Who is this guide for?

Anyone preparing portions of different foods

You package foods with different textures and want to adjust the suction or sealing to suit what you’re preparing. FoodSaver France and Tefal France product information describes controls designed for these needs.

Home cooks preparing several portions at once

You prepare several portions in one session, so being able to cut bags to the right size and clean up any collected juices matters. FoodSaver France product information highlights features on specific models, including a built-in cutter and a removable drip tray.

Users of vacuum containers

You prefer to package some portions in containers and want to know which parts are compatible. FoodSaver France and ZWILLING France product information describes the accessory systems and containers designed for their respective ranges.

What should you compare?

Start by considering the foods and containers you want to package, then check which consumables are compatible. If you’re preparing several portions at once, also think about cutting, cleaning and storage space.

What matters to you What to check Who it matters most to
Tailoring the sealing process to moist or delicate foods Check suction control and sealing settings separately, and consult the instructions to see which uses are permitted. If I’m packaging delicate or moist foods, I want to adjust the suction and sealing to suit their texture. Around 26% of consumers prioritise this adaptability to different foods.
Choosing portion sizes and consumables Compare compatible bag sizes, the seal-only function and whether there’s a cutter. Check the cost of refills before you buy. When my portions vary in size, I want to choose suitable packaging without losing track of what I’ll need to replace. Around 21% of consumers prioritise portion sizes and consumables.
Preparing several portions and cleaning the machine Check storage and cutting features, removable parts and the model’s cleaning instructions. If I’m preparing several portions in one session, I want to organise cutting and cleaning without adding complicated steps. Around 21% of consumers prioritise batch preparation and cleaning.
Using compatible containers Check which containers, valves and adaptors are designed for the system, as well as which accessories are actually included. When I’m packaging portions in containers, I want to identify the compatible system and the accessories I’ll need. Around 16% of consumers prioritise using containers.
Storing the machine easily Tell the difference between a countertop sealer and a portable pump, and check how the model can be stored and how much space it takes up. If storage space is limited, I want to know how much room the machine needs and what types of packaging it can handle. Around 16% of consumers prioritise compact storage.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Confusing vacuum packaging with food safety

Removing the air doesn’t eliminate every food safety risk: hygiene and storage conditions still matter.

Follow good hygiene practices and the storage instructions appropriate for each food. Don’t treat a promise of freshness as a guaranteed storage period.

  • Comparing only the machine itself

The contents of the box won’t necessarily include everything you’ll need later.

Before choosing, check which compatible bags, rolls, containers and accessories you may need to replace or buy.

Depending on the system, you may need to replace consumables or buy specific containers.

  • Assuming a compact pump can seal rolls

According to FoodSaver France and a review published by Ultracooker, the FoodSaver VS1199X is a portable pump with no sealing function, not a countertop sealer.

First decide whether you need to vacuum a container with a valve or make sealed bags.

A pump that uses valve bags or dedicated containers may require you to buy compatible accessories.

  • Reusing packaging because it looks undamaged

Whether you can reuse a container depends on what it was designed for and how it should be used.

Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and don’t reuse single-use containers. The DGCCRF advises following the usage conditions for materials intended to come into contact with food.

Brands to know when comparing systems

FoodSaver

The FFS005X and FFS017X models illustrate different approaches to suction control, sealing and accessories.

  • FoodSaver France describes four suction speeds, including manual control, on the FFS005X. The FFS017X has a roll compartment with a built-in cutter.
  • The adaptors for the FFS017X are designed for FoodSaver zip bags and freshness containers. Check compatibility before choosing containers.

Tefal

The Vacupack Classic VT254070 combines a bag sealer with vertical storage, as specified by the manufacturer.

  • Tefal France lists a Stop function and states that this model is repairable for 15 years.
  • This doesn’t mean repairs are free for 15 years. Check the terms and which consumables are compatible.

ZWILLING

The Fresh & Save system uses a pump and compatible containers, rather than a sealer for standard rolls.

  • ZWILLING France says the pump switches off automatically once the required vacuum is reached. The system also offers reusable valve bags.
  • Your choice depends on compatibility between the pump, bags and containers, so check which models are designed to work together.

Essentielb

The EASV2 model, documented by Boulanger, is a vacuum sealer with a cutting blade and accessories for containers.

  • Boulanger’s product information lists a built-in blade and container accessories.
  • The same product information states that it doesn’t have double sealing. These specifications come from the supplier and aren’t independent measurements.

Frequently asked questions

Is the moist mode suitable for sealing soup?

No. A moist mode shouldn’t automatically be treated as a liquid mode. The French product information for the FoodSaver VS5910X distinguishes between dry, moist and liquid modes. Check the instructions to make sure your chosen model is suitable for the food and use you have in mind.

Can you use any freezer bag?

No. Being suitable for food contact doesn’t necessarily mean a bag is compatible with a vacuum sealer. Check which consumables the manufacturer recommends: valve bags and heat-seal bags are designed for different systems.

Which consumables should you budget for after buying?

Allow for replacing compatible bags or rolls. A system that uses containers may also need suitable boxes or accessories. Check which models and parts your machine requires before comparing your options.

Does vacuum sealing let you store portions without keeping them chilled?

No. Vacuum sealing doesn’t replace good chilling and storage practices. For relevant foods, Anses recommends monitoring your fridge temperature and states that the coldest area should be at 4 °C. This advice doesn’t specify how long vacuum-sealed food can be stored.

What should you check on bags and containers intended for food in France?

The DGCCRF recommends using containers designed for food and following their usage instructions. Single-use containers must not be reused.
