Buying priorities
Start with the volume you want to dry, then check the available space, the label information and the maintenance requirements.

What to check |
Your needs |
| Drying capacity |
Compare the capacity of a dedicated tumble dryer with your usual laundry volume. With a washer-dryer, check the washing and wash-and-dry capacities separately. |
I want to dry bed linen, towels and everyday laundry without removing part of the load or running several half-loads. |
| Energy use and label |
For a tumble dryer, note the weighted energy consumption per cycle, eco programme duration, capacity, noise level and condensation efficiency. For a combined appliance, read the figures for the wash-and-dry cycle. |
I want to compare the running cost for the cycle I will actually use, without relying on an old energy rating. |
| Humidity and condensed water |
Check condensation efficiency, the collection tank and whether a direct connection to the drain is possible when the model supports it. For a drying rack, use a well-ventilated room or provide extraction. |
I want to avoid adding humidity to a small living space while minimising the need to handle water. |
| Maintenance and usage pattern |
Check the required care for the filter, tank, condenser and seals. Also look at the eco programme duration at full and half load where this is provided. |
I want an appliance whose cleaning requirements and cycle times fit around my daily routine. |

Frequently asked questions
Does a heat-pump tumble dryer need to be connected to an outdoor vent?
No. A heat-pump condenser tumble dryer works without a vent to the outside: the extracted water is condensed and then collected in a tank or drained through a hose, depending on the model. Check that the hose is supplied and that your installation allows this connection.
Why is a washer-dryer’s drying capacity important?
It determines how much laundry can be dried in one go. UFC-Que Choisir points out that this capacity is lower than the washing capacity, so a full load may need to be reduced before drying.
Which energy label should I look for on a new tumble dryer in France?
For covered domestic tumble dryers, the A to G scale has applied since 1 July 2025, according to the European Commission. Do not compare an old A+++ label directly with the new scale. Also check capacity, weighted energy consumption, eco duration, noise level, condensation efficiency and repairability.
Can I continue drying laundry on an indoor drying rack?
Yes, provided you have a sufficiently large, well-ventilated room or one fitted with an extraction vent. ADEME states that air-drying laundry releases a significant amount of moisture into indoor air; if the drying rack permanently takes up space in your home, a drying appliance may be better suited to your needs.
Is a conventional condenser tumble dryer still a standard new option?
Not for a domestic tumble dryer newly placed on the European Union market since 1 July 2025: EU rules then require heat-pump technology. A vented-resistance appliance may still be found second-hand, as old stock or among older models; check its market launch date and label.
