Which households is it for?

Homes without an external duct or opening

You’re looking for a tumble dryer that can be used in a utility room, kitchen or another room without a connection to the outside. Condenser technologies are suitable for this setup, unlike vented models. UFC-Que Choisir makes this clear in its guide to tumble dryers.

Regular users who are mindful of electricity consumption

You dry clothes frequently and are happy to accept sometimes longer cycles to reduce electricity consumption: prioritise comparisons of heat-pump models.

People living in a small home or bathroom

If space is limited or the room is damp, check the room’s actual ventilation, the electrical safety zones for bathrooms and the installation requirements given in the instruction manual.

Priorities before buying

Heat-pump condenser dryer

Choose this if: you dry clothes regularly but cannot install an external duct and want to keep electricity consumption down.

Bear in mind: cycles are usually longer. Also check the filter, water tank or drain connection.

Standard condenser dryer

Consider this if: you definitely have no external outlet and drying speed matters more than energy efficiency.

Bear in mind: this technology generally uses more energy than a heat-pump dryer and requires the same installation checks.

Air-drying on a clothes airer

Choose this if: reducing electricity use is your priority and you have a sufficiently large, well-ventilated room.

Bear in mind: wet laundry increases indoor humidity. An MVHR extraction vent is particularly useful in a small room.

Priority What to check Your needs
Installation without external venting Choose a condenser tumble dryer; check the water collection tank or drain connection; consult the manual for clearance requirements and electrical connection details. I need to install the appliance without an opening or duct to the outside, while also arranging a solution for the condensed water.
Energy consumption and duration Compare kWh/100 cycles, the duration of the eco programme and the A to G energy label applicable in the EU since 1 July 2025. Compare models on a like-for-like basis. I want to limit electricity consumption, but I need to know whether longer cycles will fit in with my laundry routine.
Capacity, space and noise Match the capacity in kg to your usual loads; measure the height, width, depth and door opening; compare noise levels in dB(A). The tumble dryer must handle my usual laundry loads without blocking access or disturbing a nearby living area.
Fabrics and maintenance Look for moisture sensors, programmes suitable for delicate fabrics and easy access to the filter. Check the condenser maintenance instructions. I want to avoid over-drying delicate laundry and be able to carry out regular appliance maintenance.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Confusing “no external duct” with “no installation requirements”

A condenser tumble dryer does not need a duct to the outside, but it still requires a suitable electricity supply, a stable floor, adequate clearances and a way to manage condensed water.

Measure the space and check the manual for the door opening, electrical connection, water tank and the option of connecting a drain hose.

  • Choosing based solely on the energy label letter

Since 1 July 2025, the labels on tumble dryers sold in the European Union have used the A to G scale. An old A++ rating, for example, cannot be compared directly with a letter from the new scale.

Compare kWh/100 cycles, eco programme duration, noise and capacity using labels based on the same scale.

  • Underestimating the duration of heat-pump cycles

UFC-Que Choisir states that heat-pump tumble dryers use little energy, while standard condenser and vented models generally dry clothes faster.

Compare the eco programme duration and the conditions of the quick programme, particularly if several large loads need to be dried one after another.

  • Regularly air-drying laundry in a small, poorly ventilated room

ADEME points out that drying laundry indoors releases a great deal of moisture, which can harm thermal comfort and indoor air quality.

Choose a large, well-ventilated room or one fitted with an MVHR extraction vent.

What to know about the brands

Bosch

Bosch’s range includes heat-pump tumble dryers, including 8 kg models with water drainage and, depending on the reference, a self-cleaning condenser.

  • For the WQG24502FR, Bosch states an 8 kg capacity, a noise level of 61 dB(A), a self-cleaning condenser and a water drain hose.
  • Check the installation requirements and whether the drain connection is compatible with the model you choose.

Electrolux

Electrolux offers condenser tumble dryers with heat-pump technology, drying sensors and an 8 kg capacity, depending on the model.

  • The French product pages for the EW7H5125SU and EW8H4823RE specify condenser technology, an 8 kg capacity and sensors.
  • Electrolux states an operating temperature of between 5 °C and 35 °C for the EW7H5125SU. Check the applicable range for the exact model and your room.

LG

LG offers heat-pump tumble dryers with moisture sensors, including models with an 8 kg capacity.

  • For the RH8N15WH, LG specifies a heat pump, a moisture sensor and R290 refrigerant.
  • According to LG, results vary depending on actual usage conditions. Check the dimensions, maintenance access and the requirements in the manual.

Samsung

Samsung offers heat-pump tumble dryers with sensor-controlled drying and options designed to reduce creasing, depending on the programme.

  • For the DV80TA020DH/EF, Samsung specifies an 8 kg capacity, dimensions of 600 × 850 × 600 mm, Optimal Dry sensors and a 2-in-1 filter.
  • Compare the model’s current energy label rather than treating an old energy rating as directly equivalent.

Frequently asked questions

Can you install a condenser tumble dryer without an external air vent?

Yes. UFC-Que Choisir states that a condenser tumble dryer, whether standard or heat-pump, does not require a connection to the outside, unlike a vented model. The location, electrical connection, maintenance and management of condensed water must still be checked in the manual.

Does the tumble dryer have to be connected to a drain?

No. A condenser tumble dryer generally collects water in a tank that needs emptying, while some models offer a drain hose. Check the product details and manual for the exact reference. Bosch, for example, specifies a water drain hose for the WQG24502FR.

Can a tumble dryer be installed in a bathroom in France?

This depends on its position in relation to the bath or shower and on the electrical installation. The NF C 15-100 standard defines protection zones in bathrooms. If the appliance is near a water source or the circuit is modified, have the installation checked by a qualified electrician.

Why don’t old energy ratings always correspond to the new ones?

Since 1 July 2025, tumble dryers displayed in shops and online in the European Union have used an A to G scale. Compare the current label, kWh/100 cycles, eco programme duration and noise level rather than comparing an old A++ rating with a new letter.

Can you dry laundry on an airer in a room without a window?

This solution requires effective ventilation. ADEME recommends drying laundry in a large, well-ventilated room or one fitted with an MVHR extraction vent, preferably humidity-controlled, to manage indoor humidity more effectively.
