Which households is it for?

Homes without a duct or external opening

If you need a separate tumble dryer but cannot vent air outside, choose a condenser model and plan how you will manage the condensed water. UFC-Que Choisir states that a vented model requires an external opening or access to an air-ventilation duct.

Households regularly drying large loads of laundry

A heat-pump model is a good choice if you want the drying capacity to be closer to that of your washing machine while keeping an eye on energy consumption. However, you will need to accept that cycles are often longer and follow the maintenance instructions for your chosen model.

Small homes with room for just one appliance

A washer-dryer can solve the lack of space, provided you choose it based on its drying capacity rather than its washing capacity alone. The Electrolux and Bosch models listed in their French product specifications indicate capacities of 8/5 kg and 9/6 kg respectively for washing and drying.

Buying criteria for drying laundry without an external vent

Heat pump

Choose this if: you have room for a separate appliance and no usable external opening or duct.

Bear in mind: cycles are generally longer, so check the Eco capacity, noise level, kWh/100 cycles and water drainage.

Traditional condenser

Consider this if: you want a solution that is technically compatible with having no external duct and are comparing the available models.

Compare: energy consumption and the current energy label, as the old classes cannot be read directly alongside the A to G scale used since 1 July 2025.

Washer-dryer

Choose this if: your home genuinely has room for only one appliance.

Accept: a lower drying load than washing load, plus wash-and-dry cycles that can last several hours.

Priority What to check Your needs
Compatibility with the room Choose condenser technology. Check the clearances, ventilation and electrical connection specified in the instructions. I want to dry laundry indoors without installing a duct to the outside. A vented tumble dryer is not suitable without an external opening or ventilation duct.
Energy consumption and label Compare Eco kWh/100 cycles, Eco capacity and Eco duration on the current label. Do not automatically equate an old A+++/A++ class with a letter on the A to G scale. I want to compare energy consumption on a clear basis across recent models. Since 1 July 2025, tumble dryer energy labels have used the A to G scale, according to Gifam.
Water management and maintenance Identify the tank, any supplied hose or compatible kit. Also check the filters and the required maintenance tasks. I would rather not empty a tank if my installation allows a connection to a drain. A drain hose removes condensate, not hot air.
Capacity, duration and noise Compare the Eco programme capacity, duration and noise level. For a washer-dryer, check the washing and drying capacities separately. I want to dry my usual loads without running multiple cycles or disturbing other occupants. If the appliance is near bedrooms, the noise level deserves particular attention.

Mistakes to avoid before buying

  • Confusing air venting with condensate drainage

A water drain hose does not turn a condenser tumble dryer into a vented appliance. Without an external outlet, it is the condenser air circuit that makes the appliance suitable for the room.

First, rule out vented tumble dryers. Then check whether the condenser model uses a tank, a supplied hose or a drainage kit compatible with your installation.

  • Choosing a washer-dryer based solely on its washing capacity

The drying load is often lower, which may mean splitting a load before drying. A complete wash-and-dry programme can also take several hours.

Compare the drying capacity, wash-and-dry duration and noise level before choosing a 2-in-1 solution. If you have the space, a separate appliance is still better suited to frequent full loads.

  • Comparing an old A+++ class with a current A to G class

The new energy label, applied to tumble dryers since 1 July 2025, replaces the old scale. A letter alone therefore cannot be used to compare the two systems directly.

For new models, check Eco kWh/100 cycles, Eco capacity, Eco duration, noise level and the condensation efficiency class where it is displayed.

  • Assuming a self-cleaning condenser eliminates all maintenance

Lint filters remain important maintenance components, even when the condenser has an automatic cleaning function or particular protection.

Read the instructions for the exact model, identify the filters that need cleaning and check whether the condenser is manual, self-cleaning or protected by a base filter.

A guide to the featured brands

Bosch

Bosch’s French range includes heat-pump tumble dryers and washer-dryers, making it possible to compare a separate appliance with a 2-in-1 solution.

  • For the WQG2450SFR, Bosch states a capacity of 9 kg, a noise level of 64 dB, a water drainage hose and a self-cleaning condenser.
  • For the WNG24402FR washer-dryer, Bosch’s specification states 9 kg for washing versus 6 kg for wash-and-dry: these figures apply to this specific model.

Miele

Miele offers heat-pump tumble dryers here with condensate collection options using either a tank or a drain, depending on the model.

  • Miele presents the TEA525WP as an 8 kg heat-pump model with an integrated condensate drainage kit.
  • Claims about fabric care and longevity come from the manufacturer; above all, check the specifications and maintenance requirements of the model you choose.

Electrolux

Electrolux’s French range covers heat-pump tumble dryers, drainage accessories and washer-dryers.

  • The EDHF2812WE specification lists an 8 kg heat-pump model, 66 dB and 128 kWh/100 cycles.
  • The drainage kit and drying capacity must be checked for each model, particularly by PNC number for compatible accessories.

Frequently asked questions

Does a condenser tumble dryer need to be connected to the outside?

No. Traditional condenser and heat-pump tumble dryers can be installed without an external connection. By contrast, UFC-Que Choisir states that a vented tumble dryer requires an external opening or access to a ventilation duct. You should also follow the installation instructions for your model.

Do you need to empty the water tank of a heat-pump tumble dryer?

Yes, when the appliance uses its condensate tank and is not connected to a drain. Some models have a drainage hose or accept a compatible kit; the Electrolux E2YH01 kit is specifically designed to drain water into a sink, U-bend or waste pipe, subject to compatibility.

How do you read the current energy label for a tumble dryer in France?

Since 1 July 2025, tumble dryer labels have used the A to G scale. They show, among other details, consumption in kWh per 100 Eco cycles, the maximum capacity of the Eco programme, its duration, noise level and, for condenser models, a water-collection performance class.

Why is the drying capacity of a washer-dryer important?

It may be lower than the washing capacity, which sometimes means splitting a load before drying. The French specifications for the Electrolux EW7IW2856BG and Bosch WNG24402FR list 8 kg washing capacity and 5 kg drying capacity, and 9 kg washing capacity and 6 kg wash-and-dry capacity respectively.
