Which type is right for you?

Quick cleans of your floors

You want to clean the hallway or a few rooms regularly, then put the appliance away. Manoeuvrability matters, but you should also check the run time and performance on your flooring. UFC-Que Choisir describes cordless stick vacuums as easy to handle for quick top-ups.

One appliance for every floor

You also want to replace your main vacuum, so the time it takes to clean your whole home and performance on hard floors, rugs and carpets become key considerations. UFC-Que Choisir notes that a corded cylinder vacuum can suit larger homes, although it is less convenient to move around and plug in.

Crumbs, furniture and awkward corners

You mainly need to clean surfaces above floor level. A handheld vacuum may be all you need for these areas; if you also vacuum floors, compare it with a convertible stick vacuum and check which accessories are included.

What should you compare?

For frequent quick cleans, compare each type based on how easy it is to get started, floor coverage, access to the areas you want to clean, maintenance and noise.

What matters to you What to check before buying Who this matters most to
Getting it out and putting it away quickly How much space it takes up when stored, how easy it is to handle, where it can be charged and whether it can reach the areas you want to clean. If I often move from the hallway to a few rooms and want to put the appliance away without any fuss, getting started quickly is my priority. Around 29% of consumers put this convenience first.
Cleaning every floor Performance on each type of flooring and run time in the mode and with the brush planned for the cleaning session. If I want to clean all the floors in my home in one session with a single appliance, I also compare corded models. Around 23% of consumers prioritise complete floor coverage.
Reaching surfaces above floor level Whether it converts to handheld mode, the attachments supplied, how heavy it feels in your hand and how much storage space it needs. For crumbs, furniture or awkward corners, I check that the appliance can reach the areas I need to clean without having to get out a floor vacuum. Around 18% of consumers prioritise these targeted areas.
Keeping routine maintenance to a minimum How to empty it, access to the filter, compatible consumables and the model’s maintenance instructions. If I want to avoid repeatedly handling the dust container, bag or filters, I check the maintenance process before choosing. Around 18% of consumers prioritise making these tasks easy.
Reducing noise disruption Noise measurements for the mode you are actually considering, and cleaning performance on your floors in that mode. If noise matters in my home or at the time I vacuum, I compare measurements taken in relevant conditions. Around 12% of consumers say noise disruption is their main concern.

Mistakes to avoid before buying

  • Assuming the maximum advertised run time will cover a whole cleaning session

Usable run time and vacuuming performance vary depending on the model and how you use it. If a stick vacuum cannot cover your floors, you may have to stop part-way through or keep a second appliance.

Before replacing your main vacuum, compare performance on your flooring and the run time with the brush and mode you plan to use.

If the run time is too short for your session, you’ll have to stop and recharge or keep another appliance to finish the job.

  • Choosing based on the motor’s electrical power alone

Electrical power alone is not enough to judge cleaning performance: the floorhead and results on your flooring matter too.

Look for tests suited to your floors rather than relying on a single wattage figure.

  • Assuming a dust container or emptying station means no maintenance

Dust containers, filters and stations all need attention, although they are handled differently. Bagged systems also need replacement bags.

Before choosing between a dust container, bag or station, check how to empty it, how to access the filters and which consumables it needs.

Depending on the system, remember to allow for replacement filters, station bags and other consumables.

Brands to know when comparing vacuum types

Dyson

Cordless stick vacuums, including the V8 Advanced, which converts to a handheld vacuum for cleaning floors and targeted areas.

  • Dyson claims up to 40 min of run time and a Motorbar brush for the V8 Advanced; this advertised figure does not guarantee the same run time in every mode.
  • These specifications apply to the V8 Advanced and do not tell you how all the brand’s stick vacuums perform.

Rowenta

The Compact Power RO3985EA is a compact bagged cylinder vacuum to consider if you want a corded appliance that fits into a limited storage space.

  • Rowenta describes this model as compact and bagged.
  • The bag still needs replacing, and the practical benefits of a compact design depend on the space you have available and how you store it. The manufacturer’s description is not a comparative test.

BLACK+DECKER

The dustbuster NVC220WBC-QW is designed for quick cleans of furniture and awkward corners.

  • BLACK+DECKER France says this model comes with a crevice tool and a brush for furniture.
  • A handheld vacuum on its own cannot clean every floor in your home.

Dreame

The Z30 is a cordless stick vacuum worth considering for cleaning floors and targeted areas.

  • Dreame’s French website identifies the Z30 as a cordless stick vacuum.
  • This description alone is not enough to compare its vacuuming performance or usable run time for a full cleaning session with other models.

Narwal

The V40 Station combines a cordless stick vacuum with an automatic emptying station, making it worth considering if emptying the dust container is a key concern.

  • Narwal describes a station that handles tasks including emptying, charging and storage.
  • The station does not eliminate maintenance or the need for consumables; run times can only be compared if you take the measurement conditions into account.

Frequently asked questions

Can a cordless stick vacuum be my only vacuum?

Yes, if its performance on each of your floors and its run time in the mode you use are enough to cover a full cleaning session. The size of your home alone is not enough to decide: check test results and the model’s specifications for your flooring.

When should I empty the dust container and clean the filters?

ADEME recommends emptying the dust container or bag when it is three-quarters full. Maintain the filters according to the instructions, and only put a washed filter back once it is completely dry.

Does a vacuum sold in France have to display a repairability index?

The DGCCRF says that information about the repairability index must be provided for the relevant categories of household vacuum cleaners, including corded, cordless battery-powered and robot models, and on online shops and marketplaces. The index is not a minimum rating that buyers are required to meet.

What warranty applies when buying from a professional seller in France?

For a new product bought by a consumer from a professional seller, the statutory guarantee of conformity allows you to make a claim for two years. This is separate from any optional commercial warranty; also check which bags, filters and parts are compatible with the model you choose.

What should I do with my old vacuum when replacing it?

When you buy a new equivalent appliance or replace an old one, ecosystem says the retailer must offer a free take-back solution for the old appliance. For online sales, the take-back arrangements must be explained when you place your order and do not necessarily include collection from your home.
