Without an external vent or accessible ducting, rule out vented tumble dryers: a standard condenser or heat pump model is better suited to this setup. If you dry clothes frequently, a heat pump model will generally reduce electricity consumption, although cycles may take longer and regular maintenance remains important. An airer is only suitable for a sufficiently well-ventilated room.
Who is it for?
Tenants or homeowners without an external vent
If an external connection is not possible, choose a condenser tumble dryer, either a standard or heat pump model, or air-dry your clothes in a genuinely well-ventilated room. UFC-Que Choisir distinguishes these appliances from vented models, which require a connection to the outside.
Households drying clothes several times a week
A heat pump model is worth considering if you want to limit electricity consumption over repeated cycles and can accept a generally longer drying time, together with regular maintenance.
People with a small or poorly ventilated room
Measure the available space and check the clearances specified in the manual, access to the water tank or drain, and air circulation. For an airer, ADEME recommends a large, well-ventilated room or one fitted with a VMC extraction vent.
Buying priorities
Heat pump
Choose this if: you dry clothes regularly and can set aside a permanent space with access to a power supply and the specified water tank or drain.
Bear in mind: cycles are generally longer, and the filters and prescribed maintenance components must remain accessible.
Standard condenser
Choose this if: you prioritise generally faster drying while still avoiding a connection to the outside.
Bear in mind: UFC-Que Choisir reports higher electricity consumption than with a heat pump model.
Airer in a suitable room
Choose this if: your flat cannot accommodate an appliance or if you only dry clothes occasionally.
Bear in mind: this option requires a large, well-ventilated room or a working VMC extraction system.
| Priority |
What to check |
Your needs |
| No external vent |
Condenser or heat pump technology; presence of a water tank; option for direct drainage depending on the model. |
I want to dry clothes without installing ducting or connecting the appliance outside. |
| Electricity consumption |
A–G rating; consumption in kWh/100 cycles; Eco programme duration; date and basis of the label. |
I want to limit electricity use without confusing the old A++/A+++ scale with the A–G scale applicable to new appliances concerned since July 2025. |
| Duration and maintenance |
Eco programme duration; access to the filter, condenser and water tank; maintenance instructions in the manual. |
A longer cycle may suit me if the filters and cleaning components remain easy to access in my home. |
| Room humidity |
Room size; ventilation; presence and operation of a VMC extraction vent. |
If I choose an airer, I want to avoid building up humidity in a small, enclosed room. |
Mistakes to avoid
-
Confusing the lack of external ducting with the lack of water management
A condenser tumble dryer can operate without an external vent, but condensation must be collected in a tank or directed to a compatible drain when the model allows it.
Before buying, check the exact model reference for access to the tank, whether a hose or drainage kit is included, and the connection conditions specified in the manual.
-
Choosing solely based on cycle speed
Standard condenser tumble dryers generally dry clothes faster, but UFC-Que Choisir describes them as more energy-hungry than heat pump models.
Compare the A–G rating, kWh/100 cycles, Eco programme duration, capacity and noise level using comparable product specifications. Do not directly equate an old A++ or A+++ label with the new A–G scale.
-
Underestimating filter and condenser maintenance
Que Choisir tests found that dirt build-up in some appliances could lengthen cycles and increase consumption. A self-cleaning condenser can reduce some of this burden, but does not replace the required maintenance.
Read the maintenance instructions before buying and make sure the filters, water tank and other cleaning components remain accessible once the appliance is installed.
-
Installing an airer in a confined room
Air-drying clothes increases indoor humidity. ADEME recommends a large, well-ventilated room or one fitted with a VMC extraction vent.
Use an airer in a ventilated room and avoid relying on it regularly in a small, enclosed room without a working extraction system.

Frequently asked questions
Is an external vent required in a flat?
No for a standard condenser or heat pump tumble dryer: these appliances do not require a connection to the outside. It is still necessary for a vented tumble dryer, so this type does not meet the requirements of this setup.
Does a condenser tumble dryer need to be connected to a water drain?
No. Water is generally collected in a tank that you empty; some models also offer a hose or direct drainage kit. Check the product specification sheet and manual for the exact reference, as equipment and connection requirements vary by model.
Is an airer suitable for a small, enclosed room?
This is not the recommended setup. ADEME advises drying clothes in a large, well-ventilated room or one fitted with a VMC extraction vent, preferably humidity-controlled, because air-drying clothes increases indoor humidity.
How should I compare the energy labels of tumble dryers sold in France?
For new appliances covered by the rules since 1 July 2025, compare the A–G rating and the consumption shown on the current label. The European Commission states that an old A++ or A+++ rating should not be directly equated with a new A rating.
