Which setup is right for you?

Households with plenty of height but limited floor space

A stacked set gives you a separate washing machine and tumble dryer in the same floor space. You’ll need to check that the front-loading appliances, their depth, the stacking kit and the installation area are all suitable.

Anyone replacing an appliance in an existing stack

Note down the model numbers of both appliances and the stacking kit before replacing either machine. Similar widths or matching brands aren’t enough: Bosch and Electrolux each set specific compatibility requirements for their kits.

People who can’t stack two appliances

A washer-dryer combines both functions in one appliance. Compare the amount of laundry you need to dry with its drying capacity, which differs from its washing capacity. Make sure you can also access the connections and controls.

What should you check before choosing?

First, find out whether a stacked set can be installed in your chosen space. Then compare how it would fit into your daily routine with a washer-dryer.

Priority What to check How it fits my needs
Stacking kit compatibility Check the manuals to confirm that the tumble dryer can be placed on top of the washing machine using your chosen kit. Check the exact model numbers, depth, any model exclusions and the manufacturers’ stated load limits. I want to keep two separate appliances without choosing a kit based only on the machines’ width.
Space and access Measure the total height and the space in front of the doors. Make sure you’ll still be able to reach the controls and connections, and carry out maintenance once the appliances are installed. I want to free up floor space, but I still need to be able to load the tumble dryer and maintain the appliances.
Load to be dried For a washer-dryer, check the maximum washing and drying capacities separately. Also check the duration and energy and water use of the cycle you intend to use: UFC-Que Choisir highlights the trade-offs in cycle duration and water consumption when drying. If I run a wash-and-dry cycle without removing any laundry, I’ll need to keep the load within the model’s drying capacity.
Bathroom location Note the position of the bath or shower, and have the location and circuit protection checked before any electrical work or alterations. Promotelec points out that the positioning of appliances in a bathroom depends, among other things, on electrical safety zones. In a bathroom, I need a suitable space for both the appliance dimensions and the electrical installation.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing a kit because the appliances are roughly the same width

Width alone won’t confirm that the depth is suitable or that a particular series isn’t excluded. For example, Bosch lists exclusions for its WTZ2741X kit, while Electrolux asks you to check the PNC for the E1WYHSK2.

Before buying, compare your appliances’ model numbers with the kit requirements and manuals.

  • Confusing washing capacity with drying capacity

The Bosch WNG25402FR has a washing capacity of 10.5 kg, but can handle 6 kg on a wash-and-dry cycle, according to Bosch. A load that’s suitable for washing may therefore exceed the limit for a combined cycle.

Choose a model based on the amount of laundry you usually dry, and check the limit for the programme you plan to use.

  • Checking only the connections in a bathroom

Available space and a water supply aren’t enough to determine where electrical appliances can be installed near a bath or shower.

If the electrical installation needs to be added or altered, ask a qualified professional to check the location and circuit.

  • Forgetting about access once the appliances are stacked

A tumble dryer placed high up can make its door or controls difficult to reach. A space that’s too narrow can also make routine maintenance harder.

Before deciding on a setup, check the height, door clearance and space needed for access. A stacking kit shelf can make it easier to handle laundry, but it doesn’t replace these checks.

Brands and models to consider

These examples show requirements to compare with your appliances and available space. They don’t guarantee compatibility with any other pair of appliances.

Bosch

Bosch provides information on both a stacking kit and a washer-dryer, giving you two options to consider depending on the space available.

  • Bosch says the WTZ2741X kit is designed to stack a tumble dryer on top of a standard-size washing machine more than 55 cm deep.
  • The kit excludes several Series 2 washing machines, so Bosch advises checking compatibility for your model. For the WNG25402FR washer-dryer, the brand lists a washing capacity of 10.5 kg and a wash-and-dry capacity of 6 kg.

Electrolux

The E1WYHSK2 kit includes a shelf and has specific compatibility requirements set out by Electrolux.

  • Electrolux says it’s designed for its front-loading washing machines and tumble dryers with a depth of 52 to 67 cm.
  • Depth alone doesn’t confirm that a pair is compatible: Electrolux asks you to check the appliance’s PNC.

Whirlpool

The FFWDB964369SBSVFR washer-dryer is an example of the capacities to compare if a stacked set isn’t an option.

  • Whirlpool lists a washing capacity of 9 kg, a drying capacity of 6 kg and a depth of 54 cm for this model.
  • Its drying capacity is lower than its washing capacity. Also check the space your installation requires, particularly in front of the door.

This washer-dryer is a one-appliance solution if installing a stacked set isn’t possible. If you’re choosing a stacked set, check the compatibility of the washing machine, tumble dryer and stacking kit separately.

Samsung WD11DG6B85BEU3 washer-dryer

Samsung WD11DG6B85BEU3 washer-dryer

This model combines washing and drying in one appliance if you can’t install two separate machines. Its stated capacities are 11 kg for washing and 6 kg for drying. If you want to run both functions without removing any laundry, keep within the drying limit. If you’re planning to install it in a bathroom, have the location and electrical circuit checked.

Frequently asked questions

Can you stack any washing machine and tumble dryer?

No. Check that the two front-loading appliances, their dimensions and the stacking kit are suitable for your setup, with the tumble dryer on top. Bosch and Electrolux’s published requirements show why exact model numbers and manuals matter more than matching widths.

How do you check whether a stacking kit is compatible?

Note down the model numbers of the washing machine, tumble dryer and stacking kit, then check the manufacturer’s requirements for that combination. Electrolux offers a PNC check for the E1WYHSK2, for example, while Bosch advises checking compatibility and any exclusions for the WTZ2741X.

When should you choose a washer-dryer instead of a stacked set?

Consider a washer-dryer if the height, stability, compatibility or access requirements make it difficult to install two appliances safely on top of each other. Check that one appliance will fit in the space and that its drying capacity suits the loads you usually wash.

Can a washer-dryer dry a full washing load?

Not if the washing load is larger than its drying capacity. UFC-Que Choisir highlights the difference between the two capacities. For example, Bosch lists a washing capacity of 10.5 kg and a wash-and-dry capacity of 6 kg for the WNG25402FR. Check the limits for your specific model and chosen programme.

What should you check before installing an appliance in a bathroom?

Before choosing a stacked set or washer-dryer, check its position in relation to the shower or bath, as well as the electrical circuit. Promotelec points out that electrical safety zones affect where electrical appliances can be installed. Ask a qualified professional to assess any plans to install or alter the circuit.
