Who is this solution suitable for ?

People living in flats without a balcony or drying room

If laundry often dries inside your home, a condenser solution means you do not need an external vent hose. The available space and humidity management remain essential considerations, as highlighted by UFC-Que Choisir, ADEME and Miele.

Households running full loads of washing one after another

For regularly drying large loads, compare the drying capacity with your usual laundry volume. On a washer-dryer, the drying load may be smaller than the washing load, as shown in Electrolux and Samsung specifications.

Small homes with room for only one appliance

A washer-dryer can wash and dry consecutively in a single appliance. However, check its drying limit and the length of combined programmes before choosing it for frequent use.

Buying priorities

Heat pump

Best if : you dry laundry frequently and have room for a separate appliance.

Bear in mind : cycles can be longer than those of a conventional condenser tumble dryer.

Conventional condenser

Worth considering : if shorter drying times matter more in your routine.

Check : the room’s ventilation, the installation requirements and the consumption data for the exact model.

Washer-dryer

Choose this when : only one appliance can be installed in your home.

Plan for : a drying capacity that is often lower than the washing capacity.

Priority What to check Your needs
Humidity and room Compare condenser appliances, the condensation efficiency shown on the label, and how water is managed through a tank or drain. Also confirm the ventilation and installation requirements in the manual. I want to limit the humidity caused by drying clothes in a poorly ventilated room, without having to connect a hose to the outside.
Energy use and cycle length Compare the kWh per 100 Eco cycles, the Eco programme duration and the Eco capacity on current labels. These indicators describe the Eco programme for the model concerned. For frequent drying, I want to keep energy use under control; if laundry needs to be turned around quickly, cycle length matters too.
Drying capacity Check the maximum drying capacity in kg. On a washer-dryer, compare the washing and drying capacities separately. I want to dry my usual load without removing some of the laundry or running multiple cycles.
Noise and maintenance Check the noise level in dB, access to the filters and water tank, and the maintenance instructions. Check for programmes suitable for small loads if this is part of how you use the appliance. The appliance will be close to a living room or bedroom, and I need to be able to maintain it within the available space.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Looking only at the washing capacity

A washer-dryer may wash 9 kg but dry only 6 kg. A large load may therefore need to be split or dried in several cycles.

Base your choice on the drying capacity and your usual load size. If you regularly dry full loads of washing, a separate appliance may be more suitable.

  • Comparing energy classes from different label systems

Since 1 July 2025, the scale for tumble dryers has run from A to G. An old class including A+, A++ or A+++ cannot be compared directly with a recent specification sheet.

Instead, compare kWh per 100 Eco cycles, the Eco duration, the Eco capacity and the noise indication on the current labels for the exact model, in line with GIFAM and the European Commission.

  • Assuming that all condenser tumble dryers perform equally well in a small room

They do not require an external vent hose, but installation, heat output, maintenance and the drainage of condensed water can vary from one model to another.

Measure the available space, check access to the socket and the tank or drain, then read the installation requirements in the manual before setting up the appliance.

  • Choosing a heat-pump model without checking cycle times

Heat-pump tumble dryers generally use less energy, while conventional models may retain a speed advantage. This trade-off can matter in a household that runs several loads of washing in succession.

Check the Eco programme duration and, for small urgent loads, review the conditions for the quick programme rather than assuming it replaces a full cycle.

Guide to the brands mentioned

Bosch

The French range mentioned includes heat-pump and conventional condenser tumble dryers, allowing you to compare these two approaches across different models.

  • Bosch specifications for the WQG133DTFR and WTN85V08FF each state an 8 kg capacity.
  • Noise levels, energy costs and the features listed are specific to each model and do not represent the entire range.

Electrolux

The freestanding EW7W3924SV washer-dryer is an example of an option for homes that can accommodate only one appliance.

  • According to Electrolux specifications, this model has a 9 kg washing capacity and a 6 kg drying capacity.
  • The difference between the two capacities means large loads need to be planned carefully; the displayed Eco 40-60 combined cycle can take 7 h 45.

Samsung

Samsung offers, among other options, a 9 + 6 kg washer-dryer with capacity and dimensions published for the French market.

  • The WD90T634DBH/S3 is listed with a 9 kg washing capacity and a 6 kg drying capacity.
  • The 6 kg figure is the drying limit, not the 9 kg washing capacity.

Miele

Miele offers heat-pump appliances with capacities from 7 to 9 kg and installation options suited to different space constraints.

  • According to the brand, condensed water can be collected in a tank or drained away through a drain, depending on the installation.
  • The available space, any stacking arrangement and the connection must be confirmed in the manual for the model you choose.

Frequently asked questions

Does a condenser tumble dryer need to be connected to an external vent ?

No : condenser tumble dryers, with or without a heat pump, can be installed without a connection to the outside, unlike vented models. However, follow the manual for guidance on positioning, clearances, electrical supply and condensed-water management.

Do you need to empty the water tank after every cycle ?

It depends on the model and installation. Condensed water can be collected in a tank or directed to a drain ; check whether a hose is supplied, compatible or requires a separate connection.

Why can’t a 9/6 kg washer-dryer dry a 9 kg load of washing ?

The first figure indicates the maximum washing capacity and the second indicates the maximum drying capacity. With a 9/6 kg appliance, a 9 kg wash load must be reduced or dried in several batches to stay within the 6 kg limit.

How can you compare the noise and energy use of two tumble dryers ?

Use the current energy label to compare consumption per 100 Eco cycles, the Eco programme duration, the maximum Eco capacity and the noise indication. GIFAM and the European Commission state that the A to G scale has applied since 1 July 2025 : do not compare it directly with the old A+, A++ or A+++ classes.

What should you do if your home remains damp even when using a tumble dryer ?

Check the ventilation in your home and the appliance’s installation requirements. ADEME recommends, when laundry is dried indoors in the open air, using a large, well-ventilated room or one fitted with mechanical ventilation extraction ; this guidance remains useful when planning drying arrangements throughout the home.
