For a room without an external vent, choose a condenser tumble dryer, either conventional or heat pump, and check the ventilation, clearance and water-handling requirements in the model’s manual. UFC-Que Choisir and the European Commission explain that both technologies avoid the need for an air outlet to the outside. Heat pump models generally use less energy, while conventional condenser models can dry clothes more quickly, although the trade-offs vary between models.
Who is this choice for?
People without an external vent
If your room doesn’t have an outlet to the outside, check that the tumble dryer’s technology is suitable for your setup, then look at the ventilation requirements in the manual. UFC-Que Choisir and Electrolux France’s recommendations highlight that not needing an external vent doesn’t mean you can ignore the room’s ventilation.
Households that dry clothes frequently
If you run frequent cycles, compare electricity consumption, programme duration and maintenance rather than focusing on just one factor. UFC-Que Choisir outlines the general trade-off between the lower energy use of heat pump models and the faster drying often associated with conventional condenser models.
Buyers short on space
Measure the space and check that the door can open, then make sure you can reach the water tank, filters and air passages. Required dimensions and clearances vary by model; LG France, for example, publishes the dimensions of specific models.
What to compare
First, check that the room can accommodate the model in line with its manual, then compare its running costs, cycle duration and maintenance requirements.
Conventional condenser
Worth considering: if faster cycles or a lower upfront cost matter more than energy use when drying clothes frequently.
Bear in mind: these models generally use more energy than heat pump models. The European requirements that have applied since 1 July 2025 concern units placed on the market from that date onwards. Check the model and its label rather than assuming an appliance’s status based on its technology alone.
Heat pump
Worth considering: if you dry clothes frequently and want to keep electricity use generally lower.
Bear in mind: cycles may take longer. Compare the duration, energy use, capacity and maintenance requirements of each model. UFC-Que Choisir notes that these trade-offs depend on the models and the conditions being compared.
| What matters |
What to check before buying |
Who it matters most to |
| Room suitability |
Drying technology and the ventilation instructions in the manual. |
If my room has no external vent, I want to know whether the model can be installed there and whether there’s enough ventilation. Around 33% of consumers put this suitability first. |
| Electricity consumption |
Compare kWh per 100 cycles and capacity on a like-for-like basis. |
When the laundry piles up, I look at the electricity used over repeated cycles as well as the initial cost. Around 27% of consumers prioritise electricity costs. |
| Cycle duration and purchase price |
Compare cycle times for equivalent loads and programmes, as well as the requirements that apply to the model. |
If I want to avoid long waits or keep the upfront cost down, I compare these factors without overlooking energy use. Around 20% of consumers put speed or purchase price first. |
| Size and maintenance |
Measure the space and check the door can open; make sure you can reach the water tank and filters, and check the maintenance instructions. |
In a narrow room, I want to be able to install the appliance and easily reach the parts that need maintenance. Around 20% of consumers prioritise available space or easy maintenance. |
Mistakes to avoid
-
Assuming no external vent means no ventilation is needed
A condenser tumble dryer doesn’t need to vent air outside, but a small room or an enclosed cupboard without ventilation can still cause installation problems. Electrolux France recommends taking the model’s ventilation and clearance requirements into account.
Check the room’s ventilation and the instructions in the manual before choosing where to put the appliance.
-
Choosing based only on the upfront price or speed
A conventional condenser model can be faster and cheaper to buy, but it generally uses more energy than a heat pump model. The difference matters even more if you use the appliance frequently.
Compare energy use, cycle duration and price across models with similar capacities, taking into account how often you’ll use the appliance.
-
Assuming “self-cleaning condenser” means “no maintenance”
Automatic condenser cleaning doesn’t necessarily remove the need to maintain other parts listed in the manual. Bosch lists this feature for the WQG2451SFR; a UFC-Que Choisir test published in 2020 covered different models and doesn’t allow conclusions to be drawn about this one.
Check the maintenance instructions for the exact model and make sure the filters are easy to reach.
-
Comparing old and new energy ratings directly
The letters on the old label can’t be read in the same way as those on the new European scale. The European Commission states that the new tumble dryer label has used an A to G scale since 1 July 2025.
Check which label applies to the model and compare consumption figures on a consistent basis.
Brands to consider
These examples relate to specific models or features. The brand alone doesn’t tell you whether an appliance is right for your room.
Electrolux
Heat pump models feature in Guide Topten’s French selection, while Electrolux France’s installation guidance also offers advice for condenser models.
- The manufacturer’s instructions highlight the need to consider ventilation in a small room or cupboard.
- This installation guidance isn’t an independent comparison of every model from the brand.
Samsung
9 kg heat pump models feature in Guide Topten’s French selection.
- The capacity of specific models can be a useful guide if it suits your household’s loads.
- Information about one model doesn’t apply to the whole range; check the full model suffix.
Bosch
Bosch lists automatic condenser cleaning as a feature of the WQG2451SFR.
- In a 2020 test of seven other models, UFC-Que Choisir found automatic cleaning to be beneficial.
- The test didn’t assess the WQG2451SFR’s performance, and this feature doesn’t remove the need to follow its manual.
LG
LG’s French product pages give details of the dimensions and features of specific models.
- For the RH8D14ST, LG France lists dimensions of 600 × 850 × 610 mm.
- The RH8D14ST doesn’t have a self-cleaning condenser; this information doesn’t apply to every LG model.
AEG
A 9 kg AEG model features in Guide Topten France’s selection, which provides energy use and noise figures for specific models.
- This information can help you compare the capacity and published figures for the model in question.
- Its place in this selection, which focuses on energy efficiency, doesn’t prove that it’s generally superior or right for your room.

Frequently asked questions
Can you automatically use a bathroom or small utility room without a window?
No. The absence of an external air outlet doesn’t automatically mean the room is suitable. Electrolux France recommends taking ventilation into account and advises against installing the appliance in an unventilated enclosed cupboard. Also check the clearances specified in the model’s manual.
Does the condensed water need to be connected to a drain?
Not necessarily. The water can collect in a tank or, depending on the model’s features, be drained through a hose connection. Check whether a tank or hose is included and whether a drain connection is possible in the room.
How do you compare an old A+++ rating with a new A to G rating?
Don’t compare the letters on the two scales directly. Since 1 July 2025, the new European tumble dryer label has used an A to G scale. Check the label that applies to the model, its kWh per 100 cycles and how often you use it.
Does a self-cleaning condenser mean there’s no maintenance to do?
No. This feature doesn’t necessarily mean there’s nothing left to clean. Follow the model’s manual to maintain the filters and other parts. The test published by UFC-Que Choisir in 2020 covered seven specific models, not every appliance.
Have conventional condenser dryers been banned since July 2025?
The technology alone isn’t enough to determine the status of a particular unit. The European ecodesign requirements apply to units placed on the market from 1 July 2025 onwards; this date doesn’t mean that older stock already placed on the market is illegal. Check the model and its label, in line with the information published by EUR-Lex.
