Which households is it for?

Households that often dry full loads

If you have room for a dedicated appliance and want to avoid regularly drying clothes indoors, a heat-pump tumble dryer could be a good choice, although its cycles can sometimes take longer. UFC-Que Choisir and Guide Topten France highlight this technology for its lower electricity consumption compared with models using heating elements.

People living in small homes with space for just one appliance

A washer-dryer can free up space when only one appliance is possible. However, check the depth, connections and, above all, the drying capacity, which remains lower than the washing capacity according to UFC-Que Choisir.

People concerned about indoor humidity

When laundry is difficult to dry naturally, maintain good overall ventilation in your home and choose an appliance that is suitable for the room and complies with its instructions. ADEME recommends a large, well-ventilated room or a room fitted with mechanical ventilation extraction for laundry that is still being dried naturally.

Buying priorities

Heat-pump tumble dryer

Consider it: for regular drying with a dedicated appliance, without ducting to the outside.

Compare: cycles can take longer, so check the Eco data for the specific model.

Standard condenser tumble dryer

Consider it: if you want a dedicated appliance without external venting.

Compare: according to Guide Topten France, this technology uses more electricity than a heat-pump model.

Washer-dryer

Consider it: when one appliance must handle both washing and drying.

Accept: a smaller drying load and longer cycles than with a dedicated tumble dryer.

Priority What to check Your needs
Room and installation Check the dimensions, clearances, power socket, stability and installation instructions. A vented model requires an external opening or suitable ducting; a condenser model does not. I need to be able to install the appliance in the available room without creating an external vent that does not exist.
Actual drying capacity For a washer-dryer, compare the washing and drying capacities separately in kg. Also check the depth and door opening. I want to dry my usual amount of laundry without having to remove part of the load before the cycle every time.
Duration and consumption Compare kWh/100 cycles, the duration and capacity of the Eco programme, as well as the noise level. For a washer-dryer, distinguish between the washing data and the wash-and-dry cycle data. I am choosing between faster drying and lower electricity consumption for regular use.
Home ventilation Keep your home generally and continuously ventilated. If laundry needs to dry naturally, choose a large, well-ventilated room or one with mechanical ventilation extraction. I want to avoid leaving wet laundry to dry in a poorly ventilated room. ADEME recommends these precautions when drying laundry naturally.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing a washer-dryer based only on its washing capacity

The drying load is smaller than the washing load. For example, a machine advertised as washing 10 kg may only dry 6 kg at a time, meaning a full load has to be split.

Always compare both capacities in kg and start with the amount of laundry you want to dry in one go.

  • Assuming that no external vent means you can skip installation checks

A condenser tumble dryer does not need external ducting, but the room, ambient temperature, dimensions, connections and any stacking arrangement are still crucial.

Measure the space, allow room for the door to open and consult the instructions for your chosen model. Only stack the appliance using a compatible kit approved by the manufacturer.

  • Comparing only with the old A+++ rating

Since 1 July 2025, tumble dryer energy labels have used the A to G scale. An old rating cannot be compared directly with the new scale.

Ask for the current label and compare kWh/100 cycles, Eco capacity and Eco duration on a like-for-like basis. GIFAM explains that consumption is shown for 100 cycles of the Eco programme.

  • Treating a vented tumble dryer as a universal solution

This type of appliance requires genuine external venting and uses more electricity than heat-pump models, according to Guide Topten France.

Rule out this option if no external opening or suitable ducting is available, and do not alter your home's ventilation without qualified advice.

Brand guide

Bosch

In France, Bosch offers a range of heat-pump tumble dryers, including 8 and 9 kg models, with dedicated product pages.

  • Bosch describes its ActiveAir technology as a closed-circuit system operating at a lower temperature.
  • The electricity savings claimed by the brand should be checked against the label and product details for the model you choose.
  • Stacking requires a suitable connection kit and appliances that the manufacturer has declared compatible.

Electrolux

In France, Electrolux sells condenser tumble dryers with heat-pump technology, with fabric programmes and installation information varying by model.

  • Electrolux's product details for the EWHE6824DB model state an 8 kg capacity and consumption of 119 kWh/100 cycles.
  • These figures apply to this specific model and do not describe the range as a whole.
  • Check the energy rating, cycle duration and installation requirements for the model you choose.

Beko

Beko offers washer-dryers for homes where one appliance needs to wash and dry the laundry.

  • Beko states that the B3YDFT51044W model can wash 10 kg and dry 6 kg.
  • The difference between the washing and drying capacities needs to be considered when planning loads.
  • Consumption data for the wash-and-dry cycle should be compared on a model-by-model basis.

Frequently asked questions

Can I install a vented tumble dryer in a flat without an external outlet?

No. A vented tumble dryer requires an opening to the outside or ducting to expel hot, moisture-laden air, according to UFC-Que Choisir. If this is not possible, consider a condenser model or a washer-dryer, after checking the available space and the instructions.

Can a condenser tumble dryer be placed in any room?

No. Not needing external ducting does not remove the need to check stability, dimensions, electrical connections and the temperature conditions specified in the instructions. For example, Electrolux states a range of 5 to 35 °C for its EWHE6824DB model, but this range does not automatically apply to other appliances.

Can a washer-dryer dry the whole load after washing?

Not necessarily. The drying capacity is lower than the washing capacity, so a load may need to be divided before drying. Always compare both values in kg; for example, the Beko B3YDFT51044W product details state 10 kg for washing and 6 kg for drying.

What should I compare on a tumble dryer's new energy label?

Compare the A to G scale, the Eco programme's kWh/100 cycles, maximum Eco capacity, programme duration and noise level. For condenser tumble dryers, also check the water-condensation efficiency class. GIFAM states that this new label has been displayed since 1 July 2025.

Do French regulations require homes to have ventilation?

Yes. The French decree of 24 March 1982 provides for homes to have general and continuous ventilation, at least where windows need to remain closed. However, this requirement alone does not determine whether an appliance can be installed in a particular room: the manufacturer's instructions for the chosen model must still be followed.
