Who are these options for?

People without an external vent

You don’t have a suitable opening or access to a duct for a vented tumble dryer. According to UFC-Que Choisir, a condenser model lets you choose a separate appliance without this connection.

Households drying several loads a week

You’d like to rely less on air-drying. Drying capacity, cycle times and electricity use will all factor into your choice.

Small homes with space for only one appliance

You need to wash and dry your clothes in the same space. A washer-dryer fits the bill, provided you choose it based on its drying capacity, not just its washing capacity.

Which factors should you compare?

Standard condenser

Worth considering: if you can make room for a tumble dryer but can’t connect it to an external duct.

The trade-off: Whirlpool France says it uses more electricity than a heat-pump model. Also compare the cycle times for the programmes you’re interested in.

Heat-pump condenser

Worth considering: if you dry laundry regularly and want a dedicated appliance without an external duct.

The trade-off: compare energy use and cycle times for the programmes and loads listed on the specifications of the models you’re considering.

Washer-dryer

Worth considering: if you only have space for one appliance and want to wash and dry your clothes in one go, without transferring them.

The trade-off: the drying load may be smaller than the washing load. UFC-Que Choisir also recommends checking the full cycle time and how much water is used during drying.

Appliance and air-drying

Worth considering: if you only machine-dry some of your laundry, or if certain loads exceed the appliance’s drying capacity.

The trade-off: air-drying still takes up space, so make sure it suits the ventilation in the room.

To choose between these options without an external duct, start with the space you have, then consider how much laundry you actually need to dry and how often you’ll use the appliance.

FactorWhat to checkWho it matters to
Electricity use Compare energy labels and programmes that match your usual loads. Don’t estimate energy use based on the displayed rating alone. I dry laundry often and want to keep track of the electricity used for each cycle. Around 31 % of consumers would put energy use at the top of their list.
Drying capacity Check the maximum drying load. With a washer-dryer, distinguish this from its washing capacity and the maximum load for a combined programme. My laundry quickly fills the drum, and I’d rather avoid running extra cycles or leaving clothes on the airer. Capacity would be a priority for around 25 % of consumers.
Available space Measure the space, the clearance required and room for connections. Then compare the requirements of a wash-and-dry cycle. I only have room for one appliance to wash and dry clothes, and want to avoid buying a second. For around 25 % of consumers, size would come before other factors.
Using it in a small room Check the stated noise level, how water is collected or drained, and the model’s ventilation and maintenance instructions. My appliance will be close to a living area, so I want to plan for noise, emptying the water and cleaning. These considerations would be the main concern for around 19 % of consumers.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing a vented tumble dryer without an external vent

According to UFC-Que Choisir, this type of appliance needs an opening to the outside or access to a duct, so it isn’t suitable for this home.

Instead, compare condenser models, with or without a heat pump, or look for a washer-dryer that suits your installation.

  • Confusing washing and drying capacity

A washer-dryer listed as 9/5 kg can wash up to 9 kg, but its drying capacity is 5 kg. Electrolux France lists both capacities for its EW7W4954DS.

Before planning a wash-and-dry cycle without stopping, check the permitted load for the programme.

If the washing load exceeds the drying capacity, you’ll need to remove some of the laundry, run another cycle or use an airer.

  • Forgetting about ventilation and maintenance

Not needing an external duct doesn’t mean you can skip the appliance’s instructions for ventilation, condensate management and cleaning. Bosch, for example, recommends cleaning the fluff filter in its tumble dryers after every use.

Before you buy, check the manual for the recommended location, water tank or drainage options, and access to parts that need cleaning.

  • Choosing based on the technology alone

Whirlpool France says heat-pump models use less electricity than standard condenser models, but that alone doesn’t tell you how long a particular model’s programme will take.

If you need your laundry ready quickly, also compare the stated cycle times for similar loads and programmes.

Brands to consider

Bosch

The range includes heat-pump tumble dryers and washer-dryers. Compare drainage and maintenance features for each model.

  • Bosch Home Appliances France lists a 9 kg capacity, a noise level of 64 dB(A), a drain hose and a self-cleaning condenser for the WQG2450SFR.
  • These features aren’t available across the entire range. Bosch says the fluff filter still needs to be cleaned as instructed.

Whirlpool

The brand offers standard condenser and heat-pump tumble dryers. Compare the two types based on how you plan to use them.

  • Whirlpool France says its heat-pump models use less electricity than its standard condenser models.
  • The room still needs ventilation, and the appliance needs regular maintenance. For its 9 kg FFTM229X3BSFR, Whirlpool describes a condenser filter that’s easier to clean. Check that the model is available before choosing it.

Electrolux

Its washer-dryers let you weigh up the benefits of having just one appliance against their different washing and drying capacities.

  • Electrolux France lists a 9 kg washing capacity and a 5 kg drying capacity for the PerfectCare 700 EW7W4954DS.
  • For this model, the brand gives a cycle time of 6 h 20 for its Eco 40-60 wash-and-dry programme at full load. Check how long the programme you plan to use takes.

LG

The range includes slim washer-dryers, worth considering when depth is limited.

  • For the F852SV52IRS, LG France lists a depth of 47,5 cm, a washing capacity of 8,5 kg and a drying capacity of 5 kg.
  • For the same model, LG lists a cycle time of 7 h 50 at full load and 90 L of water per drying cycle. So size isn’t the only factor to consider.

Tumble dryers for a dedicated space

These condenser tumble dryers, including two heat-pump models, are suited to homes where a separate drying appliance can be installed without an external duct. Before choosing, compare their installation and maintenance requirements with the space you have.

Frequently asked questions

Does a condenser tumble dryer need an external duct?

No. According to UFC-Que Choisir, condenser models can work without an air connection to the outside, including heat-pump models. However, check the manual to see how water is collected or drained, and what ventilation the room needs.

Can you wash and then dry 9 kg of laundry in a 9/5 kg washer-dryer?

No, not in one continuous cycle with that load: 9 kg is the maximum washing capacity, while 5 kg is the drying capacity. For the EW7W4954DS, Electrolux France lists these two capacities specifically. Follow the manual’s load limit for a combined programme, or remove some laundry before drying.

How do you compare the energy use of two tumble dryers?

Check the energy label and specifications for the exact models, then compare the stated energy use for the programmes and loads you plan to use. EUR-Lex sets out the energy labelling requirements for tumble dryers sold in the European Union. The terms ‘heat pump’ and ‘condenser’ alone aren’t enough to compare them.

What maintenance does a condenser tumble dryer need?

Clean the filters and manage the collected water as instructed in the model’s manual. Bosch recommends cleaning the fluff filter after every use of its tumble dryers. Also check the instructions for the condenser and drainage system on the appliance you choose.
