Which households is it for ?

Flat-dwellers without an external vent

You need mechanical drying, but your home does not allow moist air to be vented outside. A condenser appliance is suitable for this setup, provided you check the room’s ventilation and how the condensed water is handled.

Households that often dry large loads

You want to keep energy use down while drying an amount of laundry that matches your washing machine. A heat pump deserves particular consideration if longer cycles fit comfortably into your routine.

Users with a small utility room

As well as checking the appliance’s width, verify the room’s ventilation, the temperature specified in the manual, noise levels, access to the water tank and whether a stacking kit can be used.

Buying priorities

Heat pump condenser

Choose this if : you regularly dry laundry without having an external vent and want to keep an eye on energy consumption.

Bear in mind : cycles can be longer, while ventilation, temperature and drainage requirements depend on the model.

Traditional ventless condenser with a heating element

Consider this if : you come across an appliance placed on the market before the European rules changed in 2025.

Important point : this technology can use more energy and is not usually the route to take when buying new in France.

Air-drying on a clothes airer

Choose this if : you do not want to buy an appliance and can arrange your laundry over a longer period.

Bear in mind : a clothes airer takes up space, and you need to assess the room’s ventilation based on your habits.

Priority What to check Your needs
Installation without an external vent Choose a condenser model. Also compare the condensation efficiency class and read the installation requirements in the manual. I want to install the appliance in a room without ducting or an opening to the outside, without overlooking the room’s ventilation.
Energy use and duration Compare consumption in kWh/100 cycles and the duration of the eco programme on the same label. Since July 2025, the energy label ranges from A to G, according to the European Commission. I want to reduce electricity consumption while keeping the cycle duration compatible with the pace of my laundry routine.
Useful capacity Match the capacity in kg of dry laundry to your usual loads. Check the synthetics capacity separately when it is specified. A full wash load should not need to be split, but I do not want an unnecessarily large drum either.
Condensed water and the room Check access to the water collection tank, whether the appliance can be connected to a waste outlet and whether a kit is compatible. Also check the temperature and ventilation requirements in the manual. I want to avoid a hard-to-reach tank, a poorly ventilated room or an incompatible connection making everyday use more difficult.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Confusing “no external vent” with “no installation requirements”

A condenser tumble dryer eliminates the need for external ducting, but you still need to allow for sufficient space, access to the tank, a power supply, ventilation and the temperature conditions specified for the model.

Measure the space and door clearance, then read the installation section in the exact model’s manual before ordering.

  • Choosing based solely on the old A++ or A+++ rating

Tumble dryer labels have used the A to G scale since 1 July 2025. Directly comparing an old rating with a current one can give a misleading impression.

Compare appliances using the same current scale, then look at consumption in kWh/100 cycles, eco programme duration, capacity and noise levels.

  • Assuming a drainage connection is included or compatible

According to Whirlpool, connecting a condenser tumble dryer to a water outlet depends on the model. Unless compatibility has been confirmed, the collection tank will need to be emptied after cycles.

Check the manual and product details to see whether the hose is supplied, whether a kit is required and whether your water outlet is accessible.

A drainage kit may be a separate accessory, depending on the model.

  • Choosing a capacity without considering the amount you actually dry

Capacity is expressed in kg of dry laundry and can vary by programme. The permitted synthetics load may be smaller than the cotton load.

Match the cotton capacity to your usual laundry loads and check the synthetics capacity if you regularly dry these fabrics.

Brand guide

Bosch

Bosch offers heat pump tumble dryers, including some models with a self-cleaning condenser, half-load option or water drainage specified in their features.

  • For the WQG2451SFR, Bosch specifies features including Auto Dry, a half-load option, a wool basket and a water drainage hose.
  • These features apply to this specific model; the manufacturer also requires you to follow the temperature and ventilation conditions in its manual.

Electrolux

The range includes 8 kg heat pump tumble dryers that highlight mixed-fabric programmes and sensor-controlled drying adjustments, depending on the model.

  • For the EW6HI5110RO, Electrolux lists MixCare, SensiCare, an 8 kg capacity and consumption of 119 kWh/100 cycles.
  • These details do not describe the entire range: check the product information sheet, dimensions and manual for your chosen model.

Whirlpool

Whirlpool sells condenser and heat pump tumble dryers, as well as solutions for draining condensed water.

  • The brand offers, among other things, a drainage kit designed for certain condenser or heat pump tumble dryers.
  • According to Whirlpool, whether the appliance can be connected to a water outlet depends on the model; do not assume that a hose is included or compatible.

Frequently asked questions

Can I install a tumble dryer without an external vent ?

Yes, provided you choose a condenser appliance, including a heat pump model. UFC-Que Choisir and the European Commission state that extracted water can be collected in a tank or, where the model allows it, directed to a water outlet. A vented model is not suitable for this setup.

Do I have to connect the condensed water to a drain ?

No. A condenser tumble dryer can store the water in a tank that you empty. A connection can save you this step, but it depends on the model, its manual and sometimes a compatible accessory.

Is a heat pump always better than a traditional condenser model ?

For a new purchase and regular use, a heat pump is generally the solution to choose when longer cycles are acceptable. The European Commission specifies that only heat pump tumble dryers may be placed on the Union market from 1 July 2025; however, appliances placed on the market before this date may still be offered from existing stock.

What temperature and ventilation should the room have ?

Check the manual for your chosen model before installation. For example, the Bosch WQG2451SFR manual specifies an ambient temperature of between 15 °C and 30 °C and requires the installation area to be ventilated when air circulation is insufficient; this range does not automatically apply to other appliances.

Which energy label should I compare in France ?

For tumble dryers sold in shops or online since 1 July 2025, compare the A to G energy scale. Also look at consumption in kWh/100 cycles, programme duration, capacity, noise and condensation efficiency between comparable appliances.
