What to check before buying
Start by checking what can be installed in the room, then compare drying performance and consumption information from labels using the same rating scale.
| Priority |
What to check |
Your needs |
| Room and ventilation |
Check whether an opening or external duct is available. For a condenser appliance, check the installation requirements and whether the condensate can potentially be connected to a drain. |
I want to avoid an appliance that requires an unavailable external vent, or reduce the need to empty the water tank manually where a direct connection is possible. |
| Consumption and cycle time |
Compare energy consumption in kWh and the duration of the ECO programme. Only compare energy ratings using the same A to G scale. |
I am looking for a balance between electricity consumption and how long it takes before I can put the laundry away or use it again. |
| Drying capacity |
Compare the kilograms that can actually be dried with your usual load. For a washer-dryer, check the washing and drying capacities separately. |
I do not want to remove part of a large load before drying, or have the next wash held up by a two-in-one appliance. |
| Space saving |
Measure the available space and appliance depth. Stacking requires a kit approved for both model references and their dimensions. |
I want to free up floor space without placing a tumble dryer on a washing machine without a compatible fixing system. |

Frequently asked questions
Can I install a tumble dryer without an external duct?
Yes. A condenser tumble dryer, including a heat-pump model, does not need an external connection. A vented model, on the other hand, requires an opening or duct to release hot, damp air; you must also follow the installation requirements in the instruction manual.
Do I need to empty the water tank of a condenser tumble dryer?
Yes, condensed water is generally collected in a tank. Some models support a direct connection to a trap or drain using a compatible hose or kit: check whether this is possible for the model you choose.
Can a washer-dryer dry a whole load of laundry?
Not automatically, because its drying capacity is lower than its washing capacity. To run a wash and dry cycle without removing any laundry, the washed load must stay within the stated drying capacity; Que Choisir says this function is generally slower than using a separate tumble dryer.
Can I place a tumble dryer on top of my washing machine?
Only if both appliances and the stacking kit are declared compatible. Requirements may include front-loading appliances, a specific depth range or certain model references; do not simply place the tumble dryer on the washing machine without a suitable fixing system.
How can I compare the energy used by two tumble dryers?
Compare appliances using labels based on the same A to G scale, then look at energy consumption in kWh and cycle duration. European Regulation 2023/2534 governs the energy labelling of household tumble dryers.
