Who is this option for?

Homes with tiled, PVC or vinyl flooring

If these floors cover a large part of your home, a wet-cleaning appliance can help with frequent marks and small spills. Make sure you also have a suitable way to deal with dry debris: UFC-Que Choisir distinguishes wet cleaning from conventional vacuuming.

Homes with wood or laminate flooring

Care instructions for damp cleaning depend on the material and its finish. Before using a wet roller, compare the appliance instructions with the care guidance for your flooring.

Anyone prepared to maintain the appliance

Vacuuming and washing in one go can save you from switching tools during cleaning. However, you’ll need to deal with the dirty water, clean the parts that come into contact with it and replace consumables as needed.

What should you check before choosing?

Start by checking your floor’s care instructions, then consider whether the dirt you need to tackle justifies the extra maintenance involved with a wet-cleaning appliance.

Roller floor cleaner

Worth considering: for regularly washing a hard floor whose care instructions allow this type of wet cleaning.

The trade-off: UFC-Que Choisir notes that a floor cleaner doesn’t replace a vacuum for dry dust and debris.

Vacuum mop

Worth considering: if you want to pick up everyday dirt and wash a compatible hard floor in one pass, where the model allows it.

The trade-off: tests published by UFC-Que Choisir in March 2026 don’t justify treating this category as a substitute for a dedicated vacuum, or relying on it to remove stubborn stains.

Separate vacuum and mop

Best if: you haven’t confirmed that your wood flooring is suitable for a wet-cleaning machine, or you want direct control over how much moisture you apply.

The trade-off: dusting and washing take two passes. For wood flooring, Pergo recommends using a slightly damp mop, not a soaking-wet one; always follow the care instructions for your particular floor.

PriorityWhat to checkDepending on your needs
Floor compatibility Identify your flooring and its finish, then compare its care instructions with the appliance manual. A water setting alone doesn’t mean the appliance is safe to use on wood flooring. Before using a wet roller on my wood or laminate floor, I want to know how much water it can tolerate.
Type of dirt Check whether the model combines vacuuming and washing, and keep a suitable method for dry dust and ingrained stains. UFC-Que Choisir highlights limitations in this category for these tasks. I often clean light marks or spills, but I don’t want to assume that every type of debris and stain will come up in one pass.
Maintenance after use Check how easy it is to access the tanks, roller and filter, and what cleaning and drying steps the manual recommends. Self-cleaning doesn’t remove the need to deal with dirty water. If I wash the floor several times a week, the time it takes to clean and put the appliance away matters just as much as the cleaning itself.
Floor area and consumables Compare the stated run time and tank capacity with the area you need to clean, and check which rollers, filters and cleaning products are approved. The maximum stated run time doesn’t guarantee how much floor you’ll cover at home. For a large hard-floor area, I’d like to know whether I’ll need to stop part-way through and whether the parts needed for maintenance are easy to get hold of.

What should you avoid?

  • Expecting it to replace your vacuum completely

UFC-Que Choisir says floor cleaners mainly work by wet cleaning, and have limitations when dealing with dry debris and stubborn stains.

Keep a dry-dusting solution handy and be prepared to treat ingrained stains separately.

  • Damp-cleaning wood flooring without checking its finish

Kärcher says the FC 8 is compatible with some wood floors, while UFC-Que Choisir advises against using this category on wood flooring. A statement about compatibility with sealed wood flooring doesn’t apply to every type of wood floor.

Check both sets of instructions: those for your flooring and those for the appliance. Until compatibility is confirmed, use the cleaning method recommended for your floor.

  • Forgetting about model-specific consumables

UFC-Que Choisir notes that rollers, filters and detergents need replacing and are generally specific to each brand.

Before buying, check the replacement part numbers and which cleaning fluids are approved for the model you’re considering.

  • Choosing based on run time or self-cleaning alone

These features don’t prove how well an appliance tackles dried-on stains or picks up dry dirt. An automatic cycle also won’t save you from emptying the dirty water.

Also check floor compatibility, tank capacity and access to the roller. Where independent test results are available for the exact model, take a look at those too.

Which ranges should you know about?

These ranges showcase different features to compare. A feature listed for one model doesn’t automatically apply to other appliances from the same brand.

Kärcher

The range includes roller floor cleaners such as the FC 8 Smart Signature Line, which Kärcher France says offers adjustable roller speed and water flow.

  • Kärcher describes the FC 8 as suitable for several types of hard flooring, including tiles and some wood floors. Its universal rollers, which are compatible with several models, are listed as machine washable at 60 °C.
  • The stated compatibility of the appliance and its accessories doesn’t override the care instructions for your particular flooring.

Rowenta

According to Rowenta France, the X-Clean range includes cordless vacuum mops designed to pick up everyday dirt and wash hard floors.

  • Rowenta claims up to 60 minutes’ run time for the X-Clean 10 and up to 65 minutes for the X-Clean 12, as well as automatic cleaning and drying cycles.
  • These stated features don’t guarantee results on stubborn stains or mean the appliance can replace a dedicated vacuum. UFC-Que Choisir highlights these limitations for the category.

Electrolux

In its Wet&Dry range, Electrolux France describes the 800 EW81U3DB as a cordless appliance that combines vacuuming and washing.

  • For this model, Electrolux claims up to 35 minutes’ run time, a 600 ml clean water tank and a 550 ml dirty water tank.
  • Electrolux support notes that some Wet&Dry 800 models may experience problems with airflow, leaks or residual water. Check the care instructions for the appliance you choose.

Frequently asked questions

Can a hard floor cleaner replace a vacuum and mop?

Not in every situation. UFC-Que Choisir says floor cleaners are mainly designed to wet-clean hard surfaces, are poor at picking up dry debris and have limitations when tackling stubborn stains. Keep a dry vacuuming method if you regularly need to remove dust, crumbs or other debris.

Can I use a roller cleaner on my wood floor?

Only if both the flooring and appliance instructions allow it. UFC-Que Choisir advises against using this category on wood floors, while Kärcher says its FC 8 is compatible with some wood flooring. Check the material and finish before relying on general compatibility claims.

What needs maintaining after wet cleaning?

Plan to empty the dirty water and clean and dry the parts specified in the manual, particularly the roller and filter. The self-cleaning cycle offered on some models may take care of some of this, but the tanks and consumables still need maintenance.

What does France’s repairability index tell me?

For applicable vacuum cleaners, France’s repairability index is a score out of 10 displayed in shops and online, according to the ministry responsible for the ecological transition. Check whether it applies to the model you’re considering. It tells you about repairability, not cleaning performance or compatibility with your floor.
