to the amount you actually want to dry at one time.

  • Stacking appliances without an approved kit

Similar widths do not guarantee stability. Bosch and Miele specify compatibility conditions relating, among other things, to depth, product series and the washing machine’s configuration.

Make a note of the full model numbers of the washing machine and tumble dryer, then consult the manufacturer’s compatibility documentation before choosing a kit.

  • Assuming a powerful spin cycle replaces ventilation

Spinning can reduce drying time, but air-drying laundry adds moisture to your home. ADEME recommends a large, well-ventilated room or one fitted with a VMC extraction system.

Use the spin cycle to shorten drying time and ensure suitable ventilation in the room you use.

  • Comparing only the energy rating

Water, energy, duration and noise figures are associated with reference cycles. For a washer-dryer, the washing-only figures do not automatically describe the complete wash-and-dry cycle.

Read the label and the model’s EPREL product information, distinguishing washing data from data for the complete cycle.

Brands and compatibility to know about

Bosch

Worth considering if you are planning a stacked installation with stacking accessories documented for certain configurations.

  • Bosch states that the WTZ280X kit is suitable for a standard washing machine over 55 cm deep, subject to compatibility with the tumble dryer.
  • This does not automatically confirm compatibility between appliances from another series or another brand.

Miele

Worth considering if you are looking for a stacked installation within compatible appliance series and accessories.

  • The WTV 406 kit is intended for specific Miele tumble dryer and washing machine series.
  • Compatibility depends in particular on the series and control-panel type, so do not choose an interconnecting kit based solely on the appliances’ width.

Beko

A brand worth comparing for heat-pump tumble dryers sold in France, particularly if you do not have an external air vent.

  • According to Beko, the heat pump reuses warm air inside the tumble dryer.
  • Since 1 July 2025, the European Commission states that only heat-pump tumble dryers may be placed on the European Union market.

Frequently asked questions

Can a vented tumble dryer work without an outlet to the outside?

No. The European Commission states that a vented tumble dryer requires air to be expelled outside. A condenser model collects water in a tank or can send it to a drain, without needing a hose to vent moist air outdoors.

Is a heat-pump tumble dryer suitable without an external air vent?

Yes, according to the European Commission, a heat-pump condenser tumble dryer does not require an external air vent. Nevertheless, consult the manual for clearance requirements, electrical supply, any water drainage arrangements and installation conditions.

Can you place any tumble dryer on any washing machine?

No. The stacked installation must be approved for the models concerned and use a suitable kit. Bosch requires you to check its kit’s compatibility with the tumble dryer, while Miele reserves certain interconnecting kits for specific series and configurations.

Why is a washer-dryer’s drying capacity so important?

It is lower than its washing capacity. A maximum wash load may therefore require some laundry to be removed before drying; choose the appliance according to the amount you want to dry in one go.

Do you need to ventilate when drying laundry indoors?

Yes. The French decree of 24 March 1982 provides for general, permanent ventilation in homes. For air-drying laundry, ADEME recommends a large, well-ventilated room or one fitted with a VMC extraction vent; also check the appliance’s own manual for specific requirements.
