Who are these options for?

Just one space

If you can only fit one appliance in your home, a washer-dryer lets you wash and then dry your laundry without moving it between machines. UFC-Que Choisir reminds buyers that the load must stay within the drying capacity, which is usually lower than the washing capacity.

Frequent drying

If you can fit two appliances and dry laundry regularly, compare heat pump tumble dryers by capacity and programme duration.

A room prone to damp

In a small or poorly ventilated room, follow the model’s installation instructions. Electrolux says that a room that is too small or poorly ventilated can encourage condensation.

Which factors should you prioritise?

In a home in France without an external vent, your choice mainly depends on the space available, how often you do laundry and the conditions in the room.

Heat pump tumble dryer

Consider this if: you have room for a separate appliance and dry laundry regularly.

Bear in mind: drying is generally slower than with a conventional condenser model, according to UFC-Que Choisir.

Conventional condenser tumble dryer

Consider this if: speed matters more to you than electricity use, and the specific model on offer meets the applicable requirements.

Check: UFC-Que Choisir describes these models as generally having shorter cycles, but using more electricity than heat pump models. Since 1 July 2025, the European Commission has restricted the placing of new household tumble dryers concerned on the market to heat pump models.

Washer-dryer

Consider this if: you only have room for one appliance and want to run wash and dry cycles back to back without moving your laundry.

Bear in mind: drying capacity is lower than washing capacity. UFC-Que Choisir also reports that many models have longer cycles and use water during drying.

Factor What to check Who should prioritise it
Space and transferring laundry Width, depth and door opening; separate washing and drying capacities. If I only have room for one appliance, I want to wash and then dry without moving the laundry, as long as the load is within the drying capacity. Around 33% of consumers prioritise saving space and running consecutive cycles.
Energy use and running costs Compare electricity use and programme duration on a like-for-like basis. For a washer-dryer, check water use for the full cycle too. If I dry laundry often, I want to compare the energy used by the cycles I actually run, rather than looking at washing alone. Around 27% of consumers put running costs first.
Laundry volume and frequency Drying capacity in kg and the duration of a programme suited to your laundry. If I do back-to-back loads or wash bulky items, I check how much laundry can be dried and how long the drum will be in use. Around 20% of consumers prioritise laundry volume and cycle frequency.
Ventilation and fitting Instructions in the manual, room ventilation and access to the filters, tank or drain. If the room is small or poorly ventilated, I check the model’s installation requirements before choosing where to put it. Around 20% of consumers prioritise whether their room is suitable.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing a washer-dryer based only on its washing capacity

The maximum load for washing may not be the same as the load the appliance can dry in the same cycle.

Compare both capacities and check the duration of the full cycle. If the load exceeds the drying capacity, expect to remove some laundry before drying.

  • Assuming that no external vent means the room does not need airing

A condenser tumble dryer does not need an exhaust hose to the outside, but a room that is too small or poorly ventilated can encourage condensation, according to Electrolux.

Check the model’s manual and the ventilation requirements for the space before installing it.

  • Comparing energy use or labels without checking the cycle

Figures for a wash-only cycle do not describe a wash-and-dry cycle. The EU energy label for the tumble dryers concerned changed from 1 July 2025. The old ratings are not directly comparable with current ones (European Commission).

Compare equivalent cycles and check the A to G label that applies to the tumble dryers concerned, rather than relying on an old rating.

Brands to consider by appliance type

Bosch

Worth considering for a separate heat pump tumble dryer, particularly if the dimensions and capacity of the WTH83V01FF suit your space.

  • Bosch Electroménager France lists the WTH83V01FF as having an 8 kg capacity, dimensions of 842 × 598 × 613 mm and AutoDry.
  • The condenser on this model is not self-cleaning.

LG

An option to consider if you want to combine washing and drying in a single appliance.

  • LG’s product information for the F964R56MBRS lists a 9 kg washing capacity and a 6 kg drying capacity.
  • Check that the drying capacity suits your loads: on this model, it is lower than the washing capacity.

Beko

Worth looking at if you are comparing conventional condenser models. Check the specifications of the appliance on offer.

  • The product information for the DCB816W describes an 8 kg condenser tumble dryer with a water tank, filter and condenser maintenance indicator.
  • These specifications apply to the DCB816W and do not necessarily apply to other Beko models.

Electrolux

An option to consider for heat pump tumble dryers and model-specific installation guidance.

  • Electrolux France lists the YW6HI841DC as having an 8 kg capacity.
  • Electrolux support warns that a room that is too small or poorly ventilated can encourage condensation. Check the manual for the model you choose.

Frequently asked questions

Can you install a tumble dryer in a closed room if there is no external vent?

A condenser tumble dryer does not need an air vent to the outside, but you still need to check the ventilation. Electrolux says that a room that is too small or poorly ventilated can encourage condensation. Check the manual for your model, as installation requirements vary by appliance.

How can you run wash and dry cycles back to back in a washer-dryer?

To run both cycles without removing any laundry, make sure the load is within the drying capacity from the outset, as this is lower than the washing capacity. Otherwise, remove some of the laundry before drying and check the water and drainage connections specified for the model.

Which energy use figures should you compare on the label?

For a washer-dryer, distinguish between figures for washing alone and those for the full wash-and-dry cycle, including electricity, water and duration. For the tumble dryers concerned, use the A to G label that has applied since 1 July 2025, rather than directly comparing an old A+++ rating with a current one (European Commission).

Can a conventional condenser tumble dryer still be placed on the market in France?

Since 1 July 2025, EU requirements for the household tumble dryers concerned have restricted the placing of new appliances on the market to heat pump models (European Commission). This rule alone does not mean that an appliance already on the market is prohibited from being bought. Check the terms of the specific offer with the seller.

What should you check for maintenance and after-sales support?

Check the manual for instructions on accessing and maintaining the filters, tank and, depending on the model, condenser. If you buy from a professional seller in France, the seller is responsible for the statutory guarantee of conformity. According to the DGCCRF, claims under this guarantee must be brought within two years of delivery of the goods. A commercial guarantee is optional.
