Which type of vacuum suits each cleaning need ?

Small home, frequent cleaning

You want to quickly pick up dust and crumbs, and store your appliance easily. Que Choisir Ensemble describes stick vacuums as a practical option for regular cleaning, but whether they can handle a full session depends on your flooring and the model you choose.

Several rooms or carpets to clean

You want to clean without interruption and get proven results on your flooring, even if that means using a bulkier appliance. Que Choisir Ensemble recommends comparing performance and battery life for the way you plan to use it.

Simpler dust collection and maintenance

Choose between a bag, a canister and automated cleaning based on how you feel about handling dust, buying consumables and carrying out maintenance. Que Choisir Ensemble explains, in particular, the difference between removing a bag and emptying a canister.

What should you compare before choosing ?

Match your priorities — quick touch-ups, a full clean, dust collection or automation — to the flooring and tasks in your home.

What matters to you What to check before buying Who it suits
Speed and manoeuvrability Weight in your hand, storage and how easily it moves around furniture; performance on your flooring and battery life in the mode you need. In a small home, I want to quickly pick up dust and crumbs without relying on a stick vacuum for carpets before checking how well it performs. Around 34 % of consumers prioritise convenient, manoeuvrable cleaning for these touch-ups.
A full clean Performance on your flooring, run time in the mode you need, dust capacity and reach of a cylinder vacuum. For several rooms or carpets, I want to finish cleaning without battery-related breaks or having to empty the vacuum repeatedly. Around 33 % of consumers prioritise a thorough, uninterrupted clean.
Dust collection and maintenance Bag or filter model numbers; access to the canister, filters and brush for maintenance. If I want to limit contact with dust, I compare removing a bag with emptying a canister before choosing. Around 20 % of consumers prioritise dust collection and maintenance.
Automated cleaning Performance along edges, in corners and on carpets; obstacles in your home and maintenance of the docking station. I want to leave the robot to clean accessible floors, while bearing in mind that carpets, corners or areas around furniture may need extra attention. Around 13 % of consumers prioritise automation.

Pitfalls to avoid when choosing

  • Confusing a stick vacuum’s maximum run time with its run time on carpets

The advertised maximum usually refers to a low-power mode. In laboratory tests published on 17 October 2025, Que Choisir Ensemble measured an average of around ten minutes at full power across the stick vacuums tested. This result does not predict the battery life of any particular model.

Compare the run time measured in the mode you need for your actual cleaning session.

If the battery won’t last for a full session, keeping an additional appliance or planning for a compatible spare battery can also mean extra storage and maintenance.

  • Assuming a bagless cylinder vacuum needs no maintenance

A bagless canister needs to be emptied and cleaned. This exposes you to more dust than removing a bag, as Que Choisir Ensemble points out.

Choose a dust collection system that suits your tolerance for emptying the vacuum, and check which consumables are needed for the exact model.

  • Assuming a repairability rating guarantees parts will be available

A repairability rating is worth checking, but it doesn’t confirm on its own that a particular battery will be available. ADEME includes vacuum cleaners among the appliances covered by this rating.

Check the compatible model number and availability of the part you need separately.

  • Thinking a robot means you’ll never need to clean manually

Performance on carpets, in corners and along walls depends on the model. A robot won’t clean furniture and stairs in the same way as a manual vacuum.

Decide which areas and surfaces you’ll leave to the robot, then plan how you’ll clean the rest.

Brands to consider by vacuum type

Rowenta

Its range of bagged and bagless cylinder vacuums lets you compare different ways to tackle a full manual clean.

  • Rowenta France lists a 1,5 L canister and an 8,8 m operating radius for the Compact Power Cyclonic RO3731EA. The Silence Force 7 is a bagged model.
  • These specifications apply to the models listed. Check the accessories included with each variant and how it performs on your flooring.

Bosch

Consider the Unlimited range if replacing the battery is an important factor in your decision.

  • Bosch Home Appliances France describes an interchangeable 3 Ah battery for model BBS711W.
  • The manufacturer’s performance comparison doesn’t prove that the vacuum is better on every type of flooring. Check the battery variant and its availability.

Dyson

Compare V8 models, including the V8 Advanced, for quick clean-ups and accessories suited to different surfaces.

  • Dyson France advertises up to 40 minutes of run time for the V8 Advanced and lists a Motorbar brush.
  • The advertised maximum doesn’t indicate run time in a high-power mode. Check that the battery is compatible with the exact variant: Dyson lists an exception for the V8 Cyclone.

Miele

The bagged Complete C3 cylinder vacuums are worth considering for a full manual clean.

  • Miele France’s product details for the Complete C3 125 Edition list accessories for upholstery and furniture, as well as a telescopic tube.
  • These accessories apply to the model described. Check what’s included with the variant you’re interested in.

Roborock

Consider Qrevo robots as an automated complement, once you’ve checked that they suit your home.

  • Roborock France describes a multifunctional dock and automatic emptying for the Qrevo S.
  • The brush and charging contacts also need maintenance. Check how the model performs on carpets, in corners and along walls.

Frequently asked questions about choosing a vacuum

How can I tell if a cordless stick vacuum can be my only vacuum ?

Check that tests of the model cover every type of flooring in your home, then compare the length of your cleaning session with its run time in the mode you need, especially on carpets. This is a more realistic choice for a small home and short cleaning sessions, but an advertised maximum run time in an eco mode isn’t enough to prove it can handle the job.

Can a robot replace a manual vacuum ?

Not for every task. A robot can automate cleaning in accessible areas, but you’ll need another solution for furniture and stairs. Also check how it performs on carpets, along walls and in corners in your home.

Will a replacement battery definitely be available ?

No. Check the exact model number, compatibility and availability before buying. Dyson France specifies that its replacement battery for the V8 range isn’t compatible with the V8 Cyclone; this exception doesn’t tell you anything about other models.

Does a repairability rating guarantee that every part will be available ?

No. The rating alone doesn’t guarantee that a specific part will be available. The DGCCRF states that the legal requirement to make parts available applies to certain product categories. Check the information for the model and part you need.

What statutory guarantee applies to a vacuum bought from a business in France ?

The statutory guarantee of conformity applies to goods sold by a business to a consumer and can be used for two years, subject to the conditions set out by law. In its information sheet dated 9 September 2026, the French Ministry of the Economy explains that this is separate from a commercial guarantee. It doesn’t mean every worn-out battery will be replaced free of charge.
