Who is this advice for?

Anyone who needs to equip their home straight away

You’ll need somewhere to store food and a way to cook from day one. Then you can decide whether you also need to do your laundry there from the start. The order you buy things in depends on what’s already in the property and how you organise your day-to-day life.

Anyone with a small kitchen or utility room

You’ll need to balance dimensions with capacity. Compare a top-loading washing machine, a shallower appliance or a compact dishwasher with the space you actually have, allowing for doors to open fully.

Anyone moving into a partially equipped kitchen

Before choosing a built-in appliance or one that needs a water connection, check the space, any cabinet door and the existing connections. An apparently empty space isn’t enough to confirm that a particular model can be installed there.

What should you check before buying?

First, take stock of what’s in the property and measure the available spaces. Then decide which functions you’ll need straight away and which appliances can wait.

ConsiderationWhat to checkConsumers affected
Connections and installation Check the supply required for your chosen model. For an appliance that uses water, note where the water inlet and waste outlet are, and whether they’re accessible. If the appliance can’t be connected or installed in its intended space, I need to sort that out before ordering. Around 36% of consumers prioritise this practical consideration.
What you’ll need from day one Check which appliances are already there and work out what you need straight away for food storage, cooking and laundry. I want to be able to store food and prepare meals without buying appliances I can do without for now. This is a priority for around 29% of consumers.
Space and capacity Measure the available space and delivery route, then allow for doors to open and check the usable capacity. In a small kitchen or utility room, I’m looking for an appliance that will fit and suit the amount of laundry or washing-up I have. Space is the main consideration for around 21% of consumers.
Maintenance and expected lifespan Compare the care information for the exact model. If buying second-hand, check its condition and accessories. I’d rather be able to maintain the appliance and check its condition before committing, particularly if it’s been used before. Around 14% of consumers prioritise this.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Ordering before checking the connections

A hob, washing machine or dishwasher may fit the space you have in mind but still be incompatible with the existing connections.

For each space, note the dimensions, installation type and power supply, as well as the water inlet and waste outlet if needed. Compare your measurements with the instructions for the model you’ve chosen.

You may need to arrange plumbing, electrical or carpentry work separately: Electrolux’s pre-installation guide says its installers don’t carry out this work.

  • Choosing a compact model based on width alone

If it’s too deep, the door can’t open fully or the capacity is too small, the appliance may be impractical even if it fits in the space.

Compare all three dimensions, the clearances specified by the manufacturer and the capacity with how often you expect to use it.

  • Assuming a second-hand appliance is ready to install

The condition of the hoses, seals and accessories matters just as much as the dimensions when an appliance needs connecting in a new home.

Ask for the full model number, check what’s included and inspect the appliance and terms of sale before deciding.

Brands to consider by appliance

Bosch

Worth considering for a freestanding or built-in washing machine, or a fully integrated dishwasher.

  • Bosch lists these types of appliance in its French catalogue, with dimensions given on individual product pages.
  • Check the space, cabinet door and specifications for the model you choose: these vary from one model to another.

Electrolux

Worth a look if you’re comparing several appliance categories, including refrigeration, cooking and laundry.

  • Electrolux provides pre-installation information, manuals and spare parts for its appliances.
  • Installation services don’t cover any plumbing, electrical or carpentry work that may be needed. Check the terms for your chosen model.

Beko

Worth comparing for a freestanding, semi-integrated or fully integrated dishwasher.

  • Beko offers models in 45 cm and 60 cm sizes, which are worth considering for the space you have.
  • Capacity and the parts needed for integration vary by model, so check these before choosing a cabinet door or space.

Miele

Worth considering for integrated dishwashers in different sizes.

  • Miele’s French catalogue includes integrated models in 45 cm and other sizes.
  • A stated size alone doesn’t confirm that the space, cabinet door or connections in your home are compatible.

Appliances for a gradual set-up

These appliances meet refrigeration or laundry needs in a home you’re equipping. Check that they’ll fit your available space, and only consider a dishwasher if it suits the amount of washing-up you have and you have a suitable waste outlet.

Frequently asked questions

Which appliances should you buy first for an unfurnished home?

Start with what you need to store food and cook using the existing facilities, then decide what you need for laundry. First, check which appliances are already there to avoid buying anything unnecessarily.

What should you measure before ordering a large appliance?

Measure the space in width, height and depth, the delivery route and the clearance needed to open the door. For a built-in model, also check the space and cabinet door. For an appliance that needs connecting, note the available connections.

Can you plug an induction hob into a standard socket?

Don’t assume a standard socket is suitable for your chosen hob: the power supply it needs depends on the instructions and the existing installation. If you’re unsure about the available circuit, ask a qualified professional to check it before buying.

Will a 45 cm dishwasher meet my needs?

It may suit a narrow kitchen if its capacity matches the amount of washing-up you have. Que Choisir describes 45 cm models as typically holding 9 to 10 place settings. Also check the space needed to open the door and how often you expect to use it.

Does the legal guarantee also apply to a second-hand appliance?

Yes. According to the French Ministry of the Economy, if you buy a second-hand appliance from a professional seller in France, you can claim under the legal guarantee of conformity for two years, just as you can for a new item. Keep your proof of purchase and the product description. This guarantee covers goods that don’t conform to the description, not simply changing your mind.
