What should you look for before buying ?
For a small home that needs frequent cleaning, first decide whether you need a main vacuum or an extra one. Then compare the practicalities of storage, use and maintenance.
| What matters |
What to check |
Who it matters most to |
| Quick to take out and easy to store |
How much space the vacuum and its stand take up, how it can be stored and access to a charging socket. |
If every clean needs to be straightforward and space is limited, I look at the overall footprint and how easy it is to manoeuvre. Around 33 % of consumers prioritise quick clean-ups and easy storage. |
| Cleaning floors and carpets |
Test results on your flooring, a suitable brush and the accessories you need for furniture. |
If the main vacuum needs to clean carpets and floors, I check its results on those surfaces before choosing. Around 27 % of consumers prioritise cleaning floors and carpets. |
| Scheduled cleaning |
Access to the areas to be cleaned, space to move between furniture and room for the docking station. |
If I want to delegate regular cleaning, I make sure the robot can move around and reach the areas that need cleaning. Around 20 % of consumers prioritise scheduled cleaning. |
| Emptying, consumables and noise |
How easy it is to empty, filter and brush maintenance, compatible consumables and noise levels in the mode you use. |
When cleaning often, I want to minimise handling and avoid disruptive noise in everyday use. Around 13 % of consumers prioritise easy maintenance and acceptable noise levels. |
| Spot cleaning |
Surfaces to be cleaned, accessories, dust container capacity and any existing solution for floors. |
If the floors are already taken care of and I mainly want to clean furniture or small messes, a handheld vacuum can be a useful addition. Around 7 % of consumers prioritise these quick touch-ups. |

Frequently asked questions
Is a handheld vacuum enough for a small home ?
Choose one as your only vacuum if your floors are already cleaned another way and you mainly want to touch up furniture or clear small messes. For a main vacuum, compare the model’s results on your flooring and check the accessories included with the version you’re considering.
What runtime and charging time should you check for a stick vacuum ?
Compare the time you need for your cleaning session with the runtime in the mode and with the brush you’ll use: the quoted maximum is generally achieved at low power. Check the charging time for the exact model separately; Dyson lists 5 h for the V8 Advanced and Bosch for the BCS711XXL, but these charging times don’t apply to all stick vacuums.
How can you cut down on emptying and maintenance ?
Compare how easy it is to access the bin or replace the bag, then check the maintenance needed for filters, brushes and consumables for the model you’re considering. A station can empty the bin on some robot vacuums, but it also takes up space. iRobot also recommends maintaining the wheels, brushes, sensors and charging contacts.
What should you check about consumables and repairability ?
Before buying, find out which bags, filters, brushes or batteries you’ll need and check they’re available for the model you’ve chosen. If the scheme applies to the new vacuum you’re buying in France, also check the repairability rating displayed in store or online. The ministries responsible for the ecological transition explain that it indicates repairability, not vacuuming performance.
Is a repairability rating compulsory for a new vacuum sold in France ?
Yes. In France, the rating must be displayed in shops and online for the vacuum categories covered, including corded, cordless and robot vacuums. The official guidance excludes, among other things, second-hand, refurbished or rented equipment. The rating relates to repairability and doesn’t tell you how well the model cleans.
