Type 2 Portable Charger: A Guide to Choosing the Right One

Switching to an electric or plug-in hybrid car unlocks a new level of freedom. But that freedom is only worthwhile if charging is simple and flexible. The Type 2 portable charger has emerged as the ideal solution: charge your car at home without a costly installation, on holiday, or simply keep one as a backup plan. The only problem is that the market is a jungle of products with tempting promises that can quickly turn into costly disappointments.

As the head of product selection at Joybuy, my mission is to help you see clearly. We've broken down the most common pitfalls and the essential criteria to check to make the right choice with complete peace of mind.

The 2 pitfalls to absolutely avoid when buying:

  1. Substandard Safety Standards: Many low-cost products cut corners on crucial certifications like the CE mark or basic electrical protections. Using such a device endangers not only your vehicle but also your home's electrical system and your own safety.
  2. Gimmicky "Smart" Features: An obscure mobile app or a temperamental Wi-Fi connection can turn a simple charge into a real headache. The priority must always be reliability and simplicity, not gadgets that inflate the price without adding any real value.

The Technical Criteria That Make All the Difference

To avoid any unpleasant surprises, a few technical parameters need to be examined closely. These are the true guarantors of a portable electric car charger's quality and suitability.

1. Power and Adjustable Charging Current

Most portable chargers for domestic sockets offer a maximum power of 3.5 kW on a single phase, which corresponds to a current of 16 A. This is the ideal compromise for an overnight charge without tripping the circuit breaker.

But the real game-changer is the ability to adjust the charging current. A charger that offers several levels (e.g., 8 A, 10 A, 13 A, 16 A) is a key advantage. Why?

  • For Safety: Are you plugging into a socket of unknown condition or one on an older circuit? Reducing the current to 8 or 10 A drastically limits the risk of overheating and tripping.
  • For Versatility: It allows you to adapt to any situation, whether at a campsite, in an old holiday home, or at a friend's house.

A good 16 A Type 2 charging cable must therefore offer this modularity.

2. Connectors and Compatibility

When it comes to connectors, the rule is simple and non-negotiable. Your mobile charging station must have two specific connectors:

  • Vehicle Side: a Type 2 connector (sometimes called Mennekes). This is the European standard for alternating current (AC) charging, adopted by almost all manufacturers (Renault, Peugeot, Tesla, Volkswagen, etc.).
  • Wall Socket Side: a Type F plug (known as Schuko). This is the standard domestic socket found throughout France and much of Europe. Steer clear of products supplied with low-quality adapters.

3. Protections and Weatherproof Rating (IP)

A portable EV charger is, by definition, exposed to the elements.

  • The Ingress Protection (IP) Rating: Aim for an IP66 rating, period. It guarantees that the housing is completely dust-tight and resistant to powerful water jets. A lower rating, like IP54, only protects against splashes and will prove insufficient in a heavy downpour.
  • Electrical Protections: The charger must include a full suite of safety features: protection against overvoltage, overheating, current leakage (Type A + DC 6mA differential), and a ground fault check. The CE mark is the bare minimum, certifying compliance with European Union standards.

Frequently Asked Questions about Portable EV Chargers

Can I use an extension cord with a portable electric car charger?

The answer is no. The use of an extension cord is strictly advised against by all manufacturers and electricians. An unsuitable extension cord, especially if the cable is too thin, creates a major risk of overheating, voltage drop (which slows down charging), and even fire. Always plug your charger directly into a compliant, grounded wall socket.

What is the lifespan of a Type 2 portable charger?

The lifespan obviously depends on the manufacturing quality and usage. A well-made, certified model used correctly will easily last for many years. A warranty of two years or more is an excellent indicator of the manufacturer's confidence in its product.

How long does it take to charge a car with a 3.5 kW charger?

A 3.5 kW charger can add about 20 to 25 kilometres of range per hour of charging. To fully charge a nearly empty 50 kWh battery, it will take between 14 and 15 hours. It's the perfect solution for topping up the battery overnight.
