Which type is right for you ?

People with a small space to store it

If you want to get your vacuum out quickly without leaving a bulky appliance in the room, make sure you also have space for its dock, charger or hose. Que Choisir highlights how easy cordless vacuums are to manoeuvre for quick clean-ups.

People with different types of flooring

If you need to clean carpets, hard floors or parquet gaps, check how the vacuum performs on each surface and how long the battery lasts in the mode you need. Que Choisir assesses performance on different floors and at different settings.

People who want to empty it less often

If you’d rather not empty a dust container directly, compare this with changing the bag on a cylinder vacuum, as well as the upkeep required for the filters and brush.

What should you check before buying ?

Cordless stick vacuum

Consider it if : you want to grab your vacuum quickly for cleaning the floors and have a suitable place to store and charge it.

Keep in mind : battery life may fall when using a higher-power setting, and you’ll need to maintain the dust container and filters.

Compact cylinder vacuum

Consider it if : you’d prefer an appliance that doesn’t need recharging during a cleaning session and have room to store the body and hose.

Keep in mind : moving the body and cable around can make quick clean-ups less convenient. A bagged model also needs compatible replacement bags.

Handheld vacuum as an extra

Consider it if : you already have another appliance for the floors and want to tackle crumbs, furniture or awkward corners.

Keep in mind : its size and runtime alone don’t show whether it’s suitable as your only vacuum for cleaning floors.

Criteria What to check before buying Who it matters to
Quick access and storage Measure the space available for the complete appliance and its accessories; check whether the dock needs to be wall-mounted. If I want to get the appliance out several times a day, I’d prioritise easy storage that doesn’t obstruct the way. Around 36 % of consumers put quick access and storage first.
Floor performance and battery life Identify your floor types and the brush supplied; compare test results for these surfaces and battery life at the setting you need. When my home has both carpets and hard floors, I want a suitable brush and battery life that matches the mode I use. Around 29 % of consumers prioritise performance on their floors and usable battery life.
Emptying and maintenance Check how easy it is to access the dust container or bag, and read the care instructions for the filters and brush. If I’d rather handle dust as little as possible after cleaning, I compare emptying a dust container with changing a bag. Around 21 % of consumers prioritise easy emptying and maintenance.
Consumables and replaceable parts Check the reference numbers for compatible bags or filters and, for a cordless stick vacuum, the replaceable battery. When I choose an appliance I plan to keep and maintain, I check which consumables are compatible and whether parts can be replaced. Around 14 % of consumers prioritise ongoing care after purchase.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing a stick vacuum based only on its maximum quoted runtime

The maximum runtime may apply to a low-power mode, while some carpets or messes may need more power and reduce the time you can use it for.

Compare tests carried out on the types of flooring you have and at the setting that matches your needs. In its laboratory tests, Que Choisir reported on 17 October 2025 an average runtime of around ten minutes at maximum power.

  • Assuming “compact” automatically means easy to store

A cylinder vacuum also comes with a hose and accessories, while a stick vacuum may need a wall-mounted dock. So measuring the space for the main unit alone won’t tell you how much room you’ll need.

Measure the space required for the complete appliance and check whether fitting a dock is practical in your home.

  • Comparing a bagged model with a bagless stick vacuum without considering maintenance

A bag means you don’t have to empty a dust container directly, but it needs replacing. A bagless appliance needs its dust container and filters maintained.

Before choosing, check the care instructions and the reference numbers for consumables or the battery that match the exact model.

Brands to consider by range

Rowenta

The X-Force Flex range includes cordless stick vacuums. The RH2078WO is an example of a model with a flexible tube and wall-mounted charging dock.

  • According to Rowenta, the maximum runtime of 45 minutes is achieved in handheld and Eco mode.
  • The stated weight of 1,1 kg also applies to handheld mode, not the complete appliance. These figures don’t describe a session using the floor brush at a high-power setting.

Bosch

The Série 2 BGLS2BU2 is an example of a bagged cylinder vacuum to consider if you prefer this type.

  • Bosch’s product information lists a 3,5 l bag, an 8 m operating radius and dimensions of 237 × 290 × 367 mm for this model.
  • You’ll need to store the hose and replace the bags. These specifications apply to the BGLS2BU2, not the whole range.

BLACK+DECKER

The DUSTBUSTER BCHV001C1-QW is a handheld model for localised messes, to use alongside an appliance for the floors.

  • For this model, BLACK+DECKER quotes a 500 ml dust container, a supplied 18 V 1,5 Ah battery and up to 14 minutes of runtime.
  • This quoted runtime isn’t based on an independent test, and this handheld model isn’t designed like a vacuum with a floor head.

Dyson

The V8 Advanced is a cordless stick vacuum to compare based on the space it takes up, its brush and the accessories you need at home.

  • Dyson quotes up to 40 minutes of runtime, a weight of 2,6 kg and a 0,54 l bin for this model.
  • The maximum runtime doesn’t predict how long it will last at high power. These specifications apply to the V8 Advanced, not every V8 model.

BISSELL

The French range includes several PowerClean FurGuard models, including FurGuard Select and FurGuard Pro.

  • Comparing the full model references helps you tell the different versions offered by the brand apart.
  • You can’t assume one version has the same features as another. Check the exact model before comparing equipment.

Frequently asked questions

How many minutes of battery life do you need for a small home ?

Floor area alone doesn’t give you a one-size-fits-all runtime. Identify the floors and areas you need to clean, along with the setting required, then compare battery life measured in those conditions. In its laboratory tests, Que Choisir reported on 17 October 2025 an average of around ten minutes at maximum power.

Can a handheld vacuum be your only appliance ?

Choose one primarily for crumbs, furniture and awkward corners if you already have another way to clean your floors. Check the quoted runtime and accessories for the exact model; its handheld format alone doesn’t show whether it’s suitable for cleaning every type of floor.

What should you consider when installing and maintaining a cordless stick vacuum ?

Check how much space the dock needs, whether there’s a nearby socket and whether the model is designed to be wall-mounted. Then maintain the dust container, brush and filters as directed in the instructions. Que Choisir recommends adjusting the power to suit the type of floor and carrying out regular maintenance.

What rights and repair information should you check in France ?

For goods sold to an individual by a trader, the legal guarantee of conformity is compulsory and is separate from a commercial guarantee. France’s Ministry for Ecological Transition states that the repairability index applies to corded and cordless vacuum cleaners. It provides information about repairability but doesn’t guarantee the appliance’s lifespan.

What should you do with your old vacuum when replacing it ?

In France, the “one-for-one” take-back scheme means the retailer selling you a new appliance must take back an equivalent used one free of charge. The DGCCRF advises consumers to check the arrangements that apply, particularly for online orders.
