For bike commuting, electric scooter rides, or skateboarding sessions, the urban bike helmet has become an accessory that's as personal as it is essential. But with an overwhelming number of options, it's tough to navigate the marketing hype and identify genuinely useful features. Some models with stunning looks hide design flaws, while others, claiming to be universal, turn out to be uncomfortable or even dangerous. This guide is here to help you cut through the noise and pinpoint the criteria that truly make a difference for a successful purchase.
The market is flooded with helmets that look perfect in photos but are disappointing once on your head. Here are the most common traps to watch out for.
To make the right choice, focus on a few key technical criteria. These are the true guarantees of a helmet's quality and suitability for urban use.
This is the absolute basic?: check for the CE EN 1078 standard. It guarantees the helmet has successfully passed a series of European tests validating its shock absorption capacity, structural integrity, and chin strap strength. A certified bike helmet is therefore the foundation of your safety, whether you're on a bike, scooter, or skateboard.
A good helmet is one you forget you're wearing. To achieve this, three elements should be inspected?:
The urban jungle has its own rules. Two features stand out for their relevance?:

The golden rule is simple?: a helmet must be replaced after any impact, even if no damage is visible. Its internal polystyrene (EPS) structure is designed to absorb impact energy by deforming, a one-time process. In the absence of an impact, it is still advisable to replace it every 3 to 5 years, as the materials degrade over time due to UV exposure, sweat, and temperature changes.
In France, wearing a certified helmet is mandatory for children under 12 on a bike, whether they are the rider or a passenger. For adults on bikes, as well as for users of electric scooters and other Personal Light Electric Vehicles (PLEVs), a helmet is not (yet) mandatory, but it remains more recommended than ever for your safety.
For the outer shell, a soft cloth dampened with soapy water (using a neutral soap) works perfectly. Avoid solvents and other harsh chemicals. Most good helmets, like those in our selection, have removable inner pads. Simply hand-wash them in lukewarm, soapy water, rinse well, and let them air-dry completely before reinstalling them.
